How old is your dining set?

How old is your dining chair and table?

We bought ours 13 years ago. Not cheap but not extortionate. Solid wood. But it’s not very modern.

I still love the table, luckily we picked just plain furniture but we have the money to replace but dh is refusing as they are still in very good knick so he sees no point. God knows what varnish they used but beyond wiping down with a wet microfibre we do nothing else to maintain.

Chairs look similar to first image but I reupholstered myself 7 or so years ago. Material in 2nd image is basically what we have.

Just got watching an interior design instagramer who was just mentioned swapping in and out “pieces” on a regular basis. And I realised beyond cushions, flowers, small decorative items I don’t really do that despite having an interest in interiors and having the money to buy things. Seems a bit wasteful though.

Just wondering if others are a bit more playful with changing interiors.

I might paint but scared to mess up

Table we bought new almost 20 years ago. Very solid. No intention of ever changing it unless we move somewhere much smaller.

Chairs are probably about 100 years old? We bought them more than 10 years ago (don't remember clearly). I sometimes consider changing them for something a bit more comfortable, but it's definitely not a priority. I still really like the way they look so think I would struggle to find something better.

I think the idea that you should change round stuff like this regularly is really pernicious. Our sofa belonged to my parents, so it is about 50 years old. It has been reupholstered a number of times. I bought a second one about 20 years ago which I also intend to reupholster soon-ish. I intend to keep them both until I no longer have a use for two large sofas.

I have my grandparent's teak dining table. 1960s MCM from a good quality brand. It's an 8 seater but could really do with a 12 seater but no plans to get one. In fantasy world I'd get the cross extending table but in the real world we'll probably inherit MIL's lovely table some day.

64 years old. My parents received it as a wedding present and I inherited it about 3 years ago. WhenI was first setting up my own home I was frustrated by not being able to find anything like it. I do need to get the chairs re-covered at some point.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/08/2024 16:37

Ours are solid oak and about 13 years old and we have no intention of replacing, ever !

BigDahliaFan · 22/08/2024 16:37

About 1880, we bought it from someone who was moving and had no room for it anymore. About £600 if I remember rightly.

It's beautiful dark wood, quite light and comes apart into several pieces so easy to store and move. It can seat, 2,4,6,8,10 or 12 (14 at a push) depending on what configuration you put it together in.

Matching chairs from the same era, we've had to pick up a couple of similar ones to replace ones that weren't very sturdy.

We have a Skovby circular table in the kitchen that expands https://www.skovby.com/en-gb/products/dining-tables/skovby-33. Second hand, £200 with chairs. It's a bit worn on top but it's so useful and expands to seat 8. It must be 25 years old.

AnnaMagnani · 22/08/2024 16:38

Approx 150 years. Oak, looks stunning and is immaculate. It was made to last!

mitogoshi · 22/08/2024 16:39

Bought mine in 2008, chairs been replaced as cheaper than recovering (£300 for 8!) but table still fine

hepsitemiz · 22/08/2024 16:39

Gee thanks, Poetry and ButWhy...

The ones I really wanted were not available for love or money. Baumann Gondole, very elegant.

But, no regrets, because the ones I got are very comfortable and I found the Baumann ones just a little less so.

BigDahliaFan · 22/08/2024 16:39

WE used to have an M&S one that had a bit in the middle you extended it with but you had to approach with extreme caution, we never ever managed to extend it without someone getting a black fingernail from being caught by the mechanism.

dragonfliesandbees · 22/08/2024 16:39

So you still love your table but want to get a new one because someone on Instagram told you you should?! Stop listening to influencers, OP.

I’m not sure how old ours is, my husband already had it when I met him and we’ve been together 12 years. No plans to replace it.

JadeSeahorse · 22/08/2024 16:41

12 years old Mango wood with matching chairs. Still immaculate as only used for special occasions and the exact same set is still sold so thankfully not outdated.

Still love it so not going anywhere soon. 😁

bridgetreilly · 22/08/2024 16:42

I would swap in and out things like vases or pictures, maybe a cushion. I would not be swapping furniture in and out. This is why you should buy furniture you really love, not furniture that’s trendy, because a dining table should last at least a lifetime, tbh. Mine is a £15 IKEA simple square table that’s 16 years old and still in good condition. I do use a PVC tablecloth on it and that gets changed every few years, usually when the paint marks are more visible than the pattern.

Wideskye · 22/08/2024 16:43

Approx 110 + years old. DH Great Grandparents furniture. We got it as a stop gap but have had it for 35 years! I have reupholstered it a couple of times.
It is beautiful wood. We tend to eat most daily meals kitchen.

HeliotropePJs · 22/08/2024 16:45

Ours were passed down through the family. I believe my great-grandfather made them, probably in the 30s or 40s. We have a few other things that he built, as well. They're nothing particularly special, just simple rail-back/vertical slat chairs, but they're the chairs I grew up using, and I prefer them to something new. The table, on the other hand, looks like it was made in the 80s, with a fake woodgrain laminate-type top. I don't love the look, but it's so practical that we've just kept it. (And it's been easier to just keep it than to go through the trouble of upgrading.) Maybe it's time to replace it.

ancientoak · 22/08/2024 16:47

Oak table c1660 !!!! Chairs are probably Victorian. It's a "b" to polish but we love it.

Bideshi · 22/08/2024 16:48

Table 1840s wind-out. Chairs 1820-ish. 2 carvers 1790s

CleverLemonCat · 22/08/2024 16:49

Solid wood from MFI in 2000 ( remember them!). No intention of replacing, will outlive me!

hepsitemiz · 22/08/2024 16:49

Here are the Baumann Gondole chairs

They date from the 60s, I think, and they have not gone out of fashion since then!

Nothing wrong with changing chairs - especially if you buy second or third hand - when the originals become knackered. My original ones were bought cheap about twenty years ago... yes I would have bought something of better quality and timeless style first time round if I could have afforded it.

Hadalifeonce · 22/08/2024 16:50

Our chairs are about 40 years old, they were expensive, but I had them recovered about 6 or so years ago.
Similar with sofas, expensive solid furniture, have had them recovered also

DoublePeonies · 22/08/2024 16:51

Ours are 17 years old, as they were a wedding present from my grandmother. She also gave my parents a diningroom table and chairs for their wedding. They still use theirs too.

scoobiedew · 22/08/2024 16:54

Table - made to order in 2021
Chairs - made in the 60s (bought as vintage)

CindyBirdsong · 22/08/2024 16:54

Mine is 1970's bought from a charity shop. I bought a second table exactly the same from Ebay about 10 years ago for 99p.

BotterMon · 22/08/2024 16:55

Around 30 years old. Made from oak for us by my FIL (RIP). The chair cushions do need recovering this autumn but would never change the table or chairs as it's beautiful as are the two dining room cabinets he also made us. He was a so talented.
