Mine is a white bread bap, butter, salt, vinegar, chips and ketchup. All sorts of rubbish being spouted in my office earlier about salad cream, beans, toasted brioche! How do you do it?

Yanbu- your way is the way
Yabu- there's another way ( enlighten me )

Warburton's, Lurpak salted, ketchup and chips from the fish & chip shop.

Simple and effing delicious!

Just4thisthreadtoday · 03/09/2024 01:03

One slice of well buttered white bread (in left hand)
layer of chips (not too many)
(salted at chip van sometimes vinegar too
Heinz ketchup

butter dripping

drink

repeat.

prefer just a slice of bread as I find baps/cobs/rolls etc too filling & one slice of bread folded over, not two together, easier to eat, fewer chips escape.

might have to be the chip van Thursday night!!

For some reason to best chip butty I can ever remember eating was when I was down to my last five euros in Paris. I had a bus journey home and was starving. I bought a baguette from a bakery, it was warm and fresh and then some McDonald's fries. They were fresh, and hot and crisp! Omg..I shoved them in the baguette and for some reason I was in absolute heaven?! The crispness and heat, the soft bread with a crunchy outside...mmmm...
Maybe I was just bloody starving.
I don't usually like McDonald's fries and would never put them in a baguette in the UK.
I guess I'm not really a chip butty aficionado?!

2 slices white bread

Smear of marg on both

Chips in middle

Squish together

Ketchup to dip

Nat6999 · 03/09/2024 03:18

Breadcake, butter, chips, salt & vinegar.

Nat6999 · 03/09/2024 03:21

Best thing is chips from chippy, quick blast in airfryer to warm them up to hot, breadcake buttered & waiting, tip chips on breadcake, add salt & vinegar top of breadcake on & enjoy the butter running up your arms.

Similar to some in the office, bread or bap, butter, chips, then ketchup and salt @DebateWithMoi

MassiveOvaryaction · 03/09/2024 08:04

Sliced white bread, butter, chippy chips with a splash of vinegar and lots of salt.

Ketchup does not belong in a chip butty.

Zingy123 · 03/09/2024 08:07

A buttered batch, salt, vinegar and red sauce.

OldTinHat · 03/09/2024 08:23

Thick sliced white bread, lots of butter, a ton of chips. Job done!

Couldn't agree more, although I like a bit of ketchup thinly spread on doorstep thick bread!

Never had one, no intention of trying one ever!

I loathe vinegar and salad cream.

Why would anyone think to put chips(carbs) in a roll/cob/ butty (carbs) and think it was good?

Just no!

Because it tastes good ?
I would ,nt bother eith sauces but add gravy instead.

Never had one in a bap or any sort of bread roll. Always 2 slices of bread, buttered, lots of salt. That's all. No off piste novelty crap.

One hundred percent this. The only concession to fanciness is that the bread should ideally be freshly baked white bread, cut in doorsteps. You serve each family member a plate of proper chips and a couple of buttered slices of bread on the side for them to make their own.

God, I miss my nan right now 😍

Babyworriesreal · 03/09/2024 09:42

I prefer a grainy type of bread or bun, lots of butter, salt, vinegar, and brown sauce. Occasionally cheese as well.

Another vote for baguette. The chips are long so the bread should be too. Add a few pickled onions and hot sauce for good measure. Cuts through the stodge!

Snowpaw · 03/09/2024 15:33

I’ll be honest, the Greeks do it best for me. Chips stuffed in a lamb gyros with a load of salad and sauce. Can’t get on board with the UK chip bap. Not enough flavour.

ScottBakula · 03/09/2024 15:49

@Snowpaw , ah that brings back happy memories of me and dh in Rhodes over 18 years ago, I think we lived on chicken gyros for 2 weeks . We tried all the local food trucks and cafes , the one that had different flavoued mayo was our favourite,

Black pepper , lime , lemon , chilli , yoghurt and firey hot spicy they were all good .

Even now I always have a bottle of spicy mayo ( ⅔ mayo ⅓ hot sauce) and a jar of mayo with about 2 table spoons of black pepper stired in it

Isseywith3witchycats · 03/09/2024 15:54

thick Warburtons toast style white bread loads of butter more salt than i would normally eat and ketchup perfect

FussyPud · 03/09/2024 16:40

Classic: white bread, butter, chips drenched in salt and vinegar. One slice at a time though, as the fold is somehow important to the flavour.

Not classic: as above but without vinegar, with a pot of leftover gravy to dunk it in.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 03/09/2024 16:59

The chip butty is one of the few meals that should never be bastardised, gentrified, or generally messed about with!!

A cheap white bun, lashings of proper butter (gone all famous five there), salt vinegar and chippy chips are everything that is needed. Your way is the right way OP.

Baguette!!! Be gone from this chat thread foul demon 😁

TheGoogleMum · 03/09/2024 17:01

Bread and butter with chip shop chips (already salted and vinegared)

Maybe curry sauce. Anything else is incorrect
