DH has and hidden something valuable "for safety"

Light hearted...sort of, because this is getting worse.

He has form for this, despite us having two secure safes in the house. He is quite anxious about being burgled.

He has hidden his watch somewhere in the house. We've been looking for two days. I am very tidy and organised. He is tidy but not as organised and has a lot of stuff.

This is driving me mad. My mum has said a prayer to St.Anthony for me😂

He chooses really weird places..I once found the (only) set of keys to our safe inside the cardboard box of a light bulb...which he had forgotten about! And he hid my car keys between the beach towels in the airing cupboard..We have an agreed spot for my keys now.

Can any one think of a weird place we haven't looked?

Have you got a tower computer?
Friend unscrewed panel and put passports inside before screwing back.

Surely that's a fire risk?
I speak as the girl (aged 7) who found the perfect hiding place for her sixpence pocket money ‐ between the pins of a 3-pin plug. When I put it 'safely' into the wall socket in my bedroom there was a huge bang and all the lights went out. I've never seen my Dad move so fast!

MumblesParty · 20/08/2024 15:15

I agree with others that this is his problem to sort.
But in future, especially if he hides stuff that matters to both of you, he should send himself (or you) a text or email saying where he's put things.
I remember when storing our camping equipment in different places (tent/crockery in garage, air beds in attic etc) I sent myself an email saying where everything was, to save me having to hunt around.

notjaneausten · 20/08/2024 15:16

Might he have dementia?

Ezekiela · 20/08/2024 15:29

His watch, he hid it: his problem. Not your circus, not your monkeys.

niadainud · 20/08/2024 15:38

I can't get over the idiocy of owning a safe and then hiding your valuables somewhere else where they can be forgotten about or thrown away.

it is a sign that something may not be all as it should with this chap

the op doesn’t clarify whether they’ve even ever actually been burgled

A burglar wants to get in and get out ASAP so they pull everything out of wardrobes, cupboards, drawers, under mattresses, beds, in the airing cupboard etc. They wouldn't have the time to check every little box or cup or whatever for hidden goods.

That's true to an extent, but when I got burgled, many years ago, a few really well hidden things were taken. The Police told me, "The bastards learn exactly where to look."

Not your problem? Tell him to look up his arse.

Long term, I would suggest therapy. I know you've presented it in a light hearted way but this level of control and anxiety isn't healthy.

That first line made me howl..🤣🤣

Threesacrow · 20/08/2024 17:03

We found my MIL's jewellery on top of the kitchen cupboards just before the house was sold. They were in the will but we couldn't find them. Tell dh that if he insists on hiding valuables, he must give you the instructions for finding them.

AdoraBell · 20/08/2024 17:10

We found a solid gold pocket watch in a house we bought. The owners had passed away and their sons had searched the house and thought it had been sold. We only found it because we removed the fitted bookcases from a room used as an office. Fortunately we still had a phone number for the oldest son. Turned out it was his grandfather’s watch and he was inherited it, just couldn’t find it.

Morningcrows · 20/08/2024 17:21

I'm so glad I don't have anything valuable. Why have stuff if it makes you anxious?

Here are my suggestions.
In a slipper, in between the napkins, in the tea caddy, in a book that's hollowed out, in a dvd box,

Applesandpears23 · 20/08/2024 11:50

This may save you from a repeat. When we hide things we whatsapp each other to say what it is and where it is hidden. Try to introduce this to save you from the next instance.

What a great idea! I'm afraid I have form for this, and as I'm getting older, it's getting worse, so I think I'll give it a try with anything I plan on putting in a 'safe' place, lol.

Normallynumb · 20/08/2024 17:27

In the bathroom where you keep the toiletries
Dressing gown pocket
A vase
Kitchen canister( tea, sugar or coffee type)
In a pair of boots
Behind something on the windowsill
In laundry basket
His watch, his problem.

Maddy70 · 20/08/2024 17:33

Wrapped it in some t shirts in his drawer

Wabberjockey · 20/08/2024 17:34

Omg. How do you cope with this level of utter stupidity? I think I’d have murdered him by now.

ThinWomansBrain · 20/08/2024 17:37

his watch - not like the car keys that you might have needed, let him get on with it.

BotterMon · 20/08/2024 17:37

Not your circus not your monkeys.

My father used to hide presents for my mother and often found them years later. It must be a male thing. (and no apologies for not using DF/DM which is twee)

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 20/08/2024 17:44

In one of the handbags you don’t use much.

indecisivewoman81 · 20/08/2024 17:48

My DH did the exact same thing last year and couldn't find his watch for months!

It was in his sock drawer hidden in a sock!!

MonsteraMama · 20/08/2024 17:54

Get him one of these for future hiding.

TheNormalRules · 20/08/2024 18:02

Have you searched:

The freezer (inside the bags of vegetables, for example)?

Every pan/saucepan that has a lid?

With the Christmas decorations?

The sugar bowl?

Indoor plant pots?

Taped under drawers or shelves?

You may be right, but it seems to be commonplace judging by posts on this thread.

LizzieBennett73 · 20/08/2024 18:16

My DC were so sorry for me spending my life looking for DH's car keys that they got him a Tile for christmas to attach to them. It works. Only the daft fecker is deaf as a post as well as forgetful and I still ending being the one to find them as he can't hear it........ sigh. He's 60 Hmm by the time he's 70 I'll be rocking in a padded cell somewhere.

Leave him to it OP, he needs to learn the consequences of his stupidity.

well the OP doesn’t help matters but no responding to any questions!

EatCrow · 20/08/2024 18:38

I’m imagining would-be burglars making notes from this thread for future reference!
