How old is your dining set?

How old is your dining chair and table?

We bought ours 13 years ago. Not cheap but not extortionate. Solid wood. But it’s not very modern.

I still love the table, luckily we picked just plain furniture but we have the money to replace but dh is refusing as they are still in very good knick so he sees no point. God knows what varnish they used but beyond wiping down with a wet microfibre we do nothing else to maintain.

Chairs look similar to first image but I reupholstered myself 7 or so years ago. Material in 2nd image is basically what we have.

Just got watching an interior design instagramer who was just mentioned swapping in and out “pieces” on a regular basis. And I realised beyond cushions, flowers, small decorative items I don’t really do that despite having an interest in interiors and having the money to buy things. Seems a bit wasteful though.

Just wondering if others are a bit more playful with changing interiors.

I might paint but scared to mess up

Sorry, not answer you want! 😱

Our table and chairs came from IKEA in 2002 and are still going strong and I have no plans to change them in any way. We bought spare chairs about 10 years ago, just in case, but they are yet to be unboxed. Hope they aren't faulty as not sure where the receipt is .......

InTheRainOnATrain · 22/08/2024 15:02

Our dining table is from the 1960s. It’s a model you can still buy today though. We got it at an estate sale 6 years ago for what I would consider a bargain, because buying it new would be quite expensive. I can’t imagine wanting to replace it. Chairs we’ve had for 3 years but I’m less attached to those and imagine we might fancy a change in a few years and will sell to buy something new. They’re kartell plastic so IMO hit the sweet spot between wipe clean with a toddler and not looking like I’ve completely given up on nice things 🤣

Swapping in and out pieces sounds batshit. Unless you mean along the lines I want to justify a new living room rug so I’ll move the existing one to the playroom, or in a basic sense like moving a lamp to make room for some Christmas decor!

WonderingWanda · 22/08/2024 15:04

Oak table which is 19 years old. We did have chairs a bit like yours but they were too heavy for the kid when they were little so we sold them and got some easier ones.

goingdownfighting · 22/08/2024 15:05

We replaced our dining table that was 20 years old.

I'd paint the chairs.

FlyHalf · 22/08/2024 15:05

Victorian. From an auction house. Will probably be standing long after the rest of the house has crumbled down around them. I love old stuff.

focacciamuffin · 22/08/2024 15:06

99 years. Bought new by my grandparents when they moved into their first house.

FourthEdition · 22/08/2024 15:06

Our table was super expensive from the Conran shop, but is 25 years old and looks lovelier now than when it was new, because the wood has aged beautifully.

Our chairs are 1900's and were bought from a junk shop when we got married. They cost £5 for 6 and though I've re-covered the cushions several times, they are going strong! The guy in the shop laughed "you youngsters will be bringing these back to sell me them back in a few months when you want something new, you're all the same". That was almost 40 years ago!

ComtesseDeSpair · 22/08/2024 15:07

DH bought ours in 2008. It’s Mid Century style from before Mid Century style had really become properly fashionable again, but it reminded him of home (Michigan) so he bought it. It spent over a decade being barely used and mostly invisible, covered by all his arts and crafts and the chairs often used as clothes racks - which ironically, preserved it very nicely. When we moved in together it was nicer than mine so it’s the one we kept.

We (I, mainly) do swap out bits and pieces of furniture and decor and artwork here and there regularly, as and when we / I see something great; but it’s only wasteful if you throw the older stuff away - we usually put it on Next Door or Gumtree or donate to the local church who distribute it to those in need.

Boopbeepbeepboop · 22/08/2024 15:07

I've had my table about ten years and we got it from an antiques shop. Was supposed to be shabby chic , now it just looks worn but is a great family table for arts and crafts, painting etc, it can't be ruined! The chairs are more modern chairs we added earlier this year. I like the contrast personally. However once my child is older I will definitely be getting some 'nice' furniture! Mine are similar to these photos.

1930s -belonged to my grandparents

CaptainMyCaptain · 22/08/2024 15:09

60 years old. Ercol. I remember my parents buying it and I still have the receipt..

WashableVelvet · 22/08/2024 15:10

The table was made for me around 15 years ago. It’s a bit big for where we are now though, so we may swap it for an older one 😂
The chairs are only a few years old as our old ones weren’t practical for small kids.

StellaCruella · 22/08/2024 15:11

IKEA cheapie about 12 years old? Would love to replace but other priorities at the moment!

Ponderingwindow · 22/08/2024 15:11

I bought the table used about 30 years ago. I had newly purchased chairs for about 25 years and replaced them with pretty cheap ones 5 years ago because I knew they were going to get beat up. It’s time to replace the chairs for certain.

The table really needs to be refinished. I’m torn on what to do. The table itself is solid teak and beautiful. It has intricate carvings and refinishing it will be very expensive. It’s not something I want to do myself. It would be much cheaper to buy modern mass produced junk to replace it.

Wingedharpy · 22/08/2024 15:11

Approximately 37 years old.
Kitchen cupboards are even older!

DillyDilly · 22/08/2024 15:14

Ours are 19 years old and solid oak. I have no intention of replacing any time soon.

I agree with your DH. It’s wasteful replacing furniture unless broken or damaged.

zingally · 22/08/2024 15:15

Growing up, our dining set came from my mums grandparents! If I had to guess, I'd say it was from the 40s or 50s.
When my parents moved, they got a bigger table that came from an antique centre. No idea of the vintage but probably similar.
My current one belonged to my best friends grandpa! He's still alive, and is delighted someone is getting use from it! It's been a great stop-gap while we save up for something a bit more to our taste.

SleepyTraveller · 22/08/2024 15:16

Table belonged to my grandparents. Best guess is 1950s. Unfortunately I had to sell the chairs about 10 years ago, but they were still going strong too. Chairs are now a mixture - some 1960s, some brand new.

blankittyblank · 22/08/2024 15:17

1960s Formica number. Bloody love it

purplecorkheart · 22/08/2024 15:18

About 16 years. I probably would not chose the same type of wood as I did them but they will last a lifetime.

dontcallmelen · 22/08/2024 15:19

1930’s beautiful golden oak, we’ve had it about twenty years I have painted the chairs as they were really quite battered & recovered the seats a few times when I’ve redecorated with a different colour scheme.

ChiffandBipper · 22/08/2024 15:20

I've had my dining table for almost 9 years. It was my grandparents' and they had it for 40+ years before that!

Elphame · 22/08/2024 15:22

1970s I think but repro from an earlier era.

No plans to change it.

Kitchen table was bought in 2003 to fit the space but the chairs with it are 1950s. Again no plans to change.

Everything is solid wood and good for many years yet.

noemail · 22/08/2024 15:26

13 yo furniture is considered new in this house. My sofas are at least 25yo and a lot of things are still what we bought from the Co-op when we got married in 1990. I'm not "swapping out" things in good condition.

My dining table is newer, but only because the first one was very cheap and eventually beyond repair.

Tizerry · 22/08/2024 15:28

around 12 years old, white, extendable from John Lewis, still looks like new, I love it and it's the perfect size for us.
