To think that high heels are just not worth it

I've come back from a girls night out and feet are hurting like feck. Don't get me wrong, I have my fair share of heels but omg why do I honestly wear them?

Feet!

Scarletrogue · 27/08/2024 05:34

I would say they were worn to make you taller so you looked taller and thus slimmer for your height.

pinkfleece · 27/08/2024 05:34

Never worn them. Think those who do really rather pathetic TBH given the damage that they do to the feet and ankles, really don't see them as sexy.

Mercedes45 · 27/08/2024 05:36

High heels does not equal stiletto. To those who don't or never wore them, what do you wear with a lovely dress you are wearing to a wedding for example. Have a wedding in few days, I am wearing heels. They are by no means stilettos but def not kitten heels. But are high heels!

Pruneaux · 27/08/2024 05:39

I love them as I have short legs and have some gorgeous (very expensive and comfortable pairs). But I do feel I less fashionable in them now than pre Covid days, and never find myself reaching for the highest ones which I used to wear in the office.

Recent purchases have been 1-2 inches and flat form trainers.

k1233 · 27/08/2024 05:43

I absolutely adore beautiful shoes. Unfortunately the majority of flats are fugly, but I'm noticing that is changing in recent times. I've got a dodgy knee and tore my plantar fascia about 2 years ago (in flat shoes, on flat ground), so my heels are "retired". I need to donate them but they're so pretty.

Hateam · 27/08/2024 05:46

It wasn't until.I started reading MN that I realised just how much women hate and judge other women for the choices they make.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 27/08/2024 05:48

I haven’t worn them since university.

As for empowering, I know of 2 fairly recent occasions when friends on their way home from nights out got chased by men, & managed to run to safety. That would have been a lot harder in heels.

Josette77 · 27/08/2024 05:48

I love them!

It's kinda sad reading the comments about women who do on here.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 27/08/2024 05:55

I used to wear them for some occasions, often including work, but I no longer do as they become more uncomfortable as you get older.

Just normal plain flat shoes, I personally couldn't care less who wears them but never understood the idea thry are empowering, nor blame men because woman are 'forced' to wear them and can't see how they look good either in a shop or on

Nor get the idea of needing a second pair of shoes with you because you need to change out of them

But as long as I am not wearing them I don't care who does

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 27/08/2024 06:02

Pre-Covid a lot of women in London used to wear comfy shoes to commute & heels in the office, which at least was easier on their feet than being in heels all the time.

I don’t think heels should ever be a compulsory part of a uniform though, especially for jobs like flight attendant or hotel receptionist that involve a lot of standing & walking.

keepkamalacarryon · 27/08/2024 06:03

As a life long heel wearer I just bought my first fugly pair of fisherman's sandals and I'm not sure I'm going back. I think heels started to hurt me after lock down, I also moved to a cobblestone town where waking everywhere on heels doesn't work. When I put heels on they do look dated and spiky. I'm menopausal and achey so really appreciate being able to run around fast when I can without my footwear slowing me down.

I stopped wearing them out in my teens. I wear them occasionally for modelling shoots and will very occasionally wear a pair of kitten heels or wedges for a special occasion. They were designed by men, for the male gaze, to increase our sex appeal whilst limiting our comfort and mobility.

I know exactly what you mean. I only wear heels in front of the camera. Quentin said to me that Margot feels the same way.

And I can vouch for Naomi and Heidi too. When I treated them to smoothies in my trailer they both said that heels were only for shoots.

Patriarchy. No!

I wore low heeled shoes to my own wedding. I have been to very few weddings in the last decades but wore sandals to the last two I attended. I certainly never set foot in a high heel in my almost 50 years of working in an office either.

High heels look very dated now. Seeing women tottering around city centres struggling to walk in them looks increasingly ridiculous. Why bother?

I can still remember the last time we had a major snow event seeing a woman tottering across the main street in high heels. Now that was really ridiculous (the snow had fallen overnight so would have been well and truly settled on the ground by the time she left to go to work). The uber fashionable marketing manager at my workplace wore gumboots (wellies) when she set foot out on the street.

LaPalmaLlama · 27/08/2024 06:38

I wore them pretty much all the time from late teens to being about 30 I think- either heeled boots or shoes. I was always paranoid about my ( perfectly normal) thighs and liked the slimming/ leg lengthening effect.

Now I wear flats 99.9% of the time and I do wonder if heels are basically going to die out as it seems younger women ( teens to early twenties) barely wear them so even when I wear them I feel that they date me even though I still kind of like the aesthetic.

I think they are sexy, empowering and give me loads of confidence.

Empowering?? 🤣🤣🤣

I mean, I'm a Too Many Shoes woman who owns too many heels, though I hardly ever wear them these days. I guess they might 'give you confidence' if you're a shorty and have trouble projecting presence. But what the hell is empowering about balancing on the fronts of your feet with a couple of sticks under your heels?

Try stilts! So empowerfullish!

bergamotorange · 27/08/2024 06:45

Heels don't look good or feel good, so what is the point of them?

FindingMeno · 27/08/2024 06:48

I have feet like a hobbit so I'm made for birkenstocks not for heels.
I also feel like it's only the very rare woman who doesn't look ridiculous trying to walk in them.

Fiery30 · 27/08/2024 06:50

I have never really worn heels as I find them uncomfortable to walk loads or stand for long periods or even dance. However, I love shoes and have a fabulous collection of shoes and sandals that might have a slight height (not the absolute flat ones as those are not comfy either). I have always been complimented on them and therefore, never feel the need to wear high heels.

RampantIvy · 27/08/2024 06:53

Gooselady · 27/08/2024 01:49

I thought they'd completely gone out of fashion.

Try telling that to the ladies in Leeds.

I was out in Leeds on Saturday and saw loads of dressed up women of all ages in heels.

Smart trainers or pumps

Wore them in my twenties then went on to comfy shoes when I had my DC. Would never put a pair if them on again.

I agree that they are not empowering and men force, thats a load of nonsense. But plain flat shoes wouldn't look good with the beautiful dress I have for the wedding. It would actually ruin it. You can get comfortable heeled shoes. I've never had to change out of them because of pain.

I only wear them on occasion. I'm usually in birkenstocks, crocs or trainers but you have to wear the shoes that match the dress
