Why do so many people seem ‘triggered’ by Oasis?

For want of a better word.

If I saw a band I didn’t like were reforming, it wouldn’t stay in my head longer than a split second, it would be absolutely nothing to me.

Yet we’ve had multiple threads from posters demanding to know why anyone is buying tickets, why don’t people agree that they’re shit, how superior their own music taste is and what a better person they are for it (😂). I would never demand to know why somebody likes something I don’t, it just seems so arrogant and the answer so obvious.

If the band are aiming to be a bit ‘marmite’ they’ve clearly got the result they wanted!

No idea but it's quite hilarious.

I can't stand Girls Aloud, but it doesn't bother me that hey reformed. Don't get the fuss over Taylor Swift either, but she doesn't incite vitriol in me. It's very strange.

1questionfromme · 31/08/2024 11:33

I'm not sure it's being triggered as such but maybe more because there's such a ridiculous month of press and hype about them and it's all over the media.

There’s been more for Taylor Swift. I don’t like her music but appreciate many do, she’s very popular and therefore it’s big news.

Because of the Internet.

People are angry at the world, bored and frustrated at the world we live in today.

The media hypes everything up into a frenzy. The cost of things are ridiculous.

There's a way to voice your opinion on everything to the world.

It's not about Oasis. It's about people's mental health and frustration.

Everything is marketed this way now and people are becoming sick of it.

paradisecircus · 31/08/2024 11:36

I think it's normal to be interested in something which is generating a lot of hype. I quite like Oasis, not enough to bother getting a ticket, but I find the whole furore around them quite interesting. Also quite normal I suppose to clash with other people about music taste if that's the sort of thing that's important to you.

ClippyMuldoon · 31/08/2024 11:36

It's the media hype and the insistence they were THE band of the 90s. That needs to stop. The band themselves I don't care about either way.

chipsandpeas · 31/08/2024 11:37

imo theres an element of snobbery that people feel they are better than those who are trying to get Oasis tickts

comedycentral · 31/08/2024 11:38

Some people don't have a whole lot else going on I guess. They've got to get their drama somewhere.

Edingril · 31/08/2024 11:38

Taylor Swift?

Solonga · 31/08/2024 11:38

Probably because it's headlines in the media, it's being rammed down peoples throats, it's not the groups fault though it's just the way the media is here.

Yeah but they’ve gone at TS fans. All the news about not allowing friendship bracelets like at TS suggesting oasis is too cool for their fans to be nice to each other. I think it’s the arrogance that winds me up. But then I’m a Blur fan and have seen both Blur and Oasis live at Glastonbury. Following that, I genuinely don’t know why anyone would pay for oasis tickets. Their performance was as energised as if they’d just put the madam Tussaud’s statues on stage and shoved on the cd.

Only chipping in because you asked. I don’t really care if people want to go but don’t assume I’m jealous. With TS I totally understood not everyone wanted to see her. I know some fans didn’t get that.

Prawncow · 31/08/2024 11:40

I wonder if it’s tv news. I never watch the news but if you watch it everyday then then it must feel a bit like being force fed Oasis hype (or Taylor Swift, or the Olympics or whatever is dominating the news cycle.)

daliesque · 31/08/2024 11:40

I think a lot of the bitching - at least on here - is more to do with the fact that in the early days oasis were seen as the working class band and blur the nice middle class one.
Think there was probably something similar in the 60's between the Beatles and Rolling Stones.
So of course all the insecure middle class wannabes on here are falling over themselves to emphasise just how much they hate oasis, the Gallagher brothers etc.
I'm working class stock, my partner is solidly upper middle class and we both love oasis and blur 😁

samarrange · 31/08/2024 11:41

We could also have a thread about why we get so many threads in which people ask why we get so many threads on X or Y topic.

Let's face it, if we're sitting typing at the Internet it's because we enjoy arguing with other people in a relatively safe environment. It's a bit like when you go into the pub and see the same face and think "Blimey, they must all be alcoholics to be here so regularly". 😉

daliesque · 31/08/2024 11:42

I also think that a lot of people are wanting to go to the concerts just to see if Liam and Noel have a punch up on stage 🤣

pourmeawine · 31/08/2024 11:43

You could totally repost this message saying “why do so many people seem triggered by Taylor Swift”. There were many many messages from people not understanding the “hype” about her earlier this year. I don’t know why people do it. We all like different things. A person isn’t good or bad if they like or don’t like a certain celebrity. I just don’t get why people have to go out of their way to declare that they don’t like someone or aren’t interested. Just move on and do something else.

Solonga · 31/08/2024 11:44

I don't think I would be getting one of the later dates if I wanted to go

IntrepidCat · 31/08/2024 11:45

I must have missed this.

I feel quite mixed about Oasis. I’m not a fan but their music was at its peak when I was at uni so it feels very nostalgic.

fundbund · 31/08/2024 11:46

Because people hate working class people

WhatNoRaisins · 31/08/2024 11:46

I think some people are just miserable fun suckers who hate seeing enthusiasm in other people.

Catlord · 31/08/2024 11:46

I think it's because they aim to be marmite and have spent the interim period expressing strong opinions about anyone and everyone, including each other. Liam and Noel Gallagher have never asked people to enjoy their music if they wish, but keep things friendly if not. I know they don't mean any harm but it's their schtick, and will be wished for or expected publicity.

A big part of their cultural legacy, has been the polemic between them and Blur (most actually quite liked both). It's just who they are and part of that time.

Very different hype to Taylor Swift. Although I think there was a fair bit of commentary on how oversold she was too at the time of her tour. I think it's the nature of such a huge one artist event.

wombat15 · 31/08/2024 11:46

There is a ridiculous amount of hype about it and some people are wondering why. I get that there was a fuss about Taylor Swift too but she is much more popular than Oasis ever was and is plus she likes performing and is not doing it just to make money. In contrast Oasis are doing it entirely to make a fortune and are a couple of knobs who hate each other.

fundbund · 31/08/2024 11:47

Horrible, humourless, miserable, virtue signalling article which typifies the Guardian's snobbery towards the working class

invisiblecat · 31/08/2024 11:48

I didn't particularly like their music back in the day, and liked Liam Gallagher even less.

Whilst I would sooner climb Ben Nevis in bare feet than go to watch Oasis in concert, I know that other people like the band, so great - they can crack on and buy tickets. Fine by me.
