Cannot understand this mentality

Quitelikeacatslife · 31/08/2024 12:37

So few weeks ago DH mowed through lawnmower cable, no one was electrocuted but lots of swearing and tantrum whilst I calmly looked on you tube found a video how to replace cable and ordered one from Amazon, came next day. Next day DH sat for 45 mins mending the old cable with electrical tape WITH THE NEW CABLE NEXT TO HIM. I offered to help rewire the new one or share the video, no, look I've got it working. Last week he went to mow lawn, stopped working, que another strop, even though I'd really asked him to be safe about this. Today, I'm out gardening in front, come in to get a coffee and he's sat watching the cricket RETAPING THE CABLE. He's asked me to be supportive of him doing it his way. please let me understand the mentality

Buy him a circuit breaker for Christmas.

Lawn mower or husband

FictionalCharacter · 31/08/2024 13:13

The mentality is "pig headed man who thinks he knows best" but what he's done is extremely dangerous. You don't mend mains cables with tape.
Is there a manly man around that he might listen to, who could tell him how fucking stupid he is to risk fatally electrocuting himself just because he wanted to prove some ridiculous point?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 31/08/2024 13:14

It is plugged into a breaker, isn't it?

I would very strongly suggest that you

  1. go to the fuse box/consumer unit and quietly flip the switch for the ring main. That will take out the mowing and the fucking cricket.
  2. Then take a pair of scissors and
  3. Chop the cable off as close to the mower as possible so he can't do it again.

Once he's fucked off somewhere else in a huff, you can replace the cable safely.

He's clearly doing it because he doesn't understand the instructions, but rather than admit it, he's doing exactly what morons do.

BarbaraHoward · 31/08/2024 13:17

Your husband is an idiot.

Paddy is not an acceptable phrase to use for a tantrum, which presumably you're not aware of. If you report your post to MN they'll probably edit rather than delete.

Make sure the life insurance etc is all sorted before he finally electrocutes himself.

What they said ⬆️ 😂

Tutorpuzzle · 31/08/2024 13:19

I wouldn’t normally suggest this (weaponised incompetence and all that) but try to make sure there is some sort of circuit breaker/rcd in use.

Unless you’re set to inherit millions…in which case leave the bugger to it!

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 31/08/2024 13:24

@Quitelikeacatslife I just bought a junction when I mowed my cable!! repair still working long after the mower itself had total expired! £5.97 for 2!

CranfordScones · 31/08/2024 13:25

Rub it in a bit by sending him a lawnmowing how-to video. You start mowing nearest the power outlet, moving away from it. Then you don't need to cross the power cable. The mentality seems to be an automatic assumption of knowledge - anything else seems to be sign of weakness to the male psyche.

Spondoolies · 31/08/2024 13:30

Replace it when he is not there and put tape round the new one

DadJoke · 31/08/2024 13:35

Bless his heart! The level of stubbornness which would risk electrocution for no reason whatsoever gets my begrudging admiration.

Lawn mower or husband

Yes

ClockworkDisaster · 31/08/2024 13:39

Never argue with an idiot. They bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Hatty65 · 31/08/2024 13:41

I'd be googling cruises and getting ready to spend his life insurance.

He's a pillock. Agree with pp who suggested he may well be up for a Darwin award.

wombat1a · 31/08/2024 14:14

RCD is essential with both new and old cables. If he fixed it using a terminal connector then its fine. If he just twisted the wires together then its not fine.

Quitelikeacatslife · 31/08/2024 14:20

Sorry, was out wrestling with a rose bush. It's not wired properly just twisted together and lots of electrical tape. You lot are wise, he is not. I'm going to have to pick my battle, or rather choose not to for the sake of my sanity I think . The replacement cable would need hard wiring in but it looks simple enough to do.
Life insurance is up to date (eek)

Oh dear I do hope that is a windup! @Quitelikeacatslife

Lincslady53 · 31/08/2024 15:19

Leave him to it while you sign up to a new insurance policy for him.

YearsWentByFast · 31/08/2024 16:06

I'd just ignore him when he's mending it or moaning it's broken again. Then I would either rewire it myself or probably just buy a new lawnmower.

Daleksatemyshed · 31/08/2024 18:33

@Quitelikeacatslife this Christmas buy him a lovely new lawn mower, a cordless one, one where no muppet can cack it up. All he has to do is remember to charge the battery the day before he wants to use it and then he's good to go.
Either this or make sure his life insurance is up to date and in your name

Commonsense22 · 31/08/2024 18:38

I feel you OP, my DH sometimes does similar things
