Other people’s Botox habits making me look old

Humanpincushion · 15/08/2024 10:36

I’m in my mid thirties and I look my age, I think. I’m starting to get some creases round my eyes and some fine lines in my forehead and a deeper line in my smile crease.

im not necessarily bothered but over the last few years I’ve started to notice most of the friends and colleagues around my age ageing backwards 🤣

I went to the hairdresser the other day and the 17 year old apprentice was chattering away with a complete lack of tact as they often do and I mentioned approaching 40 in an offhand way she gasped and said oh I thought you were already past 40. When I revealed my true age of 36 she said seemed really suprised.

it got me thinking- as Botox seems so widely popular now has it changed perception to thinking people in their thirties are still fresh faced and wrinkle free ??!!

perhaps I just need to jump on the wagon and have some filler?

thoughts?

Ignore the 17 year old as anyone over the age of 25 is ancient when you're a teenager.

This 😂

babiesonthecarpet · 15/08/2024 21:34

A couple of my colleagues have Botox in their early thirties and I don’t think it makes them look younger. They just sort of look a bit shiny and stretched.

I’m 36 and I got asked for ID the other day so I’m taking that as proof I still look young to some people at least.

The teenager at your appointment was incredibly rude and hopefully feels mortified and won’t make the same comment again. Although at 17 I doubt I could tell the age of anyone over 25 very accurately.

illumi · 15/08/2024 21:37

I don't think botox makes people look younger, just smoother. However I do get what you say about the beauty standard shifting. My SIL was talking recently about quiting getting her lashes and nails done professionally to pay for botox because all her friends were now doing botox and she felt like the haggard one out of them. She is early 40's.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 15/08/2024 21:43

The people I know who have botox look older than they are, same with all the fillers. They're also ones who spend so much money on creams, plaster themselves in make up.

The people who look good are the ones who don't mess with their face. Don't cake themselves in make up. They eat a sensible diet and exercise regularly and don't sunbathe.

Yoyodiet · 15/08/2024 21:44

The way I would have made a SCENE and cried my eyes out to get a free haircut. She was so mean! 🤣

Am 52. I use Tret. I think I look pretty good though not necessarily young. Never getting Botox or fillers. Ever. Don't care if everyone else looks like Molly Mae!

Any specific Tret you recommend? I have heard good things but don't know where to start!

@spikeandbuffy24 same question to you too :)

Tescovalu · 15/08/2024 21:49

Maybe it wasn’t your skin?

This is simply not true

TheMoth · 15/08/2024 21:49

I really wouldn't worry about what a 17 yr old thinks. According to the teens in my school, I'm between 32 and 52- often depending on what I'm wearing, how annoyed I am and how old their mum is. If they know my first name, it instantly narrows the field.

Fwiw, at 18 I thought 25 yr old women were ancient and should not be trespassing in my nightclubs. 25yr old men were OK though. 🙄

BlueFlint · 15/08/2024 21:50

This thread made me laugh and feel totally vindicated. I haven't aged brilliantly (tough few years plus genetics) and have quite deep 11s and forehead lines even though I'm not yet 40. Have sworn I won't give in to cosmetic procedures but I definitely feel completely unreasonably resentful of all the people who DO have Botox etc for making me look even worse by comparison 😅 My MIL has a face full of surgeries and Botox and I quietly dread her being mistaken for my toddler's mother (she would LOVE that!) But I suppose on balance I like my face to be able to move naturally, there's something slightly off-putting when you notice that people's expressions aren't quite right? And I think as people do age it starts to look less and less convincing.

I have hope it ends up being one of those things people look back on in a few decades and say "people injected actual toxins into their faces to paralyse themselves WTF???" but who knows.

greengreyblue · 15/08/2024 21:51

Your hairdresser was unbelievably rude!

MattDamon · 15/08/2024 21:59

'there's something slightly off-putting when you notice that people's expressions aren't quite right?'

Definitely. Even procedures people swear you don't notice... I saw a women in her 50s on TV and I knew instantly that she'd had a lower blepharoplasty. There were no scars, but it stood out because it didn't match the rest of her face.

