Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

Are you me? Amazon is vile. I don't buy anything from them.

Yup, I haven't touched them for years. When my mother in law gave me a £100 Amazon gift card a few years ago, I returned it to her.

I agree with @BernardBlacksBreakfastWine - it's fine for people to have different preferences, but I find it odd that people are so outraged about, for example, remote controls but can't see that in fact, the rest of us are NOT falling over dying every 5 seconds.

I also use tea towels for hand drying and plates (well, we don't dry up a lot, but if we do) but I'm a bit obsessive about washing them. No tea towel is used in my house for more than about a day. Similarly, dish clothes for wiping surfaces are left to soak overnight in bleach every night and rinsed the next day and washed at least every few days (i'd wash more often but I like to put them in a hot cycle with towels).

My aunt covers her TV every night before she goes to bed with a large lace cloth.
Not even to hide the TV presumably as it's visible in the daytime. Just at night. Like it's a caged parrot or something.

I might start doing this. Not lace though. Maybe something in a nice crushed velvet 😂

Seriously?!?

They treat their staff like absolute dirt, make astronomical profits but pay virtually no tax, sell absolute junk, drive decent businesses under, snoop on you and sell on your data for huge profits, deliberately manipulate customers to make them buy more... that's just off the top of my head.

Amazon pay minimal tax if any and are not known for treating their employees well

but most of us shall over look this for cheap goods

My late PIL had a cover for their video recorder which they put on it every night.

Have you been hiding under a rock? This has been plain to see for decades. Amazon are about the least ethical company on the planet.

Re Amazon, it's true that they have a reputation for not always treating their staff well and for getting aroudn tax but... this is a bit more nuanced in real life.

  • For a a start, they are a massive employer with a lot of people who would not have jobs being able to work as a result of workign for amazon. And of course, that also benefits the overall tax revenues for the countries in which these people work.
  • They also facilitate some small businesses who could not otherwise reach a broader market (do they always do this in a warm, fuzzy way - no. But then if you're a small business in Devon, I guess your choice is to stick with local only or take the hit for the benefit of reaching a much wider audience).
  • Corporate tax loopholes are legal - HMRC and other tax authorities are the ones who need to figure out how to close these.
  • Amazon also has all kind of benefits for people who struggle otherwise in terms of accessibility of goods and speed of service.
  • Amazon does not sell personal information. There are times when general information is shared, but they're not in the business of selling personal data to make money. Also, this sort of data is collected by everyone, everywhere so it's a bit silly to get worked up about Amazon. I can't even bloody order a drink at my local restaurant without providing an email address these days.

Easy tiger. That poster asked a question, took what you said on board and said they’d change their shopping habits to be in line with yours. No need to then go at them with ‘have you been hiding under a rock’…

Still won't touch them, and I also refuse to deal with any business that insists on me providing an email address.

People who follow what's in fashion/ trendy and copy it

I wear clothes I like with no idea what's trending and I don't redecorate my house every season because blue was in fashion but now it's grey

IdLikeToBeAFraser · 19/08/2024 13:39

OP - sure, you have every right to shop wherever you like (or not) - I have my reasons but I do not ever shop in Clarkes, for example.

I'm just pointing out that the generic "Amazin is evil" thing is a bit more complex to people who have asked on this thread.

I used to know a woman who'd rip out and install a new kitchen every three years. EVERY THREE YEARS! My last kitchen was in for thirty...

It was a lesson to me that, just because you can afford to do something, it doesn't mean you should.

I have a human tea towel and a cat tea towel that is specifically used for drying cat dishes. Not sure if that's weird or not, but I don't like the idea of drying my hands or dishes on the cat dish tea towel and it freaks me out if I catch guests using it!

Our cats have their own washing up sponges and their dishes get washed separately. They are not offended by this as far as I know 😉

This has never entered my head but I bet people do! I've got to stay in a travelodge next month, I'm now going to take my own kettle.

Or, just fill it up, boil it, then discard the water after. Wash it with some soap first of you must. Voila, clean kettle.

No, they're not. They're just everyday objects.

A large pile of shit is disgusting. A remote control is just a small lump of plastic.

One of the weirdest things I have ever come across on here is this crazy business of people insisting that everyone takes off “outdoor clothes” before sitting on a bed.

I thought this was a windup until I realised so many people do it. Absolutely crackers.

Omg!! Glad I read up to here at least because I was going to post that. I know a few people who say it's disgusting not to change out of "outside clothes" before sitting on the bed, sofa etc. Presumably they don't also have a full shower and hair wash to get rid of "outside"...? So why is it just clothes that are the problem?? I only change because I've gotten into trackies or sometimes just pants...

what I can't get my head aroudn with this is the sheer EFFORT and disruption? We did our kitchen ONCE and frankly, I'll avoid any similar disruption as much as possible forever. DH and I often discuss that if we win th elottery, ideally we'll buy a house that is already pretty much perfect because neither of us can face the effort of having to do the work!

That's one of the reasons why I live in a new build. It needs no work.

Hubby and I have no tv in our household or business by choice, we hate them so in hotels, B&B's etc. we always cover the tv with a towel or something as we can't stand them ''watching'' us! Even though it's off and we've unplugged it, we know there isn't really anyone watching us, it still freaks us out!
