Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

What's wrong with that? I do it too!

And me! I thought that was normal.

Well, unless you're planning on licking them, I don't see what the problem is.

Sigh.
You get the germs on your hands. You then rub your eyes, nose or other mucus membranes, or you eat something, brush your teeth etcetera. That's how the bacteria get in.
One study I saw found that 60% or hotel rooms harbour dangerous bacteria, including the dreaded MRSA.

So no, it isn't weird. It's smart, though I would just wipe it down with an antibacterial instead. I always do that in hotels. I wipe the surfaces in the bathroom, the remote, the phone, the doorknobs and the light switches. Those are the high risk spots. I also ask for a freshly laundered blanket and underpad because, although the sheets are clean, the blankets and underpads have usually not been washed in a month or more.

There are videos on IG of people who take a whole load of cleaning supplies to hotels and deep clean the room/bathroom. Bonkers behaviour, and I say that as someone who lives in a very clean house.

I don't do that, but I always take my own towel after I stayed in a Premier Inn for work. I checked out and then later on that evening realised that I had to stay another night. So I rang them and asked if I could have the same room.

When I had a shower the following morning, I realised that they had not changed my towel as it had the same mark on it as the previous day.

I wrote a complaint and they admitted that they hadn't changed it. They didn't even pretend that they had.

my ex's Nan would turn EVERYTHING off at the plug before she left the house or went to bed, everything except the fridge and freezer (because we trust them).
He lived with her for a while so he did it to, so when we house sat for my parents while they were away he unplugged the sky box so nothing recorded. They weren't best pleased!

Ha I did this the first holiday I went on with my husband when we first lived together. Turned everything off at the wall and unplugged it, so the flat didn't catch fire when we were on holiday. I think he was amused/bemused more than cross.

If you knew the facts on how full of bacteria (some of it dangerous) hotel rooms are, you would think otherwise.

Also why do the fires only happen at night and not when the oven is unattended all day while you are out at work?

I used to turn my oven off at the wall. I now don't, largely because I do use the clock and don't want to reset it every day. However, I do keep the microwave unplugged as we don't use it very often.

My electrical devices are all turned off unless I am using them (except Sky box and fridge). I’m not sure if power surges are more likely to happen at night than in the day, but you’re more likely to be asleep if a fire starts.

My grand mother during a thunder storm would close all the curtains, put all cutlery away, cover the mirror with towels and sit in the middle of the room. Not at the same time but my mother always peeled mushrooms. I’ve no idea why

Oh god my mother also peels mushrooms and briefly convinced my daughter this was a normal thing to do.

She also irons pants 🤷🏻‍♀️

I had hoped we’d moved on from regarding sex as something to be ashamed of 🙄

Well, that's the point I was trying to make, all be it badly. She was half my age (around 20 to my 40) and I really admired her confidence compared to the shame I'd been raised with.

I wasn't being sarcastic.

My sil doesn’t have a kitchen bin!!

Instead she has a carrier bag hooked over a cupboard handle, fills it and then takes it to the bin, why that’s preferable to having even a small bin is beyond me.

🤣 this took me right back. I think it's that having a bin, even if it is a small one takes up some space that if you've only got a small kitchen, you can't afford to lose so the bag on the handle makes sense😁

@JaneJeffer I've never seen anyone put milk in scrambled eggs, bit of salt and pepper and a good whisk is all you need.

Shock this is the most shocking thread I've ever read on MN! Milk and butter as @CharlotteStreetW1 says!

I think the squash idea is sensible! We used to make a jug of squash and leave in the fridge so people can just pour from it. Why is that weird? 😂

I use one of those big old fashioned lemonade jars in the fridge and fill it with diluted squash so it's always nice and cool. Also stops my DC from pouring too much squash, so I save money.

2xl corporation are a cleaning company. You don’t think they may have a vested interest in saying that?
Ive never wiped anything down in a hotel or holiday home, I use the kettles, I don’t always close the toilet lid. I’m also disgustingly healthy.

XChrome · 18/08/2024 21:13

Whothefuckdoesthat · 18/08/2024 18:37

Having worked as a chambermaid in the days when they were still called chambermaids and not Housekeeping staff, people are disgusting.

However, it’s the cups and glasses that would make me shudder to use them, not the kettle.

Oh hell yes. I always wash the glasses well with hot water. The boiling of the kettle will kill any germs in it. You just rinse it out thoroughly with hot water first and let it boil a few minutes before you make your tea.

This is ocd. Are you seeing anyone for this? I would highly recommend speaking to your doctor

Thankyou and yes i am

mrlistersgelfbride · 18/08/2024 21:15

I always remember my grandad put a small piece of wire in the top of the opening of washing up liquid so he could make sure he put only 3 drips in each to save on washing up liquid.

Even my dad who is massively petty and a penny pincher said it's not worth doing to save about £3 a year 😂

LesMisSaigon · 18/08/2024 21:15

We always had hot milk in Weetabix when I was a child. My DH thought that was batshit!

I pass scrambled egg mix through a sieve before cooking it so there’s no white flecky bits in the finished product. (bleurgh!) Been told by everyone this is very weird.

I'm sorry, redalex, it's using scrambled egg mix that's odd. Unless you're in a bunker, of course.

Whatineed · 18/08/2024 21:17

MattSmithsBowTie · 18/08/2024 18:24

I think it’s ok to do odd things like put a remote in a bag as long as you realise it’s a bit odd (does sleeping in the hotel bed not bother her?) it’s when people do odd things but don’t realise it, like a friend of mine won’t let you dry your hands on a tea towel, apparently they’re only for dishes, so you’re supposed to walk from the kitchen to the loo to wash your hands if you’re cooking 🙄

Don't most people have two tea towels on the go in the kitchen - one for hands and one for dishes?

Good for you. You have a robust immune system. Not everyone is so fortunate.

I thought that’s dangerous unless you stop the microwave.

They are literally designed to stop if you open the door. Do it all the time.
