DH has and hidden something valuable "for safety"

Light hearted...sort of, because this is getting worse.

He has form for this, despite us having two secure safes in the house. He is quite anxious about being burgled.

He has hidden his watch somewhere in the house. We've been looking for two days. I am very tidy and organised. He is tidy but not as organised and has a lot of stuff.

This is driving me mad. My mum has said a prayer to St.Anthony for me😂

He chooses really weird places..I once found the (only) set of keys to our safe inside the cardboard box of a light bulb...which he had forgotten about! And he hid my car keys between the beach towels in the airing cupboard..We have an agreed spot for my keys now.

Can any one think of a weird place we haven't looked?

@rochenut OP now lost like her husband’s watch.

DogsAtDawn · 20/08/2024 18:47

I have me one of them.

Me: Where is it?
Him: I put it in a safe place, don't worry.
Me: Where's the safe place?
Him: I forgot.
Me: You need to find it.
Him: I'll look.
Me: Check on/in/under X.
Him: Much noise in random rooms.
Me: Are you looking in/on/under X.
Him: FFS, give me a minute. I AM LOOKING FOR IT, OKAY!
Me: Please, X.
Him: a two hour human tornado, covering ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWYZ0123456789-NOPE-9876543210ZYWVUTSRQPONMLKJIHGFEDCBA-NOPE-shit,Shit,SHIT. Much freaking out. A declaration that I must have had it, it's been chucked out, he never touched it, it never got bought back home from the shop or got left on a bus etc., somebody nicked it (nobody has been in), the cat hid it (we don't have a cat) and eventually that I've hidden it to mess with him (oooh, me favourite). It's gone, never to be seen again, alas, woe is he. Poor, lost, tormented soul. "I don't get it. I have looked ABSOLUTELY EVERYWHERE".
He sits down for two minutes. Disappears. Reappears. IT in hand.
Me: Where was it.
Him: On top of X

Now, as a result, everything else that was in/on/under ABCD is now under/in/on ZHQ3T86F.

If I'm feeling particularly mean, I will go in at about the 1 hour 50 mark, pick it up off the top of X and wave it at him but he doesn't like that. "I lost it. Let me find it. Just give me a sec", are famous words around these parts.

The emotional fallout of a full on search is diverse. Let's just say I have a soft foam baseball bat and I use it. He purchased it and presents for a soft battering. Yeah, he's also a kinky weirdo with a sense of humour.

Wouldn't have him any other way.

come again?

rochenut · 20/08/2024 18:48

oh i get you! 😆

Beebopwasthebest · 20/08/2024 18:48

Thanks for some more suggestions!
Sadly we have been burgled and it was very upsetting and stressful.
It's an odd and irrational thing to do but he is obviously not the only person in the world to do this. but it's done now and if it turns up ..I shall return to update.
Thanks again for the support and the similar tales..with happy endings!

watch.

We found a solid gold pocket watch in a house we bought. The owners had passed away and their sons had searched the house and thought it had been sold. We only found it because we removed the fitted bookcases from a room used as an office. Fortunately we still had a phone number for the oldest son. Turned out it was his grandfather’s watch and he was inherited it, just couldn’t find it.

That's a sweet story. Returning a valued sentimental family heirloom. So lucky you still had the phone number.

I should think a lot of precious family memories end up permanently lost in such circumstances.

InSpainTheRain · 20/08/2024 19:17

That would drive me insane. But why are you looking? Just make sure you have your house key and car key and purse, he can crack on and look for whatever he looses. That's what I do with DH - if he lost it he finds it.

AdoraBell · 20/08/2024 21:10

I’m just glad we could return the watch to him, it was a very beautiful piece.

No man who has a waterproof watch EVER goes near water with it if the watch is expensive. Could be a Rolex designed to go to the Titanic, it gets put to one side.

All the people I know, who have waterproof Rolexes swim in them, it is naff to buy a waterproof watch and keep it away from water.

OhcantthInkofaname · 21/08/2024 18:00

I do this in my house. But I have a safe place that burglars won't touch. I hide things wrapped well in plastic containers at the bottom of the clean cat litter bucket.

Laura95167 · 21/08/2024 19:19

Instead of looking for it give him your watch and ask him to put it somewhere safe.. see if his is already there

bobster31 · 21/08/2024 19:26

Inside a vegetable bag in the freezer?

honeyfox · 21/08/2024 19:37

A while after my mum died, my dad came down from his bedroom with a small cardboard box that exercise bands had come in (and were still in) and told me to look in it. There was a thousand dollars in cash at the bottom. Mum had got it as my brother was going on holidays to the US two years previously and it never got to him!

Cuwins · 21/08/2024 20:05

My grandad used to do this but I don't think with anything very valuable (he didn't have anything of much value), however he was an incredibly forgetful (but lovely) man. As a child I got so fed up of having to find his glasses for him I got him a glasses stand for Xmas!
His favourite was hiding boxes of chocolates or biscuits they had been given as presents ' somewhere safe' but being unable to remember where that was. Resulting in us regularly finding several years out of date boxes!
Favourite hiding places I remember- under the bed, in the wardrobe or back of drawers, in the outbuilding or outside toilet, in the pantry or on top of the piano.

Teddybear23 · 21/08/2024 20:54

Toilet roll holder?

AlleycatMarie · 21/08/2024 21:25

In the mouth of a stuffed toy? Speaking from experience!

pollymere · 21/08/2024 21:33

Prayers to St Jude. I believe he has put it in a pot or vase. I don't think it's a teapot.

I originally thought pocket of an old coat or in his underwear drawer. I think he put it there first then decided to put it somewhere safer. The pot or vase is quite high up on a shelf although part of me says piano...

Let me know...

MellersSmellers · 21/08/2024 22:08

In the toe of a boot?
Once put £100 there and forgot about it until it was found the following winter...
My husband is like this, but now his memory is failing we're routinely in your situation.

PeachShaker · 21/08/2024 23:30

In a Container in the fridge?

PorridgeEater · 21/08/2024 23:46

It will probably turn up when he's given up and is thinking about something else.
Meanwhile get another watch? (cheap one so doesn't matter about hiding it).

Andthereitis · 22/08/2024 00:06

I've lost my watch. It needed charging last week before I went away. Ah well it'll turn up.

St Anthony is usually very helpful but I'm not in a rush so I'll save him for the next thing.

Dibbydoos · 22/08/2024 01:17

No idea really, but maybe inside a pair of shoes.

You'll find it in the last place you look 😚
