I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

Speaking as someone who has always struggled with literacy years ago at school you were out on the slow table no great support
it can be soul destroying for some smug self righteous twat pointing out your errors

for the life of me I can’t see the need
I think anyone who does this is no better than a bully

The problem is that it's rude to call it out, but if you don't they don't learn, which, to be fair, they should have done as kids. So we froth on in righteous wrath.

Regardless of whether it's rude, people simply don't learn to use language correctly by being criticised by a few random people on the internet (struggling against the huge tide of influence by the gazillions of incorrect examples also on the internet). Some people absord SPaG easily. Many do not, even if they were taught as kids.

It's hard enough to get these rules to stick in people's heads when you're actually in front of them and they're there to learn (as I have good cause to know!). All anyone achieves by correcting strangers is self-satisfaction and pissing people off. Most clearly only do it to look superior anyway, however much they may pretend it's some kind of public service!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/08/2024 07:09

The problem with grammar is it's a total mindfield.
Should of gifted them a dictionary.

I remember my mum drilling the fact that it is 'similar to' and 'different from' into my sister over the dinner table. So 'different to' also annoys me.

I am easily annoyed by this stuff, clearly!

I thought I was the only person left in the world who uses different from, and is irritated by different to. Also drilled into me by my mum.

But I think I have to accept that language has changed, and it's a losing battle.

Rest bite.

What do people even think that is?

A ‘bite’ of ‘rest’.

I used to see it a lot of a forum for carers of people with dementia, so pernickety pedant though I am, I could forgive the poor things who were so desperate for a ‘bite’ of rest.

TinyRebel · 24/08/2024 07:46

Phrases with ‘needs gone’ or ‘needs done’ etc 😉 really annoy me. How about ‘needs to go’ or ‘needs doing’ or ‘needs to be done’?

The use of lend and borrow as being interchangeable grinds my gears. You lend to someone and borrow from them, it's not hard. Preferably don't do either....

It makes some threads hard to grasp initially.

And 'would of'. Don't get me started.

I live in South Yorkshire (originally from London) and people quite often say things like “I borrowed them a dress” instead of lent. It took me ages to get my head around it, and to honest it still sets my teeth on edge 😅

See also “I won’t be ready while 5” (instead of “I won’t be ready until 5.”

LinzyB · 24/08/2024 07:55

I have seen disgusting written as discusting quite a lot lately.

1 Are you the AIBU police? (mumsnet standard question)
2 You missed out an apostrophe

@Lifeinlists

  1. yes, I have a whistle too!
  2. there's always a debate on here, over whether it's Pedants Corner or Pedant's Corner. I didn't 'miss' an apostrophe, I chose not to use one
  3. it is irrelevant anyway, it was set up so people could bitch about spag away from the main boards, without making people feel unwelcome if their spag is less than perfect. It's mean & bitchy to do as the OP has done.

I get annoyed by incorrect plurals.

Yes, I am a grammar pedant. I own it and delight in it.

@DisabledDemon

Can I send my phone to you?
I'll warn you now, incorrect plurals are the least of its problems.

OK, women (I assume) after my own heart.

Although with the bought/brought thing, I explained this to my sibling not long ago and they were genuinely shocked that one is the past tense of buy and one bring. They said they'd never been told (they are dyslexic to be fair to them) and now they'd had it explained to them it made sense. They just used to guess 😂 so I don't know, maybe I should be more understanding about ect. Do people not know, or don't care, or what?

Don't get my started on "could of" shudder

Na, the bought/brought mix up drives me Bananas. They are 2 different words that have fuck all to do with each other!

Greytulips · 24/08/2024 08:00

Same as aloud and allowed

Is my neighbour aloud to play music all night?

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 24/08/2024 08:04

Well my boys certainly seem to be capable off having foughts on absolutely anything the other one says.

Unless it makes it impossible to work out what someone's saying it doesn't usually bother me. I actually find myself having to go through whether it's their/there/they're and your/you're and other similar words with different meanings a bit now due to the cognitive effects of my illness, also trying to spell words using the wrong version of the sound like writing ph instead of f for financial. I'd rather extend a little grace to those who might be struggling for their own reasons.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 23/08/2024 23:40

@IceCreamWoes It might be rude to call people out, but how else will they learn that they are wrong? Some people go on about boarders when they mean the borders between countries or even flower borders. They do not know the difference and no one has thought to tell them so they carry on merrily thinking they are correct for the rest of their lives!

Estate agents love a flower boarder! And a shower cubical.
Either they don’t have anyone competent to proof-read the blurbs, or they just don’t think it matters.

Unless it’s your child, it’s very hard to correct anyone else’s speech, though. I used to have a colleague who was always saying e.g. ‘I done it’ or ‘I rung her’. Having been forced to leave school at 15 she was very conscious of her lack of education so I’m sure she’d really have liked to know. But I could never bring myself to come across as the superior know-all and tell her.

And wollah, a whole thread appears.
First time I saw the use of 'wollah' it took me ages to get what they meant

I’m working it out… no luck so far 😀

Ilovecleaning · 24/08/2024 08:16

I joined a high school English Department temporarily. I told one of the English teachers I was at X school for many years. “WAS you! I know somebody who teaches there!”
My heart sank.

These don't bother me on here but my DH has one that really grates on me and I correct him every time. He uses the word left instead of let! Wtaf, his Mum was the same. An example is, I just left him go, instead of I just let him go ffs. There are some crackers from FB, one yesterday was, I can't weight to go home. Whit?!

Is your DH conflating ‘let him’ and ‘left him’ as in ‘I left him to it’?

In France grammar is a core course subject in schools (separate from 'French' which is more of a spelling/comprehension and in time, literary course).
So grammar (rules, exception, irregular verbs, tenses) is taught formally from the age of 5/6 years to about 14/15; a long time is devoted to making sure you master your own language. All teachers without exception have impeccable grammar and spelling.
It used to be unusual for anyone to have bad grammar, but things are changing, sadly, for many reasons, but bad spelling or bad grammar will still disqualify you from many jobs or opportunities; it's still a very low bar in selection standards.
Languages are taught in the same way, grammar is separate to the spoken word. English has a vast vocabulary but is grammatically a very simple language - ask almost any foreigner.
I don't know why so many people can't write or speak it properly, but I have noticed that the older generation as a whole - even those from very modest backgrounds - don't seem to have this problem.

I was schooled in the 1970s/80s and we had spelling and grammar drummed into us…if a word was wrongly spelled it was the wrong word…go and write it out correctly 5 times…apparently the teachers at my secondary school, which had 5 or 6 feeder primaries, could tell which pupils had come from my primary school due to spelling and grammar,,,we were the fortunate ones

TipsyJoker · 24/08/2024 08:26

It’s when people use the word itch incorrectly. You scratch an itch but people say, “I itched my arm”. No love, you scratched your arm because it was itchy. Also, you’re and your.

The privilege of a decent eduction should be shared .
Why let people carry on making mistakes ? Are we thinking they are too stupid to learn?

Ah yes, the OP was clearly trying to share her decent education by announcing that it is ‘fucking irritating’ to see mistakes made by the less fortunate. How kind

Retired teacher. Yes, we could tell which primary schools pupils from their handwriting and presentation of their work: date and title underlined etc.
