Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

I don't see either as weird. I live alone so if I am doing something or in a situation where I prefer not to answer the door then I don't...and as @Gwenhwyfar says, if I don't know the number it will be spam or someone trying to get me to have a smart meter.

As Michael McIntyre says we trust the fridge

Well it's just that if you switch the fridge and freezer off your food will go bad so no choice really.

In addition to the reasons already given:
-better for pouring liquids down the sink while you are washing up (more relevant in the days when people didn't have separate half or second sinks).
-can reuse the water on the garden more easily.
-water stays hotter in a plastic bowl than in metal or enamel sink.

Loads of people still don't have a double sink!

I always remember my grandad put a small piece of wire in the top of the opening of washing up liquid so he could make sure he put only 3 drips in each to save on washing up liquid.

Even my dad who is massively petty and a penny pincher said it's not worth doing to save about £3 a year 😂

I'm lolling at this!

I have just realised that I must be very weird! I have never drunk ‘squash’. Obviously I know shops sell it 😂 but I didn’t realise quite so many people drink it until I read this thread. I probably drink too much tea to fit in another liquid!

It's for kids.
I now live in a country that doesn't even have squash.

I think it comes from the times when people had one tank of hot water to do for the whole day. They (like I do now, because I wash up in a kettle of hot water) didn't have limitless hot running water to wash dishes. Hot water was (is!) expensive, and washing dishes under running hot water is a luxury.

It is also handy for still being able to throw any dregs/leftover tea/water/juice etc down the side of the bowl if you have forgotten to do so before filling the sink with hot soapy water.
(We have another smaller sink so not important for us, but I washed up at my daughter's place recently and faced that issue).
I have always used a washing up bowl and it feels very odd not to!

Yes, I only have a single sink and can tip away dregs down the side if I need to. Usually I've thrown them outside on the garden (or given them to the dog to lick up, but don't tell some of the germphobics on here that my dog licks the plates before I wash up or I might be lynched or something).

I used to be a mushroom peeler, and still do if a wash doesn’t get all the dirt off.

Where are you all buying the mushrooms? The dirt is sanitised I think, wont do you any harm if you did ingest some. I eat them raw as well as cooked.

My mom used to peel them. I dont, I brush the minimal dirt off with my fingers.
You can buy a mushroom brush that looks a lot like a shaving brush for a couple of quid.

A broken fridge wasn't it? Not just one that was left on...

I have a friend who eats sandwiches with a knife and fork - at home, even when she’s made it herself. She also never buys the components of a salad and makes one herself, she buys tubs of prepared salad at least 3 times a week. Lastly, she doesn’t do a weekly shop but will only buy for the next 3-4 days so has 2 supermarket deliveries a week. She isn’t rural or a long way from the nearest supermarket, it’s less than 5 minutes walk from her house; nor does she have issues with storage such as no freezer, quite the opposite, it’s permanently almost empty.

It's really not weird not to do a weekly shop!
I'd think most single people just buy things on the way home from work or something.

Ti7ch · 25/08/2024 17:33

People who respond to almost every post on Facebook even to tell you "I'm not free that day sorry". I wasn't asking you!

I'm sure one of my friends only ever responds to tell me that. Even though it's not aimed at him.

It really isn't. Or retired people who don't have , or don't want to use, a car.

Yep.
Why would you go on a Saturday morning if you don't have to?
The only time I limited myself to (around) once a week was during lockdown when we were told to shop as seldom as possible.

SparrowFeet · 25/08/2024 18:52

Yes but the poster was talking about having two supermarket deliveries a week, not popping to the shops on the way home.

Why do you think single people don’t shop like other people? You mean when I’m buying my ready meal dinner-for-one?

I bake, cook food to share with friends and cook double so I can freeze half. I cook everything from scratch and eat lots of veg. Admittedly I top up with veg during the week but I definitely do a weekly shop!

That's fine, but lots of single people don't. We don't need to.

So what? The 'weird' thing seemed to be not doing a weekly shop. Also, buying ready-made salads, which obviously loads of people do or they wouldn't be in the shops.

SparrowFeet · 25/08/2024 21:16

@Gwenhwyfar I didn't read it like that. I read the weird thing as having more than one supermarket delivery a week, which I do find odd.. not least as normally you have to spend at least £40 qualify. I would have thought if you were getting it delivered you'd just do it once a week. So yes I agree with the poster that it is odd.
NOT doing a weekly shop isn't odd though I agree.

It’s not just for kids - mine (5 year old twins) don’t go near the stuff, preferring to drink only water or milk, but I drink at least a bottle a week filling my drinks bottle 2-3 times a day.

SparrowFeet · 25/08/2024 18:52

Exactly - it’s the twice weekly shopping delivery that makes it weird. Said friend doesn’t work, is married and lives minutes away from a large supermarket yet has 2 deliveries a week.

@Gwenhwyfar the comment about buying ready made salads, they work out much more expensive than buying the component parts and, once cut and mixed together, have a shelf life of no more than 1-2 days whereas, buying a lettuce, cucumber, tub of tomatoes, bunch of spring onions and bag of radishes, they last well over a week (although not in my house as I eat salad every day so go through loads).

I prefer not to have crunchy bits in my mushrooms if I didn't put them there.

Lots of things are more expensive than other options, but people prefer them. It's not really weird. It might be that if your friend buys the salad ingredients she ends up not feeling like chopping things up and eating something less healthy, whereas if she buys the ready-made salad she'll actually eat it. Her choice.
