How old is your dining set?

How old is your dining chair and table?

We bought ours 13 years ago. Not cheap but not extortionate. Solid wood. But it’s not very modern.

I still love the table, luckily we picked just plain furniture but we have the money to replace but dh is refusing as they are still in very good knick so he sees no point. God knows what varnish they used but beyond wiping down with a wet microfibre we do nothing else to maintain.

Chairs look similar to first image but I reupholstered myself 7 or so years ago. Material in 2nd image is basically what we have.

Just got watching an interior design instagramer who was just mentioned swapping in and out “pieces” on a regular basis. And I realised beyond cushions, flowers, small decorative items I don’t really do that despite having an interest in interiors and having the money to buy things. Seems a bit wasteful though.

Just wondering if others are a bit more playful with changing interiors.

I might paint but scared to mess up

Sorry I can't get past 25 year old sofas 🤢

Why - one of mine is about 250 year old - was reupholstered about 8 years ago so only the frame is actually that old but why would you scrap a decent sofa when you can renovate it?

HP07 · 22/08/2024 22:45

Old! Ours belonged to my husbands grandparents and he remembers sitting at it his whole life at their house. We inherited them about 10 years ago. They really need sanding down and refinishing as the the poor table is looking worse for wear but we’re still in the arts and crafts phase with our children so do see a whole lot of point in doing much with them at the moment.
I can’t really imagine getting rid of them. Even if we did I’m sure they would just go to another family member as they have become very much a keepsake/nostalgic piece of furniture.

merrymaryquitecontrary · 22/08/2024 22:49

Everyone who hasn't shared pictures is being very unreasonable, I'm dying to see them, especially the one circa 1600.
The very idea of bringing in new pieces and changing them around is so incredibly what is wrong with consumerism, massively fuelled by MC instagrammers.
My table is a large extendable Ikea one, bought for £10 in the bargain corner as it was very scratched. I just threw a table cloth on it and it's perfectly functionable. It's in storage now as we are moving soon and will not be replaced until it is on it's last legs.

PemberleynotWemberley · 22/08/2024 22:59

My house is about 600 years old, so even 18th century furniture looks rakish and modern! Seriously though, tables don't change that fast and don't need swapping out every few years, unless you have a strong desire for something very particular like Ercol
It doesn't do it for me, I'm wedded to my 'brown' furniture, but the aesthetic is strong and it works beautifully in the right setting. Don't allow yourself to be bullied by influencers!

mondaytosunday · 22/08/2024 23:40

My current one is three years old. My last one wouldn't fit in this house - and the table was 8 years old when I sold it but the chairs were from the 1940s, though I only had them for 8 years.

Wherearemymarbles · 22/08/2024 23:53

LegoShark · 23/08/2024 00:17

focacciamuffin · 22/08/2024 15:06

99 years. Bought new by my grandparents when they moved into their first house.

Sterling effort! I’m firmly in the one generation buys and the next re-upholsters camp.

StormingNorman · 23/08/2024 00:24

50 ish years. DH inherited it from his grandmother. Needs some TLC which we’ll probably get to in the next couple of years…you know, because one chair is a death trap now so it’s getting urgent 😂

Beamur · 23/08/2024 00:29

Ercol chairs. Belonged to DH's granny (he's still annoyed with himself for ditching the matching table) plus a table FIL made.
Furniture only gets changed around here if it's broken!

MaMisled · 23/08/2024 00:45

Mine is 50 years old, given to me when a family member replaced it 30 years ago. I can't part with it because my late father sat at it many times, my children played at it and under it in dens and in it when it was turned upside down to make a boat. Its ingrained with 50 fabulous Christmases, hundreds of birthdays, happy meals, important conversations, homework, craftwork, work work. Puppies have chewed the legs, cats have scratched them. That table and chairs has seen so much joy, pain and spillages.

DiscoBeat · 23/08/2024 01:15

Nearly 40 years old. It's solid mahogany and beautiful so we'll never change it!

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 23/08/2024 02:07

We bought a solid oak table and 4 chairs from Asda living several years ago - maybe 8 or 9 years ago now - and apart from putting a table cloth over it we've done nothing to it. I hope it lasts and lasts because it was expensive!

MeAgainAndAgain · 23/08/2024 03:08

Daily use of a basic (ie not antique/quality of any sort) set from the early 1970s here. I’d like to sand all the old varnish off one day and recover the seats etc.

JaninaDuszejko · 23/08/2024 05:15

6 Multicoloured Jacobsen chairs (the Christine Keeler ones) bought by my mum in 1972.

Fun fact, the chair Christine Keeler was famously photographed on was actually a cheap knock off of the 3107 chair.

KimberleyClark · 23/08/2024 06:47

34 years old. It’s the only dining set we’ve ever had.

Auburngal · 23/08/2024 06:57

My dining set is 14 years old. Bought at the then Co op department store.

My parents have a 43 year old G Plan dining set. They had the slats on the chair backs reinforced and changed the fabric on the seats as was so early 80s. They can’t remember the last time the table was extended

FountainsOfPens · 23/08/2024 07:01

About 18 years old - came from Habitat.

I've sanded and reoiled the table and chairs and reupholstered the chair seats since. I think about changing it but it's such a work horse and takes such a bashing that it would upset me if it were a new one going through that. It's basically a dining table.

PartnersInCrime · 23/08/2024 07:14

About 20 years. Recovered the cushion bit a few years ago/put in new foam. No plans to change it.

AgnesX · 23/08/2024 07:24

We swapped our glass Caligaris table for Ercol around 6-7 years ago and it's staying. It's now a permanent fixture (unless I win the lottery and can afford Ercol Windsor).

Member984815 · 23/08/2024 07:50

If they are solid and in good knick don't replace them, you won't get the same quality for the same price and will regret it

MapleTreeValley · 23/08/2024 07:56

Ours is about 16-17 years old and going strong. Nothing compared to some on here though!

rzb · 23/08/2024 08:01

Our chairs were made about 20 years ago, using very antique oak for the backs. They needed reupholstering when we got them and they now sport lovely wool seat pads. They didn't particularly go with the table we had (a sentimental value family hand-me-down). It took us a couple of years to happen across an Ercol table in great condition that goes well with them, and we're now storing the sentimental one (still in great useable condition, probably due back into fashion in a decade or so) for when our kids might need it. I can't imagine we will change our dining set again, until we're old and infirm and the chairs are too heavy for us to move.

I'm loving how many posts here mention furniture handed on through families or which have been bought preloved.

Rocknrollstar · 23/08/2024 08:04

We have a teak table and 6 chairs which we bought in Heal’s sale 50 years ago. We have had the chairs re-upholstered. The table extends and, as newly weds, friends asked why we needed a table that would seat 14 people. I love it when all the family sit round it. It cost £140 (with a sideboard) and we had to phone my mother and ask her to lend us the money to buy it!

rzb · 23/08/2024 08:11

@MaMisled Your post brings to mind the reaction of a lady who bought my kids' play table and chairs. We'd got it at least second hand, and it was a lovely solid set - real solid wood, with the table legs painted in bright colours, as were the seat and back of the chairs. We used it for everything crafty, arty, mucky, adding a few dents and scrapes to the ones already there. I'd cleaned it up as best I could to make it a bit more presentable to sale, but it was still very evidently well used and sporting multiple coloured paint and pen marks, glue and the odd bit of un-removeable glitter. When the lady came to collect it and saw it, she was clearly emotional and commented that it was perfect, beautiful, and "a real companion".

I want all my furniture to be 'companion furniture'.
