Other people’s Botox habits making me look old

Humanpincushion · 15/08/2024 10:36

I’m in my mid thirties and I look my age, I think. I’m starting to get some creases round my eyes and some fine lines in my forehead and a deeper line in my smile crease.

im not necessarily bothered but over the last few years I’ve started to notice most of the friends and colleagues around my age ageing backwards 🤣

I went to the hairdresser the other day and the 17 year old apprentice was chattering away with a complete lack of tact as they often do and I mentioned approaching 40 in an offhand way she gasped and said oh I thought you were already past 40. When I revealed my true age of 36 she said seemed really suprised.

it got me thinking- as Botox seems so widely popular now has it changed perception to thinking people in their thirties are still fresh faced and wrinkle free ??!!

perhaps I just need to jump on the wagon and have some filler?

thoughts?

I agree.

Yes,I completely agree. I attach a video (quite a long watch), but really quite concerning. It's regarding the tear trough filler and how lots of practitioners have stopped doing them.

I'm in my 60s so no longer have any skin in this game (ho ho) but the rest of you have a choice: you can get the Botox and look young or you can not get the Botox and look old. That is just how it is in the real world.

Botox is best used as a prevention rather than a cure, best to have it younger.
I started in my early 30s to prevent the deep lines.
I wouldn't bother now if you're happy and not worried about the opinions of others.

Those saying they would shout at the innocent comment of a 17 yr old, really???
She is a teenager who thinks everyone over 30 is ancient. Leave her alone.

Actually I read an article recently which suggested that studies didn't support preventative botox as being particularly effective. So I'm not sure it is. Having it in 30s still makes sense as there are lines etc but the point they were making is 20s, not.

here is a dermatica link - if you use it I get a discount on my next prescription and you also get a discount of £10.00.

few tips - it’s on online prescription only treatment. Go through the online questions, upload a no-makeup photo as requested and then in the other comments section I wrote “interested to try tretinoin please” a day or so the consultation results came back and it was agreed I’d benefit from tret. So I’d definitely recommend adding you want to try it.

I have been using it for a year now and my forehead lines and 11s have definitely got finer. As an added bonus I don’t get a spot on my chin when I have my period.

a tube lasts longer than a month but you can easily go into your account and amend when your next delivery will be - so it works out pretty cheap for such a great product.

hope this helps.

Except it doesn't make you look younger in the real world. It just makes you look like a middle-aged woman who's had botox.

stainnotagain · 16/08/2024 07:27

I’ll never understand the “but how could you inject a TOXIN” scaremongering - our own bodies produce toxins, and so many things we encounter and ingest on a day to day basis are toxins. If you never touch soft drinks or alcohol, only ever eat organic food, don’t venture into polluted city centres, only clean your house using 100% natural ingredients, and don’t buy anything in plastic packaging to avoid cross-contamination you might have a point. But it always amuses me how many people sneer about Botox yet have far more dangerous toxins in their day to day life; many of which we don’t even know are there. At least botulinum toxin has been rigorously trialed, tested, and otherwise studied by the medical profession - unlike whatever your Pepsi/Tesco apples/Vanish carpet spray is laced with.

Lots of sun creams - most, actually - have also been found to contain “dangerous” ingredients, but they’re obviously still better than not wearing any. That’s why there are laws on what % they’re allowed to contain of certain chemicals. A ton of it would kill you, but a certain threshold is appropriate. Why would it be any different with Botox? And I know the answer is that we don’t “need” Botox in the same way we need sun cream or cleaning products or fruit, but life would be pretty boring if we only ever did things because we had to!

If the therapist is skilful it does.

If the therapist is skilful it does.

It doesn't, though. Celebs have access to the best practitioners in the world and they all still look within about 5 years of their age. J Lo (55) is probably the most natural looking but when you take away the insta filters, she still looks like a (stunning) mature late 40s.

happypickle · 16/08/2024 07:47

I do know what you mean OP, you almost need to get the work done in order to keep in line with your peers.

Also, please submit a gentle complaint about the teenager. Really is about the worst thing you can say to a customer when in the beauty sector!

Well considering the latest research is coming out that facial botox impedes neural pathways to the brain similar to Parkinsons disease I don't think we should be encouraging it when younger.
Facial responses are changed and
It literally changes your brain!

Look at then breast implant scandal
I think this and fillers will be heading the same way.

Have you got a link to those studies? Because a) botox has been around for a long time & is approved for medical use for migraine, dystonia & spasticity & b) cosmetic facial injections are subcutaneous (so just beneath the skin) so the only nerves nearby are tiny sensory nerve endings.
Someone with Parkinson's will classically have reduced facial movements (as the main issue with Parkinson's is slowness of movement generally) so might look a bit like someone who has had way too much botox but that's just 2 things looking a bit alike, not cause & effect.

