To feel so upset about the government censorship?

This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

There is no freedom of speech issue here. There is no issue of censorship here. None.

The most one could say is that it’s poor form for a government minister who runs a Facebook account - presumably with a view to promoting herself and her policies - to manage the account so that opposing views are removed.

I’ve no doubt that if, say, a Tory minister arguing for Brexit or for benefit cuts or for stronger union legislation on his/her Facebook account had done this, a lot of Labour and Lib supporters would have been on here taking issue with it.

But they’d have been wrong and the private school enthusiasts are wrong now. And it’s making the parents look pathetic.

God knows why Phillipson or any other minister would have a Facebook account anyway. It looks so desperate.

Irrelevant side-comment. You don’t see a lot of Bridgets around these days, do you?

Except they do do it.

Lots of people do it and have done it.

The problem here isn't that it's done.

The problem here is a group of people who have homes into this one issue and have banded together to attack it from all angles and when they are told to go through proper channels they claim they are being attacked.

I have to confess I find Labour vaguely amusing. In their first two months (not even) they’ve managed;

A) To upset a huge swathe of the population (‘silent majority’) through their actions on pensions after thinking that it would be a solid policy their support base would be pleased with
B) To upset working class people by effectively telling them that you get a heavier prison sentence than you do for rape (multiple instances of sentences handed out over the last few weeks being longer than some rape cases, even when there is DNA evidence). And failed to acknowledge some fairly legitimate concerns - anyone who has worked in Central Europe would recognise these concerns as valid. There’s a reason why ‘front-line’ countries like Poland, Czechia etc are so opposed to mass immigration.
C) To upset the Israelis by retracting objections to arrest warrant against Netanyahu, and then having the balls to ask for a meeting between him and Lamar and being surprised when he won’t.
D) To wear ‘hostage’ badges in a meeting with the Israelis but then not with Hamas (you know…the ones who have the hostages).
E) Give doctors a huge pay rise and almost certainly capitulate to ASLEF. Neither of which we can afford. Also likely scrap TUA which is just going to mean strikes, strikes and more strikes.
F) Announce (via multiple Ministers) support for WFH despite clear links between slow down of economic growth and WFH.
G) Failed to actually do anything of substance on what is happening in Bangladesh.

Regardless of political views, I don’t think anyone can say Labour haven’t colossally fucked up here. On one hand, I find it incredibly amusing and yet on the other, also quite concerning because we have another four years of this.

'Free speech' isn't serving this pressure group well because it seems like they're not getting the answers they want to hear

Absolutely.

Being denied free speech is often code for

"I'm not getting my own way"

It's like a toddler tantrum on SM 😂

CurlewKate · 19/08/2024 07:03

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone That's an interesting selection of government actions. What made you choose them in particular?

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone That's an interesting selection of government actions. What made you choose them in particular?

Because they tell me a lot about this Government and their future trajectory.

It’s a lack of understanding of how the UK public view things (pensions, ASLEF, doctors, immigration), a lack of understanding and forsight to recognise their actions have consequences (hostages and Netanyahu). A lack of understanding and interest in persecuted groups (Hindus in Bangladesh) because their ‘core voter base’ isn’t interested in it. And a basic lack of understanding about the economic trajectory that WFH has caused.

Any political party will make policy decisions based on their core base. BUT they usually wait a tad longer because they start demonstrating their disregard for anyone who isn’t their voter base.

CurlewKate · 19/08/2024 07:27

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone You are aware of Stephen Yaxley-Lennon's involvement in Bangladesh, aren't you?

Tandora · 19/08/2024 07:33

Efacsen · 18/08/2024 20:54

Of course government ministers manage their SM accounts in their own interests - why wouldn't they?

The denial that this is the case is fascinating

no one is denying this is the case , they are saying it’s outrageous! Its ok to want higher moral standards from our elected politicians- that used to be a thing to aspire for you know.

So the UK Govt. shouldn’t call out the rape, murder and displacement of Hindus because of him? That’s weak.

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone F) Announce (via multiple Ministers) support for WFH despite clear links between slow down of economic growth and WFH.

Which reputable source links working from home to a slow down in economic growth?

curious79 · 19/08/2024 07:53

Anyone who is at all interested in health already knows this is happening. The censorship of anything questioning the covid vaccine narrative was horrendous, and yet now we see Pfizer on the stands in court, having lied about trial data. The HPV vaccine is associated with horrendous side effects - there are class actions in the US chasing after Merck, and Merck have already been fined many millions - yet HPV vaccine critical articles that DID exist have now completely disappeared from papers like The Guardian. You will struggle to find information on alternative approaches to healing cancer - one well known therapy devised in the 1930s can’t even be mentioned on YouTube. At least you can still slag off Labour and their stupid politics of envy policy on Mumsnet

I mean it’s quite obvious if you commute into London. Lots of shops closing. Lots of empty places that used to be packed. If people aren’t spending money in these shops and aren’t going out at lunch (which most aren’t) and spending logically and they’re not spending money on transport into the office then economic growth slowing is quite obvious

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 19/08/2024 07:57

Catching up this morning.
Seems to me that the problem is a bunch of people not getting the answer ok, we will not add Vat to private school fees getting a bit pissed off.
Also just for the parents themselves, you still actually do have time to give the school a term's notice if you can't afford it.
Even in Scotland where the kids are already back, well the new government got in in July so plenty of time.
On that FB page, how does anybody know it is real anyway?

CurlewKate · 19/08/2024 07:59

@Killingoffmyflowersonebyone "

The UK government needs to be careful, like all of us, of being taken in by fake news. There are plenty of countries where there is unequivocal persecution of minorities. It is ...interesting...that you chose Bangladesh in particular to highlight.

That doesn't upset working class people, most of whom are delighted not to have rioting on their streets. It upsets people who want to go out and attack and intimidate people they deem to be the wrong race.

Given I work in international policy, I can assure you it’s not fake news. What is happening is deplorable and this government has barely said a word.

Is it one that will cause active harm if followed? Frankly, I can hardly move on my SM for quack remedies and conspiracies-free speech seems alive and well to me.

So no link at all, just wild assumptions.

There is actual data from the early periods of the pandemic which saw reductions in the type of small spends you describe in the centre of cities with correlating increases in spending and economic growth in local highstreets - money was spent closer to home. No idea if the ONS continued to capture that set of figures post pandemic.

So the money moved at that time but didn't disappear.

That's the extent of your economic study?

Shops are closing because so many people are buying online, because fuel costs went up so drastically, and because High Street landlords are still unrealistic about rents. If people WFH are no longer going to restaurants and sandwich bars near their offices, they are buying more in shops and restaurants near to their homes. People aren't driving into London so much because of fuel costs, congestion charges and ULEZ, and their use of subsidised transport doesn't contribute to economic growth.

Our old Tory MP never answered letters at all. That, along with the fact that he was not local, did nothing and didn't even show up before the election, was probably why he managed to lose the incredibly safe seat he was parachuted into. Consequences.

This is part of the problem. The gov have just announced the policy will take effect from January. Private schools require a terms notice to leave. For those children whose family rely on bursaries or perhaps are on affordability edge, its not giving them much time. During the election labour said the policy would be implemented from next school year not mid school year.

At least it was in their manifesto. Sometimes people complain about governments not sticking to the manifesto!
