I've seen about 8 threads in the last 2 days with posters writing ect when they obviously mean etc. I probably am being U but it really does irrationally fucking irritate me!

I need to get out more, yes. I've had two (big) glasses of wine 😂.

So, am I?

Saying that, I love to imagine all these clicky mums outside the schools clicking their fingers like the jets and the sharks from west side story. Please tell me it happens.

It's great fun being a pedant though, essentially it's extremely annoying and it goes up a level of annoyingness (no, I know that isn't a word 😑) when posted in the wrong topic... it's great fun, seriously 😁

JFDIYOLO · 24/08/2024 01:28

And it's ask. Not aks.

murasaki · 24/08/2024 01:33

Being a pedant is great fun. I learned it from my dad. Oddly Dp finds it less funny than I do. Ah well.

English is an odd language to learn, so second language people get a pass from me, but I do wonder if this laxness/mangling amongst native speakers happens in say France, Germany or Spain. I'd speculate that it doesn't to the same degree, would be interested to hear about that.

In France grammar is a core course subject in schools (separate from 'French' which is more of a spelling/comprehension and in time, literary course).
So grammar (rules, exception, irregular verbs, tenses) is taught formally from the age of 5/6 years to about 14/15; a long time is devoted to making sure you master your own language. All teachers without exception have impeccable grammar and spelling.
It used to be unusual for anyone to have bad grammar, but things are changing, sadly, for many reasons, but bad spelling or bad grammar will still disqualify you from many jobs or opportunities; it's still a very low bar in selection standards.
Languages are taught in the same way, grammar is separate to the spoken word. English has a vast vocabulary but is grammatically a very simple language - ask almost any foreigner.
I don't know why so many people can't write or speak it properly, but I have noticed that the older generation as a whole - even those from very modest backgrounds - don't seem to have this problem.

Jacopo · 24/08/2024 01:49

@QuiMoi Regarding your last point, the reason is that we were taught grammar in detail at primary school in the 1950s and 1960s. We did many drills on, for example, plurals - the plural of man is men, the plural of woman is women and so on. We did tests on these things all the time. We also learned more obscure things such as collective nouns, a ‘murder of crows’ being one memorable but not particularly useful example.

WishOnSpaceHardware · 24/08/2024 01:53

@IceCreamWoes you could of posted this in another topic eg pedants corner 😁

AngeloMysterioso · 24/08/2024 02:02

There’s a woman whose tutorials I follow on YouTube for my hobby who pronounces it eck cetera. I tense up every time I hear it!

Geppili · 24/08/2024 02:19

Should be et cetera.

My husband genuinely thought that the word thought is ‘fort’. I only noticed it when he sent me ‘I’ve fort of something we can do this weekend’ at the start of our relationship. I didn’t say anything until it happened again : ‘any forts on that?’ 😭😭

I couldn't marry or even date a man who "fort" this.😖

verityrosa · 24/08/2024 00:53

The one that really winds me up is rest-bite. I see this almost daily, as I’m on a lot of SEN groups, and respite is discussed often.

I've got a soft spot for that one. It's very appropriate, despite its wrongness.

GrinGrin

I think I'm almost at the point that I'd tolerate some simplified spellings (cleek being a good example) if they produced the correct pronunciation. People aren't to blame for not knowing.

QuiMoi · 24/08/2024 02:26

@Jacopo and it worked, didn't it? The advantage of rotes and drills at school is that it gives everyone the same base knowledge, if you don't give that base knowledge, literacy outcomes depends too much on socio-economic factors.

DisabledDemon · 24/08/2024 02:37

LiterallyOnFire · 24/08/2024 00:01

Oh that reminds me.

Almost nobody seems to be able to distinguish phase from faze.

Posters are always claiming not to be phased. Bit sci-fi, maybe?

Well, if you were hit by a phaser, you'd certainly be fazed!

Annoying people! 😡

I get annoyed by incorrect plurals.

Yes, I am a grammar pedant. I own it and delight in it.

Grimgrump · 24/08/2024 03:49

verityrosa · 23/08/2024 23:49

That’s what I thought, but when I’m trying to figure out if it’s ‘me and Claire’ or ‘Claire and I’ I and I’m trying to make sense of the correct grammar, I get so confused. My dad is forever correcting me on this on Facebook! I will say ‘me and Scarlett went to the the theatre today’ and he will say ‘Scarlett and I’ and the other thing he will say is when I say ‘I seen’ and he says ‘I saw’. And I can never work out when you’re meant to say seen or saw 😂

‘Saw’ is past tense and can be used on its own. E.g., I saw a zebra.
‘Seen’ has to be used with another verb such as ‘have’. E.g., I have (I’ve) seen a zebra before.

Musntapplecrumble · 24/08/2024 03:54

Strangest one for me is 'none of us/them was...'
I know it's correct, because it's
not one of us/them was
But it still seems wrong and so much easier to say
'none of us/them were'
😁

Ilovecleaning · 24/08/2024 04:38

People write ect because they don’t know it’s etc.

rayofsunshine86 · 24/08/2024 04:45

Regarding Americanisms, I went to a coffee shop and they said "Hi, welcome to X. What can I get started for you today?".

It took all of my strength not to tell the person off there and then.

itoldyouyouwouldntlikeit · 24/08/2024 06:07

And wollah, a whole thread appears.
First time I saw the use of 'wollah' it took me ages to get what they meant

Differentstarts · 24/08/2024 06:13

Anyone who has ever read my posts know my spelling, grammar and punctuation is terrible as is many people's and I can't say it bothers me or has any effect on my life but I'm really interested to know if the people who this is important to fit into a certain demographic. Whether it's based on age, education, if they read a lot, if their poor etc so il go first I'm 22 didn't really go to school much past 12, I don't read (I can but dont) and I live in a poor area. I don't need to read or write in daily life for my job, I do read to my kids.
