To think that high heels are just not worth it

I've come back from a girls night out and feet are hurting like feck. Don't get me wrong, I have my fair share of heels but omg why do I honestly wear them?

I am 5ft 1 and have always felt the need to wear heels , I feel so much more confident with a bit of height and not having to look up at people . However, i have almost completely given up now, as I've got older I’m not as bothered. I have a couple of medium height pairs for fancier wear , although that's not often . I started wearing Docs a few years ago, wish I'd found them sooner !

I think high heels for work are definitely no longer fashionable and look extremely silly. I work in the city and raise eye brows when I see a professional woman tottering around in heels. But high heels for social outings aren’t out of fashion, there are definitely occasions when a strappy stiletto or chunkier heel is still called for (source: I have some very fashionable friends). I can only personally handle a really low or v chunky heel though.

TheEuropaHotel · 27/08/2024 08:19

My feet are problematic little buggers and there are many shoes I cannot wear without pain unfortunately! I'm nearly always in trainers and boots unless it's extremely hot and then I'll wear flat sandals.

I do think my feet were always a weird shape (high arches and bony 🤢), but wearing high heels as a young 'un did not help

TheEuropaHotel · 27/08/2024 08:20

I do see them out and about these days - they went away for a couple of years but then reared their ugly heads again. They aren't completely out of fashion anymore (around London at least which is where I live - it may be different in other places)

Sussurations · 27/08/2024 08:22

Agree that they are dated for work. I’m short with small wide feet and (sadly) stumpy legs and ankles, so I can’t wear stilettos, but I love a high, chunky-heeled platform for special occasions. Decent quality, well fitting ones are surprisingly comfortable and the platform absorbs the weight on the ball of the foot.

i look just as dreadful in smart flat shoes as stilettos and they fuck up my back. I think sometimes we don’t realise that flats can be ugly, uncomfortable and damaging to the feet and back too. Most of the time I’m in Birkenstocks, trainers or Solovair boots. I need the support and they are more flattering.

I like heels but only wear them very occasionally if I am going somewhere I will largely be sitting down interspersed with bits of standing up. I would not wear them when walking or dancing.

I haven't worn heels since I was a teenager and I'm sure that's why my feet are healthy. My sister wore heels for work for years and it messed her feet up.

Incidentally, they weren't invented for the male gaze although that's probably why women were later encouraged to wear them.

They were originally worn by male horseriders. I think it was the Persians. The heels helped to keep their boots in the stirrups.

When they spread to Europe, they were adopted by male aristocrats and royalty. You can see portraits of people like Louis XIV wearing high heels.

A low block heel, not a 4" stiletto! 😂

Topseyt123 · 27/08/2024 08:27

I can't remember the last time I wore any high heels. I prefer trainers or flats. Even flat sandals.

High heels of any sort are totally impractical and not worth the discomfort.

KateDelRick · 27/08/2024 08:27

I'm 65, and I never wear high heels of any kind. I tried briefly when I was younger, but I hate painful feet.
Men seem to love how they look, but who cares.

Thisbastardcomputer · 27/08/2024 08:27

I'm well past it now and have RA. But glad I wore them while I could, never had them off when young and it annoyed my mother who said I looked common, Sheffields own version of Hyacinth Bouquet.

KateDelRick · 27/08/2024 08:29

The royal women - in various locations - still seem wedded to them, for some reason.

MyStylish40s · 27/08/2024 08:29

I’m just trying to think of somewhere where they would still be worn… a wedding?

Ilovegoldies · 27/08/2024 08:29

I haven't worn them since my mid 20s. For a wedding I'd probably wear something like a gladiator style sandal. For my own wedding I wore white Adidas gazelles. Many brides are wearing white converse now. On such a special day why would you want painful feet?

Ljcrow · 27/08/2024 08:29

Nope. I do think they can look really good but they're just not worth the discomfort. On the rare occasions I've worn them I've ended up bare foot. Pointless!

Maybe they like them?

I stopped wearing them out in my teens. I wear them occasionally for modelling shoots and will very occasionally wear a pair of kitten heels or wedges for a special occasion. They were designed by men, for the male gaze, to increase our sex appeal whilst limiting our comfort and mobility.

I thought there were invented for and worn by men originally?

I only wear them now to weddings but the shape of my leg does look so nice in a heel.

KATHSTYLE · 27/08/2024 08:31

Never, ever wearing 'proper' high heels ever again.

I've got a couple of pairs of block heel sandals/ one pair of block heel black suede boots for getting 'dressed up' but the heels are max 1.5 inches.

The rest of the time I'm in flats or trainers.

You just answered my question Grin

The last wedding I was at was in 2019.

Izzymoon · 27/08/2024 08:31

I don’t wear heels for work but I would out to dinner, an event or a wedding. My feet never hurt at the end of the night or the next day though!

I can still remember the last time we had a major snow event seeing a woman tottering across the main street in high heels. Now that was really ridiculous (the snow had fallen overnight so would have been well and truly settled on the ground by the time she left to go to work). The uber fashionable marketing manager at my workplace wore gumboots (wellies) when she set foot out on the street.

On night I saw my neighbour walking up the street in the snow in stilettos and commented to my husband how insane she was. She broke her foot that night and chipped a bone. I was not surprised.

Butwhybecause · 27/08/2024 08:32

Why do I need to be 4 inches taller?

I love to be 4" taller but as I'm not going to wear stilettos or any heeled shoes I'll have to settle for 5' 4" ☹

KateDelRick · 27/08/2024 08:33

@Butwhybecause - I'm 5'2", and was always advised to wear heels. I haven't. I'm short and proud!

RamonaRamirez · 27/08/2024 08:33

They look very old fashioned to me now

no doubt they will be back in fashion again soon though 😁

ImAFemaleVersionOfRoyKeane · 27/08/2024 08:33

My 19 year old and her friends go clubbing regularly.

They all dress up and then wear trainers rather than high heels.

Not chunky trainers but something like Adidas Sambas!

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 27/08/2024 08:35

I wore them in 20s and 30s. Haven't really gone out in them a while now though. Don't see the point as I don't really get overly dressed up...which is what I would use them for. Wore a fabulous pair last November in blue for a wedding with a green dress. So comfy. Loved them but won't again until this year at my own wedding. Again...very comfortable for the day time and have flats for the evening. I have certainly had my fair share of very painful soles and blisters. And csn only think I thought it was a good idea at the time!
