Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

You know on a website when the pop up appears for cookies and you choose to accept all or reject? DM refuses to choose. She will continue looking at the website in the darkened background, around the pop up, no matter how big it is! Tutting while she does it, complaining is she can’t see it properly. Bonkers.

Hahaha! That's the sort of thing I'm talking about!

I have a millionaire friend who won't have white sheets as they show the dirt!

Georgyporky · 18/08/2024 17:42

I went on holiday with an ex-girlfriend once.
The last 2 days, the hotel room, bathroom & balcony were festooned with her washing - done by hand in the sink.
When I asked why, "It's saves having to wash things when I get home".
Err, throwing in a W.M. & walking away is hard work ?

Some people won’t use hotel kettles as apparently people piss in them or worse. Don’t know how true but it wouldn’t surprise me 😂

We used to have cabin crew at the hotel I worked 5 star one, they boiled pasta and eggs in the kettle so definitely wouldn't use them fir tea or coffee

tobee · 18/08/2024 17:43

Most of the things that people on Mumsnet do really.

You know, not letting grandparents within a 12 mile radius of their kids if they (the grandparents) have the sniffles or drank a sherry last week etc etc. Washing all the bedding, towels and crockery in holiday homes, quarantining their shopping for 48 hours during COVID. Then thinking this is all very normal, non neurotic behaviour

If a hotel kettle looks clean, it is clean. Boiling water kills anything nasty.

Yup. Can't say I've ever done that.

I saw a little girl with a big piece of snot on her nose today, her mum used her fingers to wipe it/pick it off THEN got a wipe from her bag to wipe her hands and the nose.

Even if they did wouldn't boiling water take care of that ? Still gross though

I wouldn't call that weird, it's well known that hotel remotes are often filthy. Many people either clean them or use covers

This. I think it's a good idea!

Differentstarts · 18/08/2024 17:55

I have to open and close door 7 times before I leave the house otherwise everyone I know will die

I know someone who dilutes squash and leaves in a spare bottle in the kitchen to be used because it ‘saves time’ ……
i have been known to cover the radio remote in the kitchen with a plastic bag to keep it clean but my daughter objected

What's the problem with pre diluting squash?

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/08/2024 17:57

My inlaws have no kitchen bin. Any rubbish, recycling or food waste has to be taken to the outside bin after every meal. This is out through a back boot room, across a patch of grass, and into one of the garages. At least 3 times a day every day.

That stems from people living in countries where you buy the meat from an open market. My husband used to do this all the time because that's how he was brought up.

Yep, I use them without a second thought but went away on a break with a friend once who remarked ‘’Eurgh, you don’t want to use the kettle, do you? Have you heard what people do in them?’’ 🤣

SmythSergio · 18/08/2024 17:59

I'm not a hygeine freak but I have put the remote in a bag before. It was a holiday apartment in Cardiff and the place was filthy. The remote was really grimey and I just couldn't bring myself to use it. I also cleaned the large balcony windows as they were filthy too and covered in greasy marks. I didn't want to spend a whole week thinking "yuck" every time I looked out of the window so it was well worth 20 mins of my time. I also washed the sheets as they were stained - and yes the stains came out in the wash

I wrote to the owner telling him I'd cleaned the windows and washed the sheets, hoping for at least an apology, he just thanked me 😄

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 18/08/2024 18:03

I used to pre-dilute squash and leave it in the fridge because my kids thought 50/50 squash to water ratios were reasonable and would go through a bottle in two days left to their own devices. They'd drink it made up all right though.
As for hotel remotes - does nobody wash their hands?
Sometimes I think people are so obsessed with germs that it must restrict their lives. Do they wear plastic gloves on public transport to avoid touching rails that might have been touched by someone who'd recently had a wank - or do they do the sensible thing of just washing their hands?
But then, I flush the loo with the seat up and have yet to catch anything (or even be ill as a result). I do wonder about people who complain about how 'rank' it is and how they always put the seat down. I don't go for a shit every time I sit on the loo, and refuse to worry about 'shit particles' flying around my bathroom!

Too many people don't.

goingtotown · 18/08/2024 18:06

My SIL sprays every hard service & handles with antibacterial cleaner.

nobodyisperfecto · 18/08/2024 18:06

A family member came into a very substantial amount of money, a long time ago yet he chooses to live in absolute squalor.
Will not spend a penny, rather like Ebenezeer Scrooge type of person.
His money of course, but if it it makes you so miserable, why not donate it or something?

This has never entered my head but I bet people do! I've got to stay in a travelodge next month, I'm now going to take my own kettle.

My sil doesn’t have a kitchen bin!!

Instead she has a carrier bag hooked over a cupboard handle, fills it and then takes it to the bin, why that’s preferable to having even a small bin is beyond me.

My mum switches the oven off at the wall - the big red switch that switches the electric supply to the oven.

In her defence, it relates to something from decades ago and she knows it’s superfluous, but she still does it.
