Plenty of comments underneath about small man syndrome.

To think this FB meme is mean and spiteful?

Yeah digs about short men, overweight women, bright ginger hair, cross eyes, really tall women, baldy men.....I mean the list is just endless of how horrible people can be about things that are just totally normal. People who share shit like that clearly were not raised with empathy.

I've been rather surprised by the objectification of men throughout the Olympics, particularly a couple of the swimmers and the relentless pole vaulting footage. I have always acknowledged a key difference in the objectification of men ie the power differential, but having never felt comfortable with it, I've been pretty appalled by the focus on the genitals of the sportsmen. Apparently, we just don't respect anybody and dignity doesn't matter to the Internet.

I wonder if I'm getting older and more bosom-hoicky or if it's saturation point or it's getting worse.

No, I am the same. I have always hated the objectification of men as well as women. Even when much younger and I watched the Diet Coke adverts, and then the Chippendales etc started. It’s definitely not my thing.

the80sweregreat · 23/08/2024 11:11

A few of my colleagues are with men who are not very tall and often make remarks about them. I often wonder why they are with them if being with a taller partner is more important than that person being kind or considerate or just a decent person. Same with those who have lost their hair or have a hair colour they don't like too ( although that might have altered after they met them tbf)
There would be more outrage over a meme about a shorter woman I think!
Why are people so hung up on this stuff ?

I laughed

Me too. No-one has a sense of humour these days.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/08/2024 11:12

It is a bit bad really. It's not like anyone can change their height. My dad was 5'7 and my mum shorter, but he always joked that he'd happily date a taller woman, and just buy a ladder?! I can't say I would be massively attracted to someone shorter than me though. They'd need to be a few inches taller. I don't even know why though particularly?
Some very short women seem to insist on men a foot plus taller?

sunnymountains · 23/08/2024 10:53

I think with the way men treat and talk about woman it's fair play tbh.

Have to agree with you there. Compared to the shit that gets said about women daily online that's quite tame really

If that is your idea of humour you don’t have a sense of humour.

I love a good laugh, I'd never be described as someone who is boring. But laughing at someone's characteristics isn't funny. It's school yard shit. Would you be OK with having the Internet or your friends and family laughing at something about you constantly that you're self conscious about?

KreedKafer · 23/08/2024 11:16

Yes, it's mean. Any negative memes about human physical appearance are mean - fatness, thinness, baldness, whatever. On the scale of meanness/spite I think it's relatively low down the scale, though. It's not something I'd ever share - and I don't think any of my friends would, either - but it's not something I'd do more than roll my eyes at.

FatmanandKnobbin · 23/08/2024 11:17

Its just another random bit of inane crap on the Internet imo. Hardly noteworthy considering all of the dangerous and offensive shit out there.

Oh I do. I just don't find bullying behaviour funny. I'm glad most people are the same.

LoneHydrangea · 23/08/2024 11:19

It’s mean. But the internet is mean. Not sure it’s worth sharing.

What if your son ended up particularly short. Should he have to put up with stuff like this? Or your daughter about something related to her appearance? No one should need to comment on anyone's appearance in a derogatory manner.

newnamethanks · 23/08/2024 11:21

Try being a fat woman. I'm surprised we're allowed out in public.

BillyJeans · 23/08/2024 11:22

It's awful. I feel the same way about jokes about men who are not hugely endowed in the penis department.

As a fat woman, I just find I get ignored.

No one ever told you two wrongs don't make a right?

SmallTownWay · 23/08/2024 11:24

Loads of things are mocked online. Most things actually.

It's not right but why pick out just this one thing OP? Or do you post here about every bit of mocking you see? Or have you not seen other things being mocked?

Maybe her son or husband is short. Maybe it's something she feels strongly about.

Well of course nobody should have to put up with derogatory comments but unfortunately the internet is a cesspit of arseholes which I don't think will change any time soon. I wasn't saying it was right, just pointing out that what gets said about women is far worse than that one meme shown

Devilsmommy · 23/08/2024 11:29

BillyJeans · 23/08/2024 11:24

As I said, not saying it's right, just pointing out that there's a hell of alot worse than that aimed at women all the time. Unfortunately the internet is full of arseholes

Loveandhatred · 23/08/2024 10:45

People are awful to short men. It's disgusting.

Women don't get relentlessly mocked for being short in my experience but do get infantalised. Short men get a much harder time of it.

Try being a woman who's near six foot and tell me women aren't made fun of for their height Hmm

Obviously, I do. I enjoy going to comedy clubs - it's a place you go and laugh... maybe you should try it sometime. It's really good for your MH.

blobby10 · 23/08/2024 11:35

Its as nasty as any meme about a blonde woman being dumb.
