Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

It's not odd at all. It's not about the bacteria, it's about washing the grit and other stuff off it. Sorry but the better known types of cuisines do wash their meat and those that don't well you know them too. Those who think salt and pepper are seasoning.

Salt and pepper are in fact seasonings. Just not ALL the seasonings

What 'better known types of cuisine?'

I'm intrigued. What are better known cuisines?! And where are you buying meat that's full of grit? Gristle and boney bits yes, I chop them off but still, no need to wash. Washing meat is hazardous - think of all that invisible bacteria flying around when you're running it under the tap. Sure fire way to get very sick. Oh, and for reference, salt and pepper ARE seasonings, along with ras el hanout, cumin, tumeric....

Seconded. Very odd post.

Picking up roadkill carcasses? 😅

Game meat sometimes has to be cleaned of shot, but when I've done it, the method is by hand, feeling through the flesh for the shot pieces and picking them out.

True. Tis very difficult to find non - gritty road kill ..😂

Nope.

Our more distant ancestors also had immune systems.

Not 4 billion years ago they didn’t!!!

Who doesn't enjoy a roasted pheasant with a gravel crust?

I did once eat some pigeon in a very bad restaurant that had all sorts of small hard lumps in it. Memorable experience for all the wrong reasons.

Get up at 6am on holiday to reserve front row sunbeds. I’ve always found that utterly bonkers.

I pass scrambled egg mix through a sieve before cooking it so there’s no white flecky bits in the finished product. (bleurgh!) Been told by everyone this is very weird.

That is bloody genius! I hate the white stringy bits 🤮 and usually spend ages picking them out!

My inlaws have no kitchen bin. Any rubbish, recycling or food waste has to be taken to the outside bin after every meal. This is out through a back boot room, across a patch of grass, and into one of the garages. At least 3 times a day every day.

My dad's the same. He thinks kitchen bins are revolting. Makes me laugh because he's not exactly known for his household cleanliness at the best of times.

Newname71 · 24/08/2024 00:07

Changingplace · 18/08/2024 18:13

My sil doesn’t have a kitchen bin!!

Instead she has a carrier bag hooked over a cupboard handle, fills it and then takes it to the bin, why that’s preferable to having even a small bin is beyond me.

We do this too but only because our dog would insist on peeing up the bin!

maaarnie · 24/08/2024 01:44

Woah, I didn’t realise people were so germ phobic. Have not once in my life got into a hotel and cleaned anything, never even thought about the remote or the kettle. I’m completely healthy and can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve been ill. Surely germs are very important and exposure to them strengthens your immune system.

BathPoppadum · 24/08/2024 08:14

@maaarnie

Are you new to MN? 😅

"Germs" are everywhere and must be bleached, boiled, flame-throwered and anti-bacced(?) to within an inch of their lives..

I don't know how we all survive 😉

I do have a kitchen bin, but I often put the meaty food waste, and unwanted cat food straight in the outside bin, especially in summer, because it attracts flies and maggots.

Remember in Fawlty Towers, the weird guest Mr Hutchison (played by Bernard Cribbins), who refuses to use the telephone because of the risk of infection; and when he does use it, he says "your earpiece was very greasy, I've wiped it out for you"?

Otherwise, I am a firm believer in germs being good for one's immune system. I'm sure we didn't do our kids' immune systems any good by sterilising our environment in the 2020 panic, and not exposing them to the germs of other children; and I smile when I see the meme of hand sanitiser dripping on the floor, making holes in it, captioned "this is what we're putting on our kids' hands".

Mumsnet is full of people who think even touching a germ will lead to a terrible illness. And don't even think about sitting on your bed in your clothes!

I don’t either, and I’m disabled and chronically ill and by rights my immune system should be weak…

Why do people leave it until their medicines have run out before ordering new meds. Surely they can see they’re all their last strip of medicines, and think, ‘time to order new meds’.

Ah yes, I ask myself this about myself every.bastard.month.

We have a ridiculous ‘system’ whereby DW in role as carer gets my pills out for me and hands them to me… but I’m the one that phones to order them.

Can we effectively communicate between ourselves when they are running out? No.

After 26 years of over communication in the best lesbian tradition, we cannot get it together over something so fucking simple.

AndyandTerrysMum · 24/08/2024 09:31

Lincslady53 · 20/08/2024 07:25

This. We stayed in a hotel I'm Malorcs last year that was just refurbished so everything was brand new. The cleaner sterilised the kettle and cups everyday, but, they drank of the bleachy stuff she used, so although germ free, we had to rinse and boli a couple of kettles to get a brew we could drink.

You have reminded me of my mum- she “can’t drink tea in public places” because apparently it ALWAYS tastes of bleach.

She also can’t drink the last inch of tea in anyone else’s house, because that also tastes of bleach.

Just authorize her to order your meds, easy :)

Perhaps, perhaps not. Animals have had immune systems for longer than humans have been around, however.

Hotel remotes are the devil incarnate. To be avoided at all costs until cleansed thoroughly. Yuk!

Good God no! That would be the ideal way to spread bed bugs. Just no! Don't sit on your bed with outside clothes. This is basic stuff.

Where are you going outside where you think you’re picking up bedbugs on your clothes? 🤷‍♀️ what about your car seats, can you sit on them?