Gowlett · 15/08/2024 22:05

I was working with a woman today, about my age, four teenage kids. Nice figure, hair done. Well dressed. But a regular Mom, not glam or anything. Her forehead was totally smooth & there was a weird mouth thing going on every time she smiled. Botox etc is always obvious to me. And even if it’s done well, the person looks too good to be true. Who knows, she could have been looking at me, thinking “she could really benefit from Botox. It would make such a difference!”

i have a vision that in 20 years time (less or more) there will be a health scandal about vapes and botox/fillers. that they were unregulated, unapproved etc and the companies that made them have vanished. And we have a relatively young population whose lives may be blighted by the chemicals they inhaled/injected

I agree.

PerfectYear321 · 15/08/2024 22:21

Comedycook · 15/08/2024 12:22

Not necessarily true. This is like when people say all fake tans look orange. Bad ones do.

I know a woman who has Botox done...she genuinely doesn't look botoxed....she just look like she looks brilliant for her age.

" for her age". Exactly. So she probably doesn't actually look younger.

Look at the recent Kylie Jenner Botox/fillers furore. And she's a billionaire who can afford/be gifted the best and is only 27.

PerfectYear321 · 15/08/2024 22:28

I think even a 12 year old would know that it's not on to gasp and tell someone you thought they were much older than they are. Most people know that when someone tells you their age you've got to pretend they don't look it 😂. She seems to have no social skills. It's like someone saying they're 11 stone and you gasping and saying I thought you weighed much more. Even a kid knows it's hurtful.

BleedingMeDry · 15/08/2024 22:31

I had a traumatic event that took a great toll on my physical and mental health. I’ve had therapy & am doing better now, but the severe stress left me with an unpleasant looking line above my eye. I’m not squeamish so I went and got the weird line “toxed” out of my forehead. I felt much better, as the crease made me think of the incident every time I caught sight of it. If id been scarred in the assault I would have tried to repair that too so I refuse to accept shaming for fixing visual evidence of someone abusing me. It also made a huge improvement to my chronic migraines!

Yeah because people who get Botox are too stupid to also eat well and exercise.

What a load of horseshit.

redalex261 · 15/08/2024 22:41

Don’t think botox and fillers makes people look younger. Lots of very young people are getting them and looking like freaks though it’s unnecessary.

People tend to look younger if they maintain decent skincare, good haircut, clothing, bit of make up etc. Some people just look older than their age due to genetics. .

But, as mentioned multiple times, 17 year olds are notoriously bad at judging ages!

I know for a fact if I ate better, reduced stress, and exercised, my skin would probably look brighter and I'd be less inclined to invest in Botox.

WayTooManyTabsOpen · 15/08/2024 18:57

How do so many people afford it? I’m baffled by that. It’s so expensive and yet so many people seem to get it. I’m on a decent salary but with a child and nursery fees, plus cost of living and mortgage interest rates, even getting a regular haircut or replacing my old running shoes is something I have to save for.

I'm on minimum wage and save some every month for it, it's worth it to me as it makes such a big difference. I don't get haircuts etc

HappyLittleNarwhal · 15/08/2024 23:27

Good for you @Wrennyjenwren

I exercise for my weight, I get Botox for my crows feet. Totally separate things.

I was the same. Had spinal surgery and after the relentless pain had gone, looked in the mirror and realised the pain was still etched across my face
Had Botox 3 times but haven't had any since 2019, started tret with skin and me in 2020 and pretty happy with my skin now

Edited

I get my Tret from family in another country so no use to you. I believe you can get it from Skin and Me or Dermatica in the UK. There are numerous threads on this.

Tret may not suit everyone; I have thick oily Asian skin which needs drying. Its the best thing I have done for my skin though. It doesn't do anything for sagging or jowls though. But as I said upthread, I don't think looking your age or even older is anything to be ashamed of. I don't want to look like Sandra Bullock. That's too shiny and odd for me.

You don't see the irony then? They are literally putting a poison into their body in an attempt to look good. That to me makes them stupid.

People injecting themselves with a toxin cannot go on about healthy eating in my book either.
