DH has and hidden something valuable "for safety"

Light hearted...sort of, because this is getting worse.

He has form for this, despite us having two secure safes in the house. He is quite anxious about being burgled.

He has hidden his watch somewhere in the house. We've been looking for two days. I am very tidy and organised. He is tidy but not as organised and has a lot of stuff.

This is driving me mad. My mum has said a prayer to St.Anthony for me😂

He chooses really weird places..I once found the (only) set of keys to our safe inside the cardboard box of a light bulb...which he had forgotten about! And he hid my car keys between the beach towels in the airing cupboard..We have an agreed spot for my keys now.

Can any one think of a weird place we haven't looked?

My God, Mumsnet is fabulous for giving an insight into other peoples minds. I can't even imagine it having one safe, let alone two. And then to go and hide things separately? I just cannot imagine what is going through peoples heads. He must feel very under threat.

We have two safes but as bedside tables so not really used as safes but they do lock and weigh a lot!

My husband would probably hide something under a floor board.

CharSiu · 20/08/2024 13:19

I wouldn’t assist at all.

SmiteTheeWithThunderbolts · 20/08/2024 13:23

My mum used to do that - I called it squirreling. Although not with anything valuable, just things like her bus pass.

In future try to appeal to his sense of logic: if you hide a valuable item and can't remember where it is, if you were to be burgled you wouldn't know if the burglars had stolen it or whether it was still hidden.

samanthablues · 20/08/2024 13:31

@Beebopwasthebest And he hid my car keys between the beach towels in the airing cupboard..

Why did this maniac hid your car keys? 🤔

OldCrocks · 20/08/2024 13:31

Christ, I couldn't cope with this. I have enough trouble finding things as it is, without someone actively hiding them.

Cestfoutu · 20/08/2024 13:38

No help with this item, but we've started taking a photo on our phone of where things are hidden (when we go on holiday) as we had this problem once!

IDontLikePinaColadas · 20/08/2024 13:42

Oh I did this with my grandmother’s ring she left me about 6 years ago - god knows where I put it “for safekeeping”. I suspect when we move house I may finally find it.

Jaq27 · 20/08/2024 13:46

You might think I'm mad, but 'Asking the Pixies' has proven to work for myself, my husband and many doubting friends.
Tell him to stand quietly in an area where he last remembers having his watch. He can close his eyes if it helps, but he must say out loud and very clearly, "Dear Pixies. I have lost my watch. Please find it and return it to me. Thank you."

The lost item is then quite easily found, even somewhere you've looked before.
Well, anything is worth a try :)

midlifeattheoasis · 20/08/2024 13:49

DH keeps his watches in a pair of socks

CombatLingerie · 20/08/2024 13:50

How annoying OP I have had many elderly relatives who hid things over the years. I love the term ‘squirrelling’ from a PP. However the strangest one I ever saw was when a friend bought a very old house. They decided to remodel the separate toilet and bathroom into one room. Knocking through the wall they found hundreds of pounds sandwiched between the plaster and the wall. The wall had then been wallpapered several times over. When were the previous owners ever going to get the money out? The money was so old it wasn’t even legal tender anymore. This was over forty years ago and I still ponder on it😂.

LovelyDaaling · 20/08/2024 13:50

Having a lot of belongings feeds into his anxiety. If he could let go of some of it, that would help him.

Soonenough · 20/08/2024 13:54

My friend got a Xmas card with large sum of money from her husband . Put the card on display, shoved cash in dressing gown pocket . Yep , got a new robe also and come January, donated old dressing gown . Luckily remembered in time to get it back as volunteers hadn't yet sorted the bags.

My father used to hide cash in the loft . Pretty safe but he also kept a few quid around so he could give it to robbers if they demanded cash .

Mirabai · 20/08/2024 13:55

Your keys need air tags..

blackpear · 20/08/2024 13:55

My mother used to do this - try in the flour or sugar containers . . .

SinnerBoy · 20/08/2024 13:59

Goodness! After day one, I'd not be helping at all.

TerfTalking · 20/08/2024 14:02

Has St Anthony come up trumps yet OP? My mum says a prayer to him for almost everything, he’s very good at finding us a parking space when car parks are rammed 😂😂

Pedallleur · 20/08/2024 14:05

Mirabai · 20/08/2024 13:55

Your keys need air tags..

But what if your phone was taken or the thief comes equipped with an Apple device to locate your air tags? All this hiding is just akin to madness. Take a pic. Send it to other person or write a note and leave in a place you know/remember.

halava · 20/08/2024 14:09

If trying to avoid burglaries, think logically. A burglar wants to get in and get out ASAP so they pull everything out of wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, under mattresses, beds, in the airing cupboard etc. They wouldn't have the time to check every little box or cup or whatever for hidden goods.

I have two hidey places. Not visible and cannot be pulled down or out. Mind you, It would probably be the first place a burglar would look, but I doubt it. I asked several people to find them in ten minutes and none could.

Demonhunter · 20/08/2024 14:09

This level of paranoia would drive me mad! I'm mean though and would probably tell him to ask the phrogger in the loft if he has it.

larkstar · 20/08/2024 14:11

As @TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams and @Angrymum22 suggested - my thought would be - in a shoe - it's about the right size for a wristwatch.

Nonononoway · 20/08/2024 14:14

Well any burglar doing research on mn has lots of places to try now !

Cherrysoup · 20/08/2024 14:15

Entirely his own silly fault, I’d be making random suggestions from my nice comfy position while carrying on with whatever. Pretty stupid of him.

Mary28 · 20/08/2024 14:17

I've stopped helping my husband look for stuff. He's incredibly ungrateful and usually blames me for moving it in the first place. I stopped years ago and it feels much better. It's his watch and it's not an urgent item surely, it's in the house, I'd just relax and let it turn up in it's own time.

Waffle78 · 20/08/2024 14:22

I couldn't find our back door key for a few weeks. Packing to go on holiday I found it in the zip part of one of our cases. Not a clue wtf I put it in there.🤣🤣🤣

MermaidEyes · 20/08/2024 14:26

Why wouldn't he put it in one of the safes?

Get a decent house alarm, ring doorbell, cameras inside and out ....

My mum used to hide everything every time she stepped foot out the house.
