This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

Can someone explain to me what Labour have done that reveals them to be "far left" in the six weeks that they've been in government? (Note that "harsh sentences for violent criminals" is not generally considered far left, even if the government did have influence over individual sentencing decisions, which they don't.)

Censoring free speech is very far left. This is what communism used to do and Putin stil does about the war in Ukraine when it comes to his citizens. Wake up. This is not normal

@Clarabella77 that's literally what she's doing.

The only saving grace is that they're almost certain to be a one-term government.

In fact I doubt they'll even last that long - I can see Sir Starmer being forced into a snap election in a couple of years time.

By what mechanism? The majority is so big you'd have to have an awful lot of labour MPs voting for it. And why would they? In any situation where it was all going badly, they'd be turkeys voting for Christmas.

People seem to be losing their minds.

The private school tax policy was in the manifesto, was openly discussed and having won the election, Labour will be implementing it.

Unlike the two-child benefit cap or the endlessly punitive benefit sanctions under the last government , no-one is going to be sent into poverty because of it.

As to those who think there's going to be some revolution, don't make me laugh. Most of us are quite happy to see people openly inciting racial hatred going off to jail and certainly aren't going to the barricades in defence of private school parents horrified that their kids might have to go the same schools as the vast majority!!

You might think it’s funny, but one of the problems is that parents have been contacting their LEAs about state school places and being told that there are no spaces in their local schools or that they are receiving such a large number of applications, that it will be weeks before they can get back to parents. Don’t you think that Bridget Phillipson should engage with these concerned parents? I mean, she is the education secretary after all!

I guess it's up to us and how passive we choose to be. I bitterly regret my vote and won't be passive if I have a chance to speak up now

You regret your vote because the Telegraph, who oppose everything Labour ever does, has written an article about a Labour politician removing some posts on FB?

I genuinely don't see what the issue is.

If you're opposed to VAT on school fees you can tell everyone, you haven't been censored.

“Social media being used for PR” shock.

Grow up. ‘Government censorship’ 😃

Agreed! This post is like Rik from the Young Ones. Its a fascist state!!

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 21:09

Dibbly my MP is Braverman.

Literally no other MP or anything any other MP does on FB - or rather just does and says - will shock me.

I have the woman who stokes devision and hate through just breathing.

Sadly she hasn't gone. But she lost a HUGE majority and then went very quiet when the riots were on.

She can stay quiet for all I care. Nasty woman she is.

This thread is not about VAT on private schools! Don't make it about this. I'm a labour voter! But I'm not pro censorship and I am scared of it. I don't want it! It's wrong!!

I hope so. I feel betrayed and so scared

Completely mad. This whole thread is absolute gold.

I already thought Labour had the makings of a solid multi-term government but the comments on here (and that I've seen elsewhere on social media) have convinced me.

If this is the standard of the objections - the very best objections they can come up with! - then it shows their opponents have nothing, absolutely nothing.

Keir Starmer is just a younger version of Jeremy Corbin. He’s extremely dangerous.
😂😂😂😂😂

It isn't censorship, you still have free speech.

You can still post whatever you like on your SM. You can start a campaign, write to the press, start a petition, stick up posters etc etc.

You are talking about it right now!

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 21:12

She is t censoring free speech though.

Anyone is free to comment about the VAT on private schools wherever they like. They can even email her about it.

But people can choose what's on their own SM.

Arrivapercy · 17/08/2024 21:12

Most people i know (labour voters) are happy with the changes being made.

I have no issues with vat on private school fees, and am happy to see public sector workers getting long overdue payrises. Plus the bill nationalising railway passenger service franchises when the contracts end - good. This is what we all voted for.

You'll be pleased that Labour has commited to protecting your free speech rights under the ECHR then!

rayofsunshine86 · 17/08/2024 21:13

Comments that are repeatedly reported get removed automatically, but I'm guessing these are deleted by administrators.

It's wild what's happened in the past month. A man near me was given a 2 year suspended sentence for drink driving and causing life altering injuries, but a bloke who posted something on Facebook got almost 3 years.

Absolutely ridiculous.

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 21:13

Ha berga great minds 😂

OonaStubbs · 17/08/2024 21:14

All governments want to "control the narrative". Labour are no different than the Tories in this regard at least.

Thanks for the response. So, given that they're not censoring free speech, have you got anything else?

Arrivapercy · 17/08/2024 21:14

Its not censorship. Are you mad? Censorship would be introducing legislation that prevented you discussing it in public forum, or forcing mumsnet & the like to block discussion of it.

Refusing to allow your own social media page to be flooded by those opposing your policies is not censorship.

I don’t even know where to start with this …

DragonFly98 · 17/08/2024 21:15

NAndJIsLockingDown · 17/08/2024 20:35

No - there will likely be civil unrest due to rampant inflation, tax rises, and the curtailment of free speech and women's rights, which will force them to call a snap election.

Haha yes ok. Honestly you are just pissed of because you have to put your hand in your very deep pockets more than you usually do.

ela i mean censoring free speech is also a pretty standard extreme right-wing play. I think we’re better off just calling censorship authoritarian and deeply undemocratic tbh. I don’t personally reckon Starmer’s lot are anywhere near far left, everyone’s entitled to their own perspective/political compass tho. What I do think is that delivering comms either via social platforms like Meta/Twitter or via trad media conglomerates like the Murdoch group or whatever he calls it now are indicative of our wider, global (but hyper focussed in the West) issue that (and sorry if I sound a bit Young Ones here) - it’s less about traditional notions of right/left and more about how much big business/capital/conglomerations/Tesla owning billionaires are able to exert pressure to mould the centre. IMO anyway.

Also sorry but the notion that Putin is in any way far left is nonsensical.

Anonymous54 · 17/08/2024 21:15

Get real! Even local councillors do this sort of thing. I don’t particularly approve either but it’s quite a stretch to then claim
this government is worse than the bloody Tories, who have left the country is the worst state since the 1940’s!
Female politicians get horribly trolled and are under significant threat, countering this on social media in this light is forgivable, if it’s even true. You don’t imagine that the Telegraph of all papers might have another agenda?
You all have very short memories !

Nadeed · 17/08/2024 21:17

Someone deleted my comments off a facebook page!! Call the wambulance!!

CeruleanBelt · 17/08/2024 21:17

The Education Secretary’s official Facebook profile routinely removes statements that question Labour’s controversial private school tax raid, parents and teachers have alleged.

"Tax raid".

Seems like a good, unbiased article 🤔 It's not a tax raid, its just asking the most privileged people to pay their fair share on their luxury services. What's wrong with that?

Merryoldgoat · 17/08/2024 21:17

I’m honestly starting to despair - it’s like idiot hour every fucking hour.

Censorship?? You can still have your say, anyone can say what they like on their own SM channel, newspapers can write what they like.

This is the same as me deleting the daft comments from people on my business Facebook who are talking bollocks or distracting from any genuine message.
