Cannot understand this mentality

So few weeks ago DH mowed through lawnmower cable, no one was electrocuted but lots of swearing and tantrum whilst I calmly looked on you tube found a video how to replace cable and ordered one from Amazon, came next day. Next day DH sat for 45 mins mending the old cable with electrical tape WITH THE NEW CABLE NEXT TO HIM. I offered to help rewire the new one or share the video, no, look I've got it working. Last week he went to mow lawn, stopped working, que another strop, even though I'd really asked him to be safe about this. Today, I'm out gardening in front, come in to get a coffee and he's sat watching the cricket RETAPING THE CABLE. He's asked me to be supportive of him doing it his way. please let me understand the mentality

I can't he is a muppet

SauvignonBlonk · 31/08/2024 12:39

A phrase I find myself saying repeatedly at the moment is ‘you can’t argue with an idiot’.
Leave him to it OP. Put the kettle on.

Caffeineneedednow · 31/08/2024 12:43

Stupid and dangerous.

Quitelikeacatslife · 31/08/2024 12:43

I'm sat having a coffee, he's mowing now, pleased with him self. Muppet indeed.

He wants you to be supportive of him doing it that way, well he's lost me, why does he need to do this? Is this male pride, he made a mistake and now he must fix it?

StormingNorman · 31/08/2024 12:45

I can’t help you understand but I do feel this in my very sole. Solidarity here!

Overtheatlantic · 31/08/2024 12:46

Awww bless him.

longdistanceclaraclara · 31/08/2024 12:46

Muppet. Dont say or have anything to do with it. I appear to have a husband who will try to fix everything himself. Ends up paying more to pay someone to fix his fuck ups. I ignore ignore ignore as long as he pays for it.

Perhaps, it is that , I wouldn't mind it's the only thing g he does do in the garden. Oh and the cable is lying across the grass he's just about to cut instead of on the side he's done, shall I google what to do in the event of electrocution? Geez

Send the new cable back and treat yourself to a bar of chocolate to enjoy when he goes for round 3.

You married a bit of a nob OP, is this the first time you've noticed?

It's been 23 years , sometimes I just try to get into the mentality. I'm going to stop that now , it's futile

Que another Paddy. Your husband sounds incredibly dim but can we cool it on the slurs

Cupcakey · 31/08/2024 12:54

Sounds like he's a pigheaded knobber.
Say to him... do you feel you cannot repair it with the wire I bought? Because if you're not capable I will pay someone to do it... he'll do it in minutes at the thought of paying someone and his capability being questioned 😆😆

JMSA · 31/08/2024 12:55

Missing the point entirely, but I'd kill to have someone to mow my lawn.
But yeah, he's a fool!

Never try to to twist yourself to understand stupidity. Because that is all it is. And quite frankly it's horrifying to realise we have married, and possibly procreated, with stupid men so our brains subconsciously try to protect us by going through hoops in trying to understand. Surely we aren't that stupid ourselves?? 🤔

((Speaking as someone who has only just realised their own stupidity in marrying a stupid, illogical, immature OH, so #solidarity)).

Make sure the life insurance etc is all sorted before he finally electrocutes himself.

Getitwright · 31/08/2024 13:05

Is the new cable an extension cable, one that the device attached plug goes into, then this goes to mains? Or is it a new cable that is wired into device (would be strange if it was to be honest). I grew up learning about things like how to rewire a plug, and re connect a cut wire, but you do have to know how to do it safely.
Nowadays most appliances come with a plug you cannot replace, so it’s rare to re plug something.

If it’s an extension cable, I would discreetly dispose of the old damaged extension, and leave your new purchase “handy”. I would also suggest that a circuit breaker plug might be a safer idea than anything for him if he’s still being stupid about not being careful around cables. Any arguments, simply tell him to make a Will so that him killing himself doesn’t leave you (and any children) in the lurch. And would he like “refused to climb off the man pedestal” on his tombstone.😉

user4664902343 · 31/08/2024 13:06

Well, I suppose when he electrocutes himself you can at least console yourself that he died happy. Possibly with a Darwin Award.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 31/08/2024 13:06

Is he using an RCD?

samarrange · 31/08/2024 13:07

Fortunately he is unlikely to electrocute himself, due to the miracle of modern earth-leakage circuit breakers. However, there might well be a loud bang, which will hopefully be more satisfying and less tragic. Win-win!

SauviGone · 31/08/2024 13:09

This is likely to be natural selection at work.

Make sure you’re named on his pension, life insurance, etc, and let him crack on.

Fetchthevet · 31/08/2024 13:10

Oh well, you did try. Just leave him to electrocute himself then get on with your life 🤷

HelpMeGetThrough · 31/08/2024 13:11

All he needs to do is get a terminal connector, strip the ends back, wire up and cover with insulation tape. Job done.

Had this last week, fixed in 10 minutes.
