Since he ran 30 marathons in 30 days in the Jordanian desert for charity?
He's all over the shop today on telly and radio talking about his experience and he just seems really genuine and humble. Not at all Made in Chelsea anymore.
Or do I need to give my head a wobble?

I've got a really clear memory of him on Made in Chelsea telling a tearful Louise that he cheated on her repeatedly because she allowed him to. I don't think he's got a humble bone in his body but it's great that he's raised so much money for charity.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 30/08/2024 19:52

He wouldn't have done it unless there was loads of publicity in it for him

These new social media ultrarunners are all in it for the money/fame

They never pick an established challenge where it's difficult to break the record

They pick something no one has ever done so they're automatically the first

And they spend ££££ on support and logistics so all they have to do is run. They don't have to think about nutrition, or carry anything, or wonder where they will sleep, they've got people all around them to wipe their arse and feed them on schedule.

</rant>

This is a bit of a bugbear of mine

longdistanceclaraclara · 30/08/2024 19:53

Im on the fence. He is immensely privileged but also had some very difficult times. He does seem to have turned things around.

I'm glad all the money raised is going direct to the charity rather than funding his team / training etc.

FatmanandKnobbin · 30/08/2024 19:54

Even absolute arseholes can do nice things sometimes.

He falls into that category for me.

People change over the years.

I enjoyed his documentary about trying to find his brother too.

I take MIC with a large pinch of salt. He was clearly playing a character, some of which was probably him, some of it maybe not so much. Sometimes it was like he could barely keep a straight face with what he was saying on that show.

comedycentral · 30/08/2024 19:58

I don't think we can judge TV personalities too much on those type of reality shoes as some of the storylines and incidents are made for TV and they film them over and over like a soap opera! (I mean made in Chelsea).

CheeryUser · 30/08/2024 19:58

You could never possibly be as in love with Spencer Mathews as Spencer Matthews.

Eyestothewind · 30/08/2024 20:00

He has done amazingly well running all those marathons, I did warm to him on the Everest documentary as well, he came across quite well if not quite the smartest tool. He was vile on MIC but hopefully he has grown up a bit and seems very much in love with Vogue.

Candlesandmatches · 30/08/2024 20:01

No, he has small children. He’s chosen to do this - potentially very dangerous thing, then it’s splashed all over social media.
Id have more respect if he just quietly got on with his life, looked after his children and didn’t put them on social media. It feels a bit exploitative.
Also the amount of hours away from family to train for a marathon - let alone multiple marathons is significant.

SophiaJ8 · 30/08/2024 20:03

They live by me - I was set to dislike him, but they are out and about all the time doing very normal things, and seem like a lovely little family

People can change, as PP said

Meh, it's a tough physical challenge, but he hasn't done it "for charity", but for the publicity. Seems it's worked though, so good luck to him.

Parkmybentley · 30/08/2024 20:06

Rich people larping again. Really couldn't give less of a shit what rich people do. They should pack it in, the being rich I mean, work their way back up from nothing. Then I might be interested in what they get up to

Grungousto · 30/08/2024 20:06

I mean what else has he got on? Fair play but he’s a rich guy who doesn’t have to worry about money.

rannia · 30/08/2024 20:09

I agree he's done it for the publicity.

StationManager · 30/08/2024 20:12

A mixed bag of views then.

I shall continue to admire his lean musculature when it pops up on my newsfeed but I shan't add him to my laminate list just yet.

I'm with you OP - i wasn't a fan of him on made in Chelsea but I think he comes across really well now.

Ive meet him and he was really lovely and seemed genuine.

Yes, if you have to be a bit silly to believe those kind of shows aren't fully scripted. All you need to do is a little research and you find plenty of evidence of it.

He comes from a privileged background but seems to have gone through lots of stuff and money doesn't exactly buy happiness.

I've watched a show called "Pilgrimage" on the IPlayer with him a while ago where people of different faiths did a pilgrimage to a holy site in Wales (I think) and he was very empathetic, listened to other people and was genuinely interested in learning more about everything that was different from what he knew. As far reality TV people go there are far worse than him.

coffeeplease16 · 30/08/2024 20:27

It’s a well known secret he’s cheated on Vogue multiple times

Sleepygrumpyandnothappy · 30/08/2024 20:31

Pah. If I didn’t have to work and look after a toddler I would be running 30 marathons in 30 days.

rannia · 30/08/2024 20:34

Really? @coffeeplease16 I haven't heard that.
I have heard he doesn't plug the alcohol free business as much, due to his own drinking, but I don’t know how accurate that is.

Someone mentioned his treatment of Louise. I also remember when he was going out with Lucy (Lucie?) one example of when he'd cheated on her, as she later discovered. They were in France if I recall correctly, and Lucy had said how pretty their waitress was, so apparently he made sure to get her phone number.

Not my taste, OP! I think it's the unpleasant behaviour and bulging eyes.

Maybe someone needs to break it to you that it was a tv show…

Big wobble

This feels like a marketing ploy.