I’m fed up with people presuming that those of us in our 40s with no forehead lines or crows feet are using Botox.

I’m mid 40s and have never used Botox (or tret or retinol). I do use spf, have a regular basic skincare routine - I always cleanse and moisturise, don’t sunbathe, drink lots of water, don’t drink alcohol, don’t have a very expressive face (I don’t scrunch up my forehead whereas I notice others do), and looking at my parents I’m lucky with genetics.

I once heard a work colleague make a comment that made it sound like she thought I’d had Botox, and this was over 10 years ago. My forehead can get a little shiny during the day and apparently this is a sign 🙄

I read similar on the ‘how old do I look’ post the other day. People saying that those in their 40s with no lines must have had Botox, and the shiny skin is a giveaway. This mid 40s woman has no forehead lines and has never even been tempted by Botox, and it’s really annoying when people presume others have had it when they don’t know that this is the case.

Im 40 with no wrinkles or Botox. I don't want people to assume I use it either, I'd hate that. My face is my very expressive either which likely explains less wrinkles but I can move it!

goldspeck · 16/08/2024 07:57

Same here, I can move it, I just don’t (not my forehead, anyway)!

Myfavouriteflowers · 15/08/2024 10:51

My thoughts are:

Firstly, why are there so many threads on MN just lately about botox?

Secondly , why are so many young women - and 36 is young - so obsessed with searching for wrinkles and lines and seem to think their skin should look the same as when they were 16?

Thirdly, are you maximising the ways to help your skin look its best. Drinking lots of water, eating healthy, getting good sleep, exercising, good skin care regime?

Fourthly, why do you think pumping toxins into your body is a good idea?

Fifthly, why take any notice of what a 17 year old hairdressing apprentice says in chit chat? Does her opinion matter?

Edited

Agreed

BeaRF75 · 16/08/2024 09:24

But why do you want to look younger than you are? The Botox look just tells other people that you are insecure and don't mind having a plastic-looking face. You're not very old at the moment, but just age gracefully - wrinkles are the story of our lives, we should be proud of them. Oh, and stop bothering about what other people think!

How old are you, lol!

I don't think people in their 30s realise what an ageing face really looks and feels like. Its not just wrinkles. Wrinkles are fine to a point. It's sagging, looking grumpy all the time, looking tired, having lots of youthful energy but seeing an old, miserable person looking back at you. Having botox has been a game changer for me. I wear very little make up and permanently look as though I've just got back from the world's most relaxing holiday.

Cantavoid · 16/08/2024 09:38

How do people get tret? Can you get it aboard?

Oh blah blah blah.

I got to about 41 and realised I had a permanent furrowed brow, and it was giving me headaches. My left eyelid had started to sag and it feels uncomfortable. My crows feet were making my eyeliner smudge immediately after I put it on.

Why the hell should I not do something simple that remedies all those things? I like the look of it. I'm not bothered about looking younger, but I like to look awake and refreshed.

All the sneering on Botox threads is so basic; if you're ever dyed your hair I'm not sure what the issue is really; that's pretending you're not aging and involves chemicals too surely 🤷‍♀️

Spinet · 16/08/2024 09:43

A very very dear friend of mine gets Botox and I kept thinking she's annoyed at me because her facial expressions are so much more muted than they used to be. Took me ages to realise it's the Botox. I would rather look old than impassive about everything, so I do look old and that's fine.

Pedallleur · 16/08/2024 10:36

How do people know about the botox they get? is there a brand or brands that are recommended/medically tested or you just hope you get something that is ok. Does the salon/shop buy anything that could be made by anyone somewhere or do they have to buy from approved sources?

I just make sure I go to a dentist rather than beautician, they charge a little more but spend 7 years learning facial muscles for their main job and I trust them more to get the proper stuff.

It's a privilege to grow old, not everyone gets to.

di2004 · 16/08/2024 11:07

I'm 60 (just turned) and of course, I've got a few lines, especially on my forehead and bunny lines.
I'm too scared to have botox in case it turns me into something very unnatural. If anyone remembers Jackie Stallone they will know what i mean!
I think there is too much pressure to look 'perfect' nowadays, especially with a lot of celebrities following the botox/filler trend, so embrace your little lines and wrinkles - it's all part of life.

OK.

Yep, I get that. Not sure why getting botox means you don't respect that?

Honestly the pearl clutching on here is amusing. If you don't want botox, don't get botox. Noone cares.
