This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

"But it is not just the families who use private schools will be affected, it’s the whole ecosystem that the private school help prop in their local area and and the people that they employ that will feel the brunt of it"

Is this a joke?

Why would it be a joke? How do you think private schools can cut costs? What is there biggest cost?

I don't have kids at private schools and was neutral on the VAT matter but yes, I see what the poster means - obviously they have dinner ladies, swimming pool assistants, cleaners, porters, bus drivers etc.
.these jobs would go if a school closes and I imagine they would all be local people

I didn’t vote for Labour, never have. I am at heart a capitalist. But I don’t believe the poll on here, Mumsnet is too leftist for this to be a true reflection.
although, having said that I did say to DM I wondered if Labour had lost some of it’s traditional voters from the stance they took over the riots this summer. Maybe they have. It would make sense.

Yougov shows 97% of Labour voters didn't support disorder.

Even amongst Reform voters only 7% thought disorder was justified.

Weird that, the vast majority of people thinking attacking the police and trying to burn down hotels and kicking the shit out of anyone not white is wrong....who'd a thought it....

How is the Government going to fund all these extra state school places that are suddenly required for pupils that have to leave private schools?

We are obviously entering a different topic but do you really believe that many people questioned by yougov would say "yes, I support the riots"
..? They would never admit to it

I bow to nobody in my disdain for Labour politics…

…but this thread is fucking nuts.

Some minister removed some comments from her Facebook page? You think that’s a blow to free speech? Nobody has an inalienable right to post on someone’s Facebook page. That is comical.

This relentless anti-VAT campaign is doing your cause harm. It was always a bit tedious, but now it’s completely absurd.

Thanks for that, it bears out what I said!

kirbykirby · 17/08/2024 23:49

So VAT on private school places will need to fund extra state school places for all those pupils who have to leave private schools due to VAT on private school places.

Surely all the extra funding for every new state school pupil will be more than the extra VAT they receive.

How can they be sure it won't cost more as people adapt and change their behaviour (by moving their kids to state school- depriving the Government of VAT whilst adding to the burden of state school pupil funding)?

I'm not sure it will work out quite as Labour imagine.

Weirdly most people don't support attacking police and bricking mosques. IF you believe there’s this revolutionary undercurrent in the UK that thinks riots are OK, you're like Faragesque radicalised Muskite, and living in a fantasy.

If you bother to look at the Yougov polling, a lot of people were sympathetic to the peaceful protest on immigration, 35% had a fair amount of sympathy and 23% a lot of sympathy, that's nearly 60%.

That sounds about right, most people have immigration concerns, that doesn't translate to fucking dragging out non white English people from cars and burning police stations!

Again, you are not entitled to post whatever you want on someone else’s platform.

EXACTLY!

And again, I challenge OP to post a negative comment on any of the Tory or Reform Mp's pages and watch how quickly their admins remove them. This is in no way on Earth a 'sinister Labour thing' or censorship.

This is common practice on Facebook pages/groups.

This is all so goady, and over the top.

I'm behind on the thread but

'I read all media actually as I'm in the media sector. I read The Telegraph, The Guardian, The Mail, The Express, The Sun. All of them. It's my job. This is why I know this article is not about nothing and they would never be able to publish it without hard evidence'

The Telegraph? Hard evidence? Really?

All the restrictions to our right to protest put on us by the last Government in their Public Order Act 2023 not a whimper & then The Education Minister's Team deletes some Facebook comments & we're heading towards a hard left dictatorship!

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/08/2024 00:09

As entertaining as it has been to read the hyperbolic rantings on this thread, I can't help but feel a bit 🤨 at what has happened to the Right in Britain.

They seem to have lost their grip on reality.😱

I don't believe it either. Tory bots.

The truth of it is that the Mirror and the Guardian are no better as sources of fact than the Mail, Sun and Telegraph. People’s preferences are about the editorial stances and opinion pieces, not the factual rigour of the journalism.

Wonder what would have happened had Reform not existed and contested all those seats. How many more seats would the Tories have retained? Would be interesting to see a breakdown of this, does one exist - I mean, do the figures bear it out? Did Farage hand Starmer his huge majority?

Zotter · 18/08/2024 00:23

Nevermind91 · 17/08/2024 21:47

I'd always suggest reading Animal Farm before voting Labour.

Yes, because Starmer’s Labour govt is a facsimile of the Stalin regime…

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/08/2024 00:27

This thread is hilarious.😂😂😂😂

The fucking Torygraph? With its readership of less than 1/2 million? Who takes it seriously? They can’t even find anyone to buy it!

’so scared and afraid’😂😁😁

Do people in her position even need facebook pages. All seems a bit infantile. They will attract hateful comments so rather than delete just dont have a page in the first place.

I am a member of the fb group mentioned in the article. People have been posting screenshots of their messages before they vanish minutes later. None of the messages are hateful, they either disagree with the policy and describe sad stories of kids being removed from their schools or they politely question outcome. Its outrageous these people are being silenced for not conforming to labours view.

I don't say they were, it was the OP's statement about the Telegraph (you can add your paper of choice here) wouldn't print anything without hard evidence I was sceptical about!!

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 18/08/2024 00:45

It's very simplistic to think of politics as good guys Vs bad guys. It's just a bunch of guys, some with self serving intentions and some with intentions that may or may not align with your own.

Who are most people going to sympathise with ? the kids who have experienced privilege in attending a private school, but still being entitled to an education in state school and still leading a relatively privileged life.

Or the kids who have always attended state school but don’t have breakfast beforehand, and are lucky if tea/dinner is waiting for them when they get home. Don’t get to wear nice clothes, days out that cost or go on nice holidays.

I wish middle class people would stop whining when a tiny bit of their privilege is taken away.

Whether you believe some families of privately educated children are living in poverty or not, I was just confirming that the deleted comments by the education secretary were far from hateful. They merely expressed a different view/concern. No reason to delete. If the education secretary doesnt wish to engage with the electorate though then you are right, she should delete her account and prevent confusion.
