Really weird stuff people do that makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Someone I know puts hotel TV remotes in plastic bags before using them, because she once heard a standup comedian talking about men wanking on them while watching porn.

WTAF?

What weird things do people you know do that make absolutely no sense at all? Anything as odd as that?

Nope - it’s paranoia. There are germs everywhere - public toilets, buses, trains, offices, supermarkets, everywhere. There are even billions of them inside me. I get there is a theoretical risk but honestly it’s a waste of brain waves to even contemplate this sort of thing.

"X exists in abundance, therefore X is not something one should be taking precautions about" is a fallacy. You could make the same argument about any risk. For example; "Crime on the streets of St. Louis, Missouri is rampant. Therefore I will not worry about it and will stroll down the worst streets at two in the morning, heedless to any danger, and take no precautions at all and you're just paranoid if you won't do that."
Put that way, doesn't it sound silly?

Paranoia is a mental health condition involving a false sense of persecution. It is not fear of germs. That, if it is indeed unreasonable, out of proportion fear, would be a phobia.
I have supplied facts which fully support that it is not unreasonable to fear potentially harmful bacteria and viruses in hotels.

Not me but my grandfather. He used to boil his vegetables for dinner then transfer the vegetable water to the kettle for his tea “so he didn’t loose any nutrients”. Idiot. Most of the nutrients are water soluble so they have no nutritional value anyway 😂

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 18/08/2024 23:58

I don't eat fish anymore, but I used to pull out the little round black bits in cans of tuna, because I thought that they were the tuna's eyes. I didn't realise how big tuna actually are 😳

MrsClatterbuck · 19/08/2024 00:01

In our domestic science class we were not allowed to dry saucepans with the tea towel but use the dish cloth!! I used a tea towel to dry a saucepan one day and got caught by the teacher and made to feel like I was some sort of a dirty hallion. That was more than fifty years ago and I take great pleasure today drying any saucepans with a tea towel which doesn't happen very often due to the dishwasher

It’s been a while since I ate meat or fish but - what little round black bits? I’m sure when I last had tuna it didn’t have those….

Pineappleprep · 18/08/2024 17:16

I wouldn't call that weird, it's well known that hotel remotes are often filthy. Many people either clean them or use covers

Not in my world (you nutter)

I think it was just oxidative browning, but it was like very small roundish bits that I thought were eyes 🤣. It's been 8 years since I've been vegan, and like I mentioned, I didn't realise how big they actually are. I always thought they were very small fish. How embarrassing 🤫

I have to finish my book each night on an even number, have the volume on the car radio on an even number and have the light switches facing down where there are two-way systems.
Surely someone else has a numbers thing 🤞😲😂😵‍💫?

I do but it's odd numbers for me Grin

I have hated scambled eggs all my life - until I made my own which were delicious. Why - because I DIDN'T add milk. Everyone else seems to, and it ruins them for me.

Is it not just a messy fried egg if there is no milk added?

Are we related? Me and my DM are the only mushroom peelers I have ever met!

I didn’t know it was possible to peel a mushroom.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 19/08/2024 00:38

Twototwo15 · 19/08/2024 00:35

I didn’t know it was possible to peel a mushroom.

My mum peeled mushrooms. She'd start off by removing the stem, and then under the head of the mushroom there would be loose skin that you could pull up to the top of the mushroom. I did this into my early twenties and then thought sod this.

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 19/08/2024 00:42

She used to put a little X in the stem of each brussel sprout too. Wtf? 😂

redalex261 · 19/08/2024 00:55

@Bodeganights and @HarlanPepper I mix the eggs, spot of milk, seasoning and whisk vigorously - then sieve into a buttered pan. Cooked eggs are smooth and delicious without vile white bits. Sieve contains unincorporated jellied albumen from egg white that is never totally whisked in. I can’t eat scambled egg without doing this. It must be really weird - been quoted and questioned on this thread multiple times! 😁😁

XChrome · 18/08/2024 22:58

Indeed I do. I'm immunocompromised. Hence my precautions.
Why you have a problem with that I do not understand. I never suggested everyone should do it. It's just what I do. The thread is about seemingly weird things people do, is it not?

Your personal experience is not the sum total of all experience on the planet. But yes, hospitals and care homes absolutely are the worst places for picking up MRSA, among other things. So I'm not surprised at all.

Being immunocompromised is not the reality for most people, so why are you bothering to argue with people who aren't about what they should or shouldn't do.

Now that really is weird!

Incidentally, your personal experience is not the sum total of all experience either so there is no need to act superior.

No, it's nothing like fried egg. It's all in the length of time you cook it and how you cook it.

Can't believe I am posting this at 1.20 am but mushroom peeling is something I find quite satisfying. Seriously. Flip out the stalk then the loose skin peels off perfectly. I haven't bought mushrooms for ages but think I shall have a mushroom omelette tomorrow.

🙂🍄

I also have a numbers thing but it's a bit too complicated to explain at this hour and I'm tired 😴

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 19/08/2024 01:27

@AuntieMaud it is very satisfying tbf, but also absolutely time consuming. I decided to just rinse them 😂

InkyPinkyPonky24 · 19/08/2024 01:27

My mum would always iron pants. She would also iron pillowcases and then fold it in half and iron again so it has a line and then fold it into quarters and do it again. The end result being an ironed cross shape on the pillow 🤔

ILoveToCleanSaidNooneEver · 19/08/2024 01:28

@InkyPinkyPonky24 🤣🤣

Louise303 · 19/08/2024 01:47

I always dettol wipe the remote in hotels and use the dettol spray on the door handles and light switches. I think i did it when my son was very ill after a trip but I think it was something he caught on the plane 11 hour flight. I was very nervous during lockdown thankfully neither me my hubby or children got it. Lots of family members did more than once and I was a little over the top. My adult son worked in retail lots of customers I made him take his shoes off and wash his hands straight away when he came home. I also did use wipes on food items delivered even the carrier bags I do not do this now.

dadtired · 19/08/2024 01:59

I rinse dishes and give them a quick scrub before putting them in the dishwasher, which seems perfectly sensible to me, but my DW and MIL think I'm odd.

I'm not am I?

Well, we all know how many hours it takes to make a glass of squash! 😂

Well you either store water in the fridge or you store squash mixed with water in the fridge (if you like cold drinks which I do as warm squash is repulsive).

It makes sense to make up a jug of squash and then it's cold and ready to go when you fancy it.

DiscoBeat · 19/08/2024 02:22

theywenttoseainasievetheydid · 18/08/2024 17:21

I know someone who dilutes squash and leaves in a spare bottle in the kitchen to be used because it ‘saves time’ ……
i have been known to cover the radio remote in the kitchen with a plastic bag to keep it clean but my daughter objected

I used to do that for my Dad so he had cold squash with filtered water ready to go in the fridge.
