FYI if your house is hot, open your loft hatch

It works! Bedrooms was noticeably cooler last night!

I know it's not an AIBU but in this heat, I thought I'd share.

The house was super hot yesterday afternoon so I wrestled with the loft hatch and it works. Granted, it's not air conditioning but such a simple thing that helps.

Will give it a go, thank you for the tip!

My loft is an oven.

Tulipvase · 13/08/2024 10:15

We don’t have a loft so can’t try it (bedroom is the loft) but tbf, here at least ( SE) it was significantly cooler last night than the previous night. Down stairs was about 4 degrees cooler this morning than it was yesterday morning.

Tagyoureit · 13/08/2024 10:17

Our loft isn't converted so that obviously would make a difference but I was surprised.

Had to ignore the thought of someone peering down whilst I went for a night wee though 🫣🤣

i would be worried in case there were rats who might fall down the hatch!
i dont think there are but my worry is real!

vodkaredbullgirl · 13/08/2024 10:19

Would be walking into my loft door, every time I went to the loo 😆

Thankfully, this one pushes up and to the side!

Heat rises, the heat from your house will go up the hatch. Everyone's loft is an oven!

A loft will usually be hotter than the ventilated living area on the floor below. Because the roof has the sun on it all day, ultimately from all sides.

Spacie · 13/08/2024 10:40

Having the hatch open at night increases the draw of warm air upwards which is replaced by cooler air from any open windows lower down. It's not perfect but it does help.

eosmum · 13/08/2024 10:42

My loft is insulated with the silver stuff, will it still work? Desperate here.

Knittedfairies2 · 13/08/2024 10:43

When it's really hot our loft hatch opens all by itself.

gamerchick · 13/08/2024 10:44

My loft hatch is in a cupboard and there are beasties in the loft Grin

shellyleppard · 13/08/2024 10:46

Good idea but my cats would be up there running riot 😂😂

I did this and it definitely helped! The cat tried but failed to get up 🤣 We do now however, have a huge spider on the landing that DD is insisting is her pet! His name is Gerald 🤷‍♀️🤣

Tagyoureit · 13/08/2024 10:59

@gamerchick ah, mine's in the hallway!

No beasties have dropped down yet....

Gerald would be given the house and I'd be moving out!!

Luckily, no spiders have dropped down either!

Ha this reminded me of next door's cat from years ago. We have a converted loft and had the window open up there to let some heat out during the day. We were sitting in the office working, and next thing we knew next door's cat came trotting down the stairs without a care in the world, stopped by our desks, sneezed, looked at us as if butter wouldn't melt... then headed downstairs and let himself out the back door and went home! Grin he was a cutie, obviously been brave and got up on the roof at some point.

No cats here but my DD4 is demanding to know how daddy got in to the loft without the ladder! I keep telling her he's not up there! 🤣

GallopingGhost · 13/08/2024 11:07

Might try this. I'm worried though that the hundreds of spiders that live in the loft decide to relocate to my bedroom in the night.
