I can't put my finger on it but I always feel depressed in August. June on the other hand is the perfect month.Grin

Agree. Summer is dying and we have a long a long slog ahead until spring. Depressing.

The nights are drawing in for sure, the garden is past its best, and the start of another school year is hurtling towards us.

August is always crap. The best weather is always in June and July. I think they should move the school holidays back to July like in Scotland.

VivaVivaa · 17/08/2024 20:35

I have started feeling quite sad over the last few days. I wish I could be one of those people who sees beauty in all seasons but I just about tolerate Autumn and I positively hate winter. I adore spring and summer. I think it’s the dread of the next 6 months beginning to creep in.

Justrelax · 17/08/2024 20:41

I wish all the wasps were dead!

I don't mind August (and I LOVE when my colleagues are on holiday - yippee!) but I do feel sad that September is approaching as I don't feel we've had enough of a summer. For various personal reasons, I really needed this summer and although it's been lovely, my cup isn't filled yet.

I'm trying to make myself get excited about cosy evenings and hot chcolate and things. Planning Christmas shopping and markets with my friends.

loulouljh · 17/08/2024 20:41

I agree,,,want to move on now.

GrandHighPoohbah · 17/08/2024 20:41

I think it's more noticeable this year because we haven't really enjoyed lovely June/July evenings much, so August feels like it's come too soon. We seem to go from enjoying the summer holidays to thinking about September very quickly, people are posting "last hurrah to the summer" type things on social media and all the school shoes are out of stock!

HarperSabrina · 17/08/2024 20:43

Erm the weather here is delightful, my son is off school, we have spent the day at the beach and will tomorrow which means only have to spend money on a picnic… we have nice healthy sun tans… not sure what there is to be depressed about!

sweetpeaorchestra · 17/08/2024 20:44

I think it’s August in the UK that has that particular melancholy, certainly not in southern Europe.
I love the September back to school feeling, and really love high summer and long nights, but August here is neither crisp autumn nor really summer either. Sort of more a sad elegy for summer?
Though trying to love it for that and because it’s not grim, horrid Feb or March

There are no wasps, hadn't you noticed? This is not good

Why are there no wasps? I'm quite worried about that.

Missingpate · 17/08/2024 19:32

Oh wow, there really aren’t! 😮

I think that’s because they’re all in our garden, trying to dive bomb us through the window.

renthead · 17/08/2024 20:46

I don't feel like this but I can see why others do. I think August is like Sunday- some people get the "Sunday scaries" and it's the same feeling. My DH especially feels it in mid-August because he's a teacher.

BurntBroccoli · 17/08/2024 20:47

Yes I always find it sad too. The nights are already drawing in and the fresh greens in the countryside are changing to brown.
I do love Autumn though, it's just this blippy bit in mid to late August.

familyissues12345 · 17/08/2024 20:48

I've always felt like this mid august, tried for the last few years to have our holiday late august to have something to look forward to, but it makes bugger difference!

3kidsaremorethanenough · 17/08/2024 20:48

Agree it's a melancholy month, spare a thought for those of us with birthdays near the end of August always faced with excitement and anxiety as school starts and end of holidays gets closer

Like others , I get a strange , sad feeling at this time of year , I think it’s the “ back to school “ feeling , even though I’m 51 .

Ha it could be that! I'm 50s too so a looong time left!

GanninHyem · 17/08/2024 20:51

Nope. August is birthday month in our house. 4 birthdays to celebrate, always lots of family things going on, parties, happy times. Today we've had a wonderful family BBQ with a trip up the canal on BIL boat and fishing.

Life is what you make of it, if you let yourself wallow then more fool you!

They are all at Gullivers Valley in Rotherham - the place is swarming with them. Lots of kids crying because they'd been stung.

HauntedbyMagpies · 17/08/2024 20:53

Well I wasn't feeling low before I opened this thread but I bloody well am now

YesIReallyDoLikeRootBeer · 17/08/2024 20:54

On a personal level the first half of August is rough for me. My daughter died Aug 15, 1990 and my father died Aug 11, 2011. Once I'm past those dates though I start to feel rejuvenated. I live in the US. The nights are getting cooler which I love (I hate the heat of summer) and usually the days are cooler and less humid then they were in July. I work in a school and we have one more week and we are back. I love my job, so I'm happy to be going back. All my kids are grown now, but when they were school age I also loved the routine of "school time". Fall is my favorite season and I know it will be here soon

Trust me - I’d love to not wallow but the thought of schools being back in 2 weeks plus the impending doom of another long winter is a bit much to handle!

Allotmenthelp · 17/08/2024 20:55

August is my favourite month. Kids are off school and I’m lucky I have it off too, so lots of lovely days out. It’s still lovely and warm so I’m not having to contend with mud and spending money every time we go out.

I absolutely hate September though, going back to school and the nights dramatically drawing it. Not to mention that spider season starts! If I was rich I’d have a holiday home somewhere and come back in April.

GreenTeaLikesMe · 17/08/2024 19:58

August is actually quite a wet month in the UK. May and June are the driest months.

It never used to be growing up! The end of August is my birthday and it was always sunny and particularly when I was small, was always hot too. Every year for 7 years straight, we had a BBQ on the day of my birthday. And it's the last few days of August.

FuckThePoPo · 17/08/2024 20:56

That's why we always go abroad the last two weeks of August

Bunnycat101 · 17/08/2024 20:57

It doesn’t really make any sense though as there are lots of AI places they could have done with amazing kids clubs and/or a nannying service. It would have cost them a lot more to pay for accommodation for you all than just do a resort that provides childcare.
