To think that high heels are just not worth it

I've come back from a girls night out and feet are hurting like feck. Don't get me wrong, I have my fair share of heels but omg why do I honestly wear them?

I’m just trying to think of somewhere where they would still be worn… a wedding?

Are you thinking of stilettos or just high heels? I rarely see stilettos but I do see people wearing blocky highs heels and platforms. I do myself. I was out with my late teens niece at the weekend and she was wearing four inch block heels.

blahblahblah24 · 27/08/2024 08:35

I'm 5 foot 1 and don't want to make myself taller with silly heels. I didn't get a job as a PA about 10 years ago. They asked me how I would feel standing around at award ceremonies in heels all night 😝 I wore flats to every job interview. Glad I didn't get the job as they were pretty shallow.

It wasn't until.I started reading MN that I realised just how much women hate and judge other women for the choices they make.

Agreed- the language on this thread is so depressing: silly/tacky/ridiculous/dated/ desperate.

I wear my heels for work- I have lots of pairs, love them, and get loads of compliments on them. I can walk perfectly in them, I don't totter, stagger or stumble around as many posters on here seem to think heel wearers do.

And I couldn't give a fig whether other women prefer a pair of flats. Why the vitriol about something that doesn't impact on anyone else?

Same here, but in any heels thread there will always be the inevitable tottering, painful feet, old fashioned, never see anybody wearing them these days comments.

KateDelRick · 27/08/2024 08:57

What do you like about them, @Artesia?

Again, a women is asking another women to justify her choices. Men don't do this.

Why are you doing this?

mushroomforest · 27/08/2024 09:02

I think heels look nice objectively, but I never wear them nor understand how other women can wear them for any length of time. It seems like it would be painful, but I am very precious about my foot comfort (and comfort in general…I live in shorts/jeans T-shirts/hoodies), so I guess I’m way off the mark for heels 🫣

Edingril · 27/08/2024 09:03

I presume the discussion is around heels is because of story around them it is not the same as a 'fashion' hairstyle or wearing flares or other random things people choose to wear

If people want to wear a yellow hat I don't know many that would say they wear it to be empowered or it gives me confidence or patriarchy or whatever, heels do have a background it is not just some random item

Also what is the male equivalent of heels? Apart from hiding baldness I can't think of anything

According to society women are conditioned to wear them

stopthepigeonstopthepigeon · 27/08/2024 09:06

Never worn them, too uncomfortable (if not downright painful). They seem to be out of fashion at the moment anyway.

Smallsalt · 27/08/2024 09:07

Platform wedges, best of both worlds!
I live in mine, so comfy. I actually put them on I preference to my trainers.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/08/2024 09:07

I hate them and so do my feet.

LlynTegid · 27/08/2024 09:08

Other than as part of a modelling job or theatrical performance, no one should ever be forced to wear one.

I wish tv presenters did not wear them, and think it should be unlawful for it to be required in any workplace (there was a company who wanted it for receptionists a few years back).

I stopped wearing them out in my teens. I wear them occasionally for modelling shoots and will very occasionally wear a pair of kitten heels or wedges for a special occasion. They were designed by men, for the male gaze, to increase our sex appeal whilst limiting our comfort and mobility.

Well no, high heels were originally designed by men for men as military boots as a nice high heel was needed to stay stable on your war horse. The heels grip the stirrups.

Then, because women like a man in uniform, all the fashionable lads who were not in any way military but wanted to look tough like a Calvary officer or if lower class like a highway man- well they all started wearing high heel boots and strutting their stuff to get the admiration of the ladies.

Then high heels that were not boots became fashionable amongst male courtiers for Louis the Sun King. Then women started wanting high heel shoes too…especially after the cross dressing fad of the 1690s…meant they had a chance to see how awesome it makes their calves look too.

Blimey. It was a genuine question about a fashion choice! I'm interested!
Never mind.

I think heels look really elegant and are very flattering for your legs. I've spent most of my life wearing heels of varying heights but sadly have had to stop wearing high heels since I slipped a disc three years ago and can now only mange kitten heels. I have never dressed to please anyone but myself, and i don't give a toss what is in fashion or not - I know what suits me and I like to feel good about myself when I look in the mirror. There will never be a day when I will wear a dress or skirt with trainers 😆

GingerPirate · 27/08/2024 09:14

No, of course not.
As aren't other things primarily created
for men to look at.
😁

Thank you - you think they look elegant and flattering on your legs. I just wanted to know why some women choose them. I'm sorry to hear about your slipped disc - literally, what a pain. I'm sure you've got some elegant kitten heels, though.

Fahran · 27/08/2024 09:27

According to society women are conditioned to wear them

And some of us really don’t care.

I like the way I look wearing heels. That is all I care about.

I also don’t care about the odd gaze from a male. It’s pretty obvious from MN that it’s not the male gaze I need to be worried about.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 27/08/2024 09:34

In the past, men wanted to keep high heels for themselves. Some countries actually banned women from wearing high heels for health & safety reasons because falling while wearing them could cause a miscarriage even before a woman could know she was pregnant. The men loved towering over women, made them feel very masculine.

mushroomforest · 27/08/2024 09:34

I really only think heels look bad when the wearer is clearly not used to wearing them, and is sort of teetering down the road. I see a lot of women out on a weekend night carrying the heels and walking barefoot along the grimey road 😩 (These tend to be the super high variety). In those cases the whole night-out fashion needs an overhaul though, because those types of club dresses go hand in hand with those super high heels it would seem. I could be wrong as I’m not exactly in this scene.

I thought they'd completely gone out of fashion.

They have. On the rare occasion you see them now they look very dated.

abracadabra1980 · 27/08/2024 10:02

Wore some lovely block heels for a wedding last weekend and felt really dated. Just wanted my trainers on 🤣

garlictwist · 27/08/2024 10:04

Never worn them. To be honest, you don't see them about much now outside of The Apprentice. I'm getting married this year and wearing white trainers. My feet can't handle anything else.

Beefcurtains79 · 27/08/2024 10:06

They are coming back in fashion now, quite a few people wearing them in Soho on Saturday night, this time last year there were none.
