Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

Yup. Can't say I've ever done that.

I wonder if those people try to wash mince meat too . 🤔

Ti7ch · 19/08/2024 14:47

Comment on everything even to inform someone "I have no idea what you're talking about"

PeonyBlushSuede · 19/08/2024 14:51

@Doggymummar "We used to have cabin crew at the hotel I worked 5 star one, they boiled pasta and eggs in the kettle so definitely wouldn't use them fir tea or coffee"

I will use a kettle in a hotel but I would always empty whatever water is in there first and refill - it's kind of unconsciously though. Not sure why I do it but habit!

PeonyBlushSuede · 19/08/2024 14:53

@ClaudineMallory "That stems from people living in countries where you buy the meat from an open market. My husband used to do this all the time because that's how he was brought up."

And i believe also still common in the US as they use Chlorine wash on meat (especially chicken) and their food standards are generally lower

Is it not just a messy fried egg if there is no milk added?

Is that not just omelette?

Amazon are an absolutely vile company, and I refuse to buy anything from them. I also have absolutely no need for an Alexa, and there's no way I'm having something in my house that snoops on every word I say, in order to sell me crap I don't need.

And you called other posters paranoid! 😂

Hubby and I have no tv in our household or business by choice, we hate them so in hotels, B&B's etc. we always cover the tv with a towel or something as we can't stand them ''watching'' us! Even though it's off and we've unplugged it, we know there isn't really anyone watching us, it still freaks us out!

Yikes…

Well, personally I'm amazed at how little people value privacy. I've suffered religious abuse that involved having all my privacy boundaries violated, so it's a hot button for me.

Can I ask why just the TV and not the internet? Do you listen to the radio at all?

I’m honestly just intrigued why TV media you dislike so much but yet internet not so much?

Washing raw meat. Very odd

It depends on how you're going to cook it, if making a clear soup, it reduces the scum you need to skim off. But I wouldn't bother for roasting, or frying.

mumedu · 19/08/2024 16:40

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 19/08/2024 13:04

I live alone, so it's two dishes max. And there's nothing left on the plates by the time they hit the water, so no. Plus they get a rinse in cold water before they go onto the rack to air dry (yes! I also air dry my dishes - it's a wonder I haven't already got typhoid and cholera!)

On a different note, why is it that most people don't rinse their dishes after hand washing in soapy water? Doesn't this leave a residue of soapy, dirty water on your dishes? Asking for a friend.

MidnightMeltdown · 19/08/2024 16:45

Flu and cold viruses survive on hard surfaces for 24 to 48 hours, some say longer - up to 3 days.

@floatingislands 'Survive' yes, but that's not the same as having the ability to infect. This usually deteriorates very quickly on hard surfaces.

I am the proud owner of a DH who every single morning takes a clean cloth, folds it and places it underneath the spout of our espresso machine to catch any post-coffee making drips. I have explained repeatedly that he is preventing the drip tray from fulfilling its life’s purpose and irritating the fuck out of me, but to no avail.

I have only one question for you: how good are your patio re-laying skills?

I once got an absolute bollocking in a Home Economics lesson in the 1980s for doing this. The teacher went absolutely bananas and screeched 'would you dry your hands on tea towel at home, I don't think so!'
I thought 'well err yes I would!'

That wasn't 5' 1" in 4 inch heels Molloy, by any chance?

redtrain123 · 19/08/2024 18:18

MangoMadness999 · 19/08/2024 12:46

Are you not just washing dishes in dirty water then?

You rinse it under the tap at the end, once you’ve changed the plates and got the food off.

Mrsredlipstick · 19/08/2024 18:54

I had been married 11 years before my DH allowed a dishwasher in the house.
He would spend up to an hour washing dishes, rinsing them then covering with a tea towel. I'm still not allowed to put stainless steel pans in the dishwasher as they smear! I wait until he's out and load the buggers up! 😄

thefamous5 · 19/08/2024 19:12

I don't wash fruit and veg unless it's visibly dirty.

Never cleaned a hotel room on entering.

Don't have a kitchen bin.

Don't turn off stuff at sockets

I do sometimes make up squash in the summer to save the kids using gallons of it.

Sometimes flush with the lid open (although tbf my toilet is in seperate room to sink)

Use hotel kettles

Don't always wash my hands when coming in (always after loo and before making food though)

Ironically, I have (diagnosed) severe OCD

StMarieforme · 19/08/2024 19:31

I've never given hotel remotes or carpets a second thought and am fit and healthy lol. I suppose it's all relative to whatever else you have going on 🤷🏻‍♀️

I really don't understand the thought behind so much stuff but I am neuro diverse and find so much confusing :-/

Recreational drug use- the exploitation involved in the supply of drugs and the horrific effect on your health.

Attending diet clubs run by overweight people - to be weighed in public and advised by someone clearly not following the instructions.

Those who post cryptic attention seeking posts about their love life who are over the age of 15, despairing one day and devoting their life to him the next.

People who get absorbed by anger and seek revenge, I am very much cut people off and then I am done.

Reading the same book twice - but I can watch a film over and over

Watching sports but not training / competing yourself,

Every Slimming World group I've ever attended has been run by someone who WAS overweight and no longer is. With a photo display to prove it. Betty Oldknow, who ran a group in Derbys for (iirc) over 40 years kept her weight off right through having lost it with SW in the first place.

Thepeopleversuswork · 19/08/2024 06:52

@XChrome

if I had to guess, it might be due to pollen allergies in the household. The pollen gets on the clothes and it gets spread around the house.

Its not that it’s germ phobia. But utterly ridiculous because there are so many millions of microbes around you at any given time and no such thing as a sterile environment. So making people change into “indoor” clothes is a total waste of time.

That notion that it makes no difference is based on an incorrect understanding. Reducing the total load of pollen exposure makes a difference to people with allergies. Reducing the number of harmful bacteria makes the chances of infection lower. Of course the environment is never sterile and it shouldn't be, because many microbes are actually healthy. The ideal is to expose yourself to those while at the same time reducing your risk to the dangerous ones. It's a balancing act. Gardening helps, because there are soil microbes which are beneficial. Walks in the woods are helpful as well, because the air will be full of beneficial bacteria. That doesn't mean you should heedlessly rush headlong into poison ivy. That's an example of the balance.

I've always assumed this was down to laziness. Dishes should be rinsed off. Anyone who doesn't is just a bit scummy really.

catswithbowties · 19/08/2024 14:04

Omg!! Glad I read up to here at least because I was going to post that. I know a few people who say it's disgusting not to change out of "outside clothes" before sitting on the bed, sofa etc. Presumably they don't also have a full shower and hair wash to get rid of "outside"...? So why is it just clothes that are the problem?? I only change because I've gotten into trackies or sometimes just pants...

I imagine they have very dull lives and a lot of spare time. I go out several times a day, if I were to change my clothes every time before sitting on the furniture I would get little else done.

Never in real life have I met anyone who is so obsessive about germs, hygiene, "nasties" as seem to be on MN. It's a magnet for oddballs.

Once again I don't know anyone who rinses their dishes after washing them, I'm not in the UK and it's not something people do here (we also don't use those weird washing up bowls). No, there is no residue of soapy, dirty water on our dishes. If plates are particularly dirty they are rinsed in running water before being washed - I've never seen anyone washing in "dirty" water!

Some people won’t use hotel kettles as apparently people piss in them or worse. Don’t know how true but it wouldn’t surprise me 😂

Surely it's more effort to do that than just going to the loo?

Yes, but they supposedly do it because they find it a hilarious prank, rather than purely because they need to relieve themselves. People find some very childish things funny.
