How old is your dining set?

How old is your dining chair and table?

We bought ours 13 years ago. Not cheap but not extortionate. Solid wood. But it’s not very modern.

I still love the table, luckily we picked just plain furniture but we have the money to replace but dh is refusing as they are still in very good knick so he sees no point. God knows what varnish they used but beyond wiping down with a wet microfibre we do nothing else to maintain.

Chairs look similar to first image but I reupholstered myself 7 or so years ago. Material in 2nd image is basically what we have.

Just got watching an interior design instagramer who was just mentioned swapping in and out “pieces” on a regular basis. And I realised beyond cushions, flowers, small decorative items I don’t really do that despite having an interest in interiors and having the money to buy things. Seems a bit wasteful though.

Just wondering if others are a bit more playful with changing interiors.

I might paint but scared to mess up

99 years. Bought new by my grandparents when they moved into their first house.

My dining chairs are the same! (But 92 years old).

I think the table is about the same. It's oval and not practical but I love it. It is beautiful.

PickAChew · 22/08/2024 15:30

No idea. We bought it second hand. It's oak, solid and practical and works well for us. I'm less keen on the chairs, at least in terms of comfort, but they go with the table. Furniture like that only gets changed for us if it no longer suits our needs rather than just to be "current".

MereDintofPandiculation · 22/08/2024 15:33

Kitchen table (oak) second hand when I got it, and I've had it 50 years. Chairs IKEA about 2000, no plans to change, dining room table (ash) we've had about 30 years and that was second hand.

Turophilic · 22/08/2024 15:34

22 years, no plan to replace it.

KStockHERO · 22/08/2024 15:35

We've had our dining set four years. But its an Epstein original so knocking 100 years old and still going very strong. I love it and will never, ever replace it.

GreatMistakes · 22/08/2024 15:36

I don't go for all this swapping pieces in and out. It's an influencers way of encouraging you to spend money and making herself appealing to sponsors who will help her monetise her account.

After going through the necessary phase of getting everything second band when setting up home, I made a conscious decision to only buy once and buy qualoty e.g linen bedding, hardwood flooring.

The only "disposable" items i buy are towels. One colour throughout the house so it always matches and is easy to replace. Any that look worn go to the local dogs and cats home.

DinnaeFashYersel · 22/08/2024 15:38

We got ours as a wedding present from my parents so 20 years old now.

Our chairs look identical to those in your first image. I am still very happy with them and hope I can get another 20 years out of them.

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/08/2024 15:38

We have a Danish table that DH ate his dinners around as a baby and his parents bought in 1964. Solid wood and extendable for six. I bought six refurbished Ercol dining chairs about a year ago that are from the 1960’s. It’s easy to tell due to spindle numbers which are the newer versus older ones.

BBCLW · 22/08/2024 15:43

My dining room furniture previously belonged to my grandparents. They bought it with money they were given as a wedding present. So I don't know how old it is, 80 years or thereabouts. The chairs do need new upholstery: my sister had the table revarnished about twenty-five years ago when she had it, a few years before she passed it on to me.

Clarabellasingsthisbit · 22/08/2024 15:48

We've had our dining table for just over 30 years. It was ex-display from what was then George Henry Lee,now John Lewis. It's a lovely polished honey-coloured wood(no clue which type😁),extendable.I can't imagine wanting to change it,there's absolutely no need and we've had lots of family meals on it.

We bought the dining chairs separately.
I've reupholstered the seat pads once with a heavy, pale neutral upholstery fabric and they're great.

I'm afraid I can't remember how much we paid, but it felt a lot at the time, especially as we'd just moved house.

hepsitemiz · 22/08/2024 16:05

I've just replaced our set, which was basic and badly matched. The table was teck and never intended for indoors, so it went onto our patio so we can now eat outside when it suits us. The chairs were in bad condition so I replaced with some cute Niels Koefoed chairs which I bought third or fourth hand and had reupholstered. Went to town on the table, with Hardman (Carolina extendable, oak to match the chairs).

I will try to attach photo of chairs as they are cute...

Roryno · 22/08/2024 16:07

Ours belonged to my grandmother. It passed onto my dad, and I’ve recently inherited it. I’ve always loved it. It’s a lovely old oak table. No idea if it belonged to previous generations before my gran.

tedgran · 22/08/2024 16:07

Dining table bought at country house sale, mahogany, probably about 1780, chairs bought at antique shop, probably about 1820. DHs younger daughter has asked for table when we've popped our clogs!

hepsitemiz · 22/08/2024 16:08

Here are the chairs

hepsitemiz · 22/08/2024 16:09

Bought it last January, a folding gate leg table to maximise space in that room. I've had 4 tables in 32 years - it's probably been my biggest indulgence in life. The last one (glass, round) is currently dismantled and stored. I'll probably foist it on one of the kids when they leave home.

Rory17384949 · 22/08/2024 16:16

Why would you replace them if there's nothing wrong with them?
We got ours when we moved to this house in 2016, they're just cheap ikea ones but that meant we weren't too precious about the DC painting and doing crafts on the table.
I'm unlikely to replace them until we move house and need a bigger table.
My parents have an antique table they've had since they got married in 1979!

Love those chairs which are reminiscent of 1960s/70s G plan.
We had some of the G plan chairs but replaced them in the 1980s!

fussychica · 22/08/2024 16:19

Solid pine, about 20 years old, often think of changing it but it would be wasteful as it's still in perfect nick.
Have some Ducal pine bedroom furniture in the spare bedroom which is about 40 years old. DH did a fantastic job of painting them and rewaxing the tops. They look great so wouldn't change them now.

poetryandwine · 22/08/2024 16:20

I love your chairs, @hepsitemiz

Our dining room table and chairs are 1930s mahogany, a great buy at auction years ago when our budget was tight.

Movinghouseatlast · 22/08/2024 16:22

We have 2. One is 24 years old, in the kitchen. Its distressed French oak, from France. I love it. The other is 8 years old, in our dining room, only bought because we moved house and got a separate dining room. It was from an antique shop, cost £650 but it's basically on old table painted.

I've been thinking recently that if I'd known just how long I'd have things I'd have pushed myself for a slightly better version. One of our sofas is 25 years old, from Multiyork. I wish I'd spent a few hundred quid more, as we got the cheapest one. We had it recovered 10 years ago. I've also got 25 year old Multiyork curtains that still look new.

Mymanyellow · 22/08/2024 16:26

Love your chairs@hepsitemiz
I bought mine from face bay 12 years ago when I moved into my flat.

Early 2000's Ikea. It's looking pretty shabby, the veneer is a bit dodgy in places and the children haven't been kind to it over the years but it's huge and really useful for big family get togethers.
I'm looking into painting it and just replacing the chairs but chairs are bloody expensive!
