For hating the new bottle tops

What is going on?
Why were we not told that from now on we will never drink from a bottle without the half-cocked still-attached top spraying water/ milk/ juice all over our fronts?

But the previous bottle tops did not have this annoying feature.

Changing the design because some people are too lazy and stupid to recycle the tops just penalises the rest of us.

I think it was that most people, were not putting the lid back on the bottle before recycling.
I read up about how to recycle and was alarmed at just how precise it needs to be - no scraps of food, bottles attached to lids, no combined plastics, nothing too small.
I think there should be more awareness. Many of us think we're doing our bit, when in fact vast amounts of home recycled stuff still ends up in landfill.

I think they're fine on drinks. You just snap one side off and then they're easy to use. I hate them on yoghurt though. I have a chocolate protein smoothie every day and the stupid lid drips the chocolate liquid and that's very annoying.

greengreyblue · 25/08/2024 22:16

Me too! Can’t tighten back up, water loses fizz. Grrrrrr.

OlympicGoldfish · 25/08/2024 22:18

cardibach · 25/08/2024 21:35

Push them right back until they click. They don’t hit you 8n the face or spray you with anything then. Plus they stay attached so you don’t accidentally drop them and find yourself unable to resell the bottle.
And yes, the reasons for them are pretty obvious. The post criticised above wasn’t really snide.

This. You snap it back till it clicks. It stays attached but you can drink easily. Nowadays when I get the odd bottle with the old style detachable lids it feels very odd.

Did you miss the part where she said she is dyspraxic therefore these things aren’t as easy as you would like to make out

Thank you @Sirzy …can see from other comments that NT people also struggle!

It’s still easy to see if the lid isn’t on properly. Plus I’m responding to a post where she’s saying she now doesn’t think it’s the dyspraxia causing the problem.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 25/08/2024 22:22

I hate them because with the change, they are all much shallower and you have to apply greater force (and grip) on a far smaller area, which is utterly shit if you've got any form of arthritis affecting your hands or wrists. I wasn't impressed having a random 12 year old seeing me struggle and say 'I'll do that for you, Miss - my Dad and Nan can't do them either'.

Guess nobody's bothered about anyone disabled being able to access water or a sugary drink to treat a hypo.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 25/08/2024 22:23

Then try not to buy plastic bottles. But just press the lid back, it’s no problem.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 25/08/2024 22:24

bongsuhan · 25/08/2024 21:37

I wonder whether people also got so upset when canned beverages switched from pull-off tops to stay-on tops for the same reason...

Good point, but I do feel that the pull-ring things on cans are easier than these new attached bottle lids. They are tricky, and I find it hard to open, and also to drink out of, and to pop the lid back on. Hopefully they will improve them soon.

AdaColeman · 25/08/2024 22:28

I am finding them very irritating.

I would often refill the old style bottle several times, to use for water for overnight. But the new lids leak when you reuse them, so now I'm just using each bottle once. So I'm now using more plastic than I did previously!

Blackbutler86 · 25/08/2024 22:30

It’s actually made me stop buying bottled drinks so it’s done me a favour. I got a steel bottle instead and fill it with squash or water and sometimes I’ll buy cans.

Seren78 · 25/08/2024 22:31

Er hello.. environmental issues, plastic pollution, danger to wildlife, the list goes on & on, just like the plastic problem. Literal despair at these comments.😥

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 22:32

cardibach · 25/08/2024 22:10

Screw it open like you always have, then push the attached lid back until it clicks out of the way. It’s really not difficult.

It is I swear. The ones on the smoothies? Impossible.

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 22:35

It’s really not difficult.

It is I'm telling you I find it difficult. It's my lived in experience with my rubbishy hands but don't tell me it's not difficult when I'm telling you I can't open them.

Astrabees · 25/08/2024 22:37

I cut them off with a scalpel blade so they then look like a normal old style top. I was so pissed off by the imposition of these tethers on us that I put all of the bottles in the general waste bin for 6 weeks to teach the nanny state a lesson.

ttcat37 · 25/08/2024 22:37

violetsparkle · 25/08/2024 22:03

HOW DO YOU OPEN THE LID?

Just turn it like the old ones? They feel no different?

Cattery · 25/08/2024 22:38

Jarring. I just cut them off.

The innocent smoothie ones? I haven't tried any others yet

I haven’t tried one of those sorry- I meant the generic bottle of pop/ water like you get with a meal deal

Twicedaily · 25/08/2024 22:44

I’m baffled. There was even a programme on BBC about this hatred of the new bottle tops. What age are these people who struggle and hate them? They’re just new. Humans can adapt to them very quickly, they are simple and just need common sense. One step forward for recycling and the seas. Come on people you can do this!

cardibach · 25/08/2024 22:44

Innocent smoothies have always been a bit tricky I think. Some tops seem to be sealed shut a bit fiercely.

You can buy a refillable purpose made water bottle and use it over and over for months.

ClipTap · 25/08/2024 22:44

I love the new tops

Means the top won't accidentally drop on the floor

RayWinstone · 25/08/2024 22:45

I'm genuinely surprised by the hatred on here! I really like them... Not for environmental reasons really (although that's obviously a really good thing), but because I was always putting lids down and not being able to find them, knocking them into the floor and losing them etc. It's neater and easier. And as PPs have said, as long as you snap the lid right back and move it to the other side of the bottle, it doesn't interfere with drinking from the bottle at all.
