DH has and hidden something valuable "for safety"

Light hearted...sort of, because this is getting worse.

He has form for this, despite us having two secure safes in the house. He is quite anxious about being burgled.

He has hidden his watch somewhere in the house. We've been looking for two days. I am very tidy and organised. He is tidy but not as organised and has a lot of stuff.

This is driving me mad. My mum has said a prayer to St.Anthony for me😂

He chooses really weird places..I once found the (only) set of keys to our safe inside the cardboard box of a light bulb...which he had forgotten about! And he hid my car keys between the beach towels in the airing cupboard..We have an agreed spot for my keys now.

Can any one think of a weird place we haven't looked?

In a cereal box?

Taped to the underside of a table?

I need to know now.

Whatifitallgoesright · 20/08/2024 14:28

It's by some old DVDs.

Danielp87 · 20/08/2024 14:28

Check his wrist

Lucia573 · 20/08/2024 14:31

Not helpful to you, but apparently you shouldn’t hide car keys. Most burglars will leave once they’ve got your car keys, leading to less damage and loss overall.

Keep a list of where things are hidden. Have that list virtually or on paper with you. Mother used to do this, it worked

😆

NetballHoop · 20/08/2024 14:43

My DM used to keep all sorts in her freezer from jewelry to documents (in zip lock bags).
I do sometimes hide stuff if we're going away for a while but I always take photos of where I've hidden them so I can quickly find them when back home.

Lacdulancelot · 20/08/2024 14:44

In future get him to take a photo of the valuable item on his phone then you only have to scroll through the photos.

You might think I'm mad, but 'Asking the Pixies' has proven to work for myself, my husband and many doubting friends.
Tell him to stand quietly in an area where he last remembers having his watch. He can close his eyes if it helps, but he must say out loud and very clearly, "Dear Pixies. I have lost my watch. Please find it and return it to me. Thank you."

The lost item is then quite easily found, even somewhere you've looked before.
Well, anything is worth a try :)

I suspect that if they were forced to do this in a very public place that might help prevent future reoccurrencesGrin

LaPalmaLlama · 20/08/2024 14:48

I once hurriedly stuffed a load of Jewelry and cash at the bottom of the washing basket as we were having house viewings that day and I’d be out. I totally forgot I’d done it. A few weeks later Dh noticed and we assumed someone had stuck their hand through the window and stolen it all ( we lived in a basement flat). Only when we moved 6 months later did we find it, still under the shirt at the bottom of the washing basket that was still awaiting hand washing 🤣🤣

Heronatemygoldfish · 20/08/2024 14:49

I came on to say Tile and someone had beaten me to it. They are really really good. I have them on two sets of keys, my pocket camera and the binoculars. You can tell what I lose a lot, or need in a screaming hurry...

And if you press the button on a tile it will call your phone even if it's on mute!

Tell me how many people have been late for work cos they can't find their phone... 🖐

Heronatemygoldfish · 20/08/2024 14:50

(The binocs are because I'm a birdwatcher and often need to see what just landed on the feeders, before anyone wonders! )

Starlingexpress · 20/08/2024 14:53

I can’t get past the fact that he hid YOUR car keys!

FictionalCharacter · 20/08/2024 14:56

WE are looking? Stop helping him. It's his watch and he has mislaid it because of his stupid obsession.
And tell him not to touch your car keys.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/08/2024 14:56

I put something once into a box of tissues so the item slipped under the remaining tissues in the box. Entirely forgot about it until the tissues ran out.

My mum never found her beautiful eternity ring having stashed it somewhere in a hurry going on holiday. She got ill and has passed away now and we went through all her things with a fine tooth comb but never found it. So I've stopped emergency stashing.

TealPoet · 20/08/2024 14:58

Fridge/freezer,
in the middle of the toilet roll tube/holder
inside pillowcase
in a shoe in the wardrobe
in an ornament/vase/decorative teapot etc.
in the toilet cistern
in the piano if you have one

Bigstuffypillow · 20/08/2024 15:01

My DD once hid her car keys between 2 saucepans in the cupboard 🤷‍♀️

Sewsewsew · 20/08/2024 15:03

Nanny kept her valuables in an old saucepan at the back of the pan’s cupboard (or the cupboard of doom as what came out would never go back in without an almighty shove).

Thryty · 20/08/2024 15:03

Tell him, next time he hide something to take a pic on his phone and save it in a separate album so he knows where things are

shazshaz · 20/08/2024 15:03

My mum did this with some lovely jewellery of mine. She stashed it in a couple of pairs of old rolled up socks and didn't tell me. I went through my drawers having a spring clean and threw them in the bin .....

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2024 15:05

DMil hid her good rings in a casserole dish in her larder, but she had the sense to remember where they were and tell us.

DH is a hider ... often tells me where he's put something important before we go away, it's mostly a few specific places though on occasion we've had to wrack our brains. The best one, imo, was in DDs old dolls house, in the corner of what's now the box room covered in an old throw to keep the dust off.

I often email myself a clue about hidden things, but have to be careful I understand it 🤦‍♀️

Not your problem? Tell him to look up his arse.

Long term, I would suggest therapy. I know you've presented it in a light hearted way but this level of control and anxiety isn't healthy.

I came here to say this - my ex used to hide my keys too (in different places every day) and it escalated massively.

It's his stuff op, leave him to it.

HelenWheels · 20/08/2024 15:12

in a sock
in the drawer of doom
in a clock

notjaneausten · 20/08/2024 15:12

Might he have dementia?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/08/2024 15:13

Tiles/airtags are great for keys - not because we hide them but just that they're not always in a predictable place.

Apple Watch is great because its either on my wrist or charger and with it I can find my phone and AirTags

We've got a spare tag at the moment, I might suggest to DH he puts it with hidden stuff if he chooses an odd new hideyhole.
