Mine is a white bread bap, butter, salt, vinegar, chips and ketchup. All sorts of rubbish being spouted in my office earlier about salad cream, beans, toasted brioche! How do you do it?

Yanbu- your way is the way
Yabu- there's another way ( enlighten me )

White sliced plastic bread (I prefer Warburton’s blue), salted butter, chips, ketchup for dipping. I make fish finger sandwiches the same way.

ilovepixie · 02/09/2024 22:34

Sliced white bread. Hovis if possible. Proper butter and salt and vinegar on the chips.

Noseybookworm · 02/09/2024 22:41

White sliced bread, butter, chips, salt. Perfect!

Wigtopia · 02/09/2024 22:43

almost same as OP, but minus ketchup, and replacing the bap for slices of crusty home made bread

It’s a barm in Liverpool but hey ho!

mine is white sliced bread, proper butter. Loads of salt and vinegar. Nothing more, nothing less.

This.

no to ketchup. It’s the devil’s condiment.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 02/09/2024 22:49

Soft white bread cake - a massive one if possible, like a scuffler - with a thick layer of butter on. Chips in, salt on, press the halves of the butty together and there you go. Vinegar etc only makes the chips soggy and horrible so you don't need them.

Dartmoorcheffy · 02/09/2024 22:50

Oh this is making me want a proper chip butty right now.

It's gotta be proper freshly cooked in a fryer chips, none of your mccains or other frozen crap. Warburtons toasties, proper butter, decent sea salt, and vinegar. And maybe an egg on the side or a pot of gravy to dip.

I'm from the north West, chip butties and barms were a staple part of my diet as a teen.

Close runner up is a mash and white cabbage butty. No vinegar but lots of butter and white pepper.

GigiAnnna · 02/09/2024 22:52

If it's from the chippy, it's a buttered barm with chips. If I make it at home it's just 2 slices of buttered bread, with or without tomato ketchup.

EveryDayisFriday · 02/09/2024 22:53

A chippy I used to work in added salad to a buttered barm loaded on top with salt and vingared chippy chips. Sounds wrong but it was pretty delicious. Felt "healthy" even though it obviously wasn't.

Forestcantrun · 02/09/2024 22:55

White bread. I like two individual slices to fold.
A layer of real Irish salted butter. None of that crap from a tub.
Liberal helping of fat chips, already salted and vinegared, fold slice and serve with a roasting hot cup of tea.
bonus points if the butter melts and runs down your hand.

Same as how I like a fish finger sandwich except I substitute the chips with fishfingers🤣🤣

Summertimer · 02/09/2024 22:56

Not something I ever make unless at a chip shop cafe that offers bread a butter/ buttered bap. I tend to just stuff a few chips in the bread and do a fold over. A modicum of vinegar or lemon might be involved

ExitPursuedByABare · 02/09/2024 22:57

White Warbies
Salted butter
Chips
Salt
Vinegar

Justleaveitblankthen · 02/09/2024 23:00

Barm cakes here in Lancashire 😋
No matter: sliced bread, butter... and HP sauce 😶‍🌫️

Hollowvoice · 02/09/2024 23:09

White bread, well buttered
Chips, well salted and vinegared (or drizzled with ketchup if no suitable vinegar)
Key thing is to build it a few minutes before eating so the butter starts to melt...

Jaxhog · 02/09/2024 23:28

That is the classic way, although I prefer wholemeal bread slices and mayo, rather ketchup.

hulahooper2 · 02/09/2024 23:56

white bread or roll , butter , chips , salt & vinegar

White bread of some sort and loads of butter, salt on the chips.

Couple be a bap, could be slices, just as long as it's basic white bread.

It's acceptable to make them out of whatever you have lying about as long as chips and butter are involved

soundsys · 03/09/2024 00:07

Same as you only it's a chip barm 😁

spikeandbuffy24 · 03/09/2024 00:07

Go to the chip shop and ask for one with scraps
So buttered barm, chips with salt and vinegar, scraps and mayo

Wingingitbestican · 03/09/2024 00:42

Hovis white bread, no butter! Thinly spread mushy peas on bread and add lots of chips and salt - amazing!! 😀

JMSA · 03/09/2024 00:43

I love chips and I love bread. But I just don't enjoy them together. Same with a crisp sandwich.
Sorry!

SnowFrogJelly · 03/09/2024 00:45

No bread.. fried egg with the chips instead

jazzybelle · 03/09/2024 00:57

The freshest white bread, soft butter, salt, vinegar and chip shop chips.

TheOpalReader · 03/09/2024 00:59

Breadcake, chips, maybe scraps if I'm feeling them, salt and enough vinegar to soak in to the bottom bread. No sauce at all on the butty, but it's acceptable to have something on the side to dunk it in.
