It works! Bedrooms was noticeably cooler last night!

I know it's not an AIBU but in this heat, I thought I'd share.

The house was super hot yesterday afternoon so I wrestled with the loft hatch and it works. Granted, it's not air conditioning but such a simple thing that helps.

My loft is an oven.

Mine too, when Dh opens it, you get a blast of hot air.

Hahahaha unfortunately not. I was hearing too many strange noises from above that didn't make sense. Often we have birds nesting up there but this was loud thuds and banging, then I found the phrogging rabbit hole. To make it worse, youtube picked up on this and when I couldn't sleep and started scrolling at 2am, the algorithm chose my fear and showed all the scary ghost and demon vids from Central and South America. At night, this is now me 😂

🤣🤣🤣

My loft is insulated with the silver stuff, will it still work? Desperate here.

Yes it does.

I thought everyone knew about this, 20+ years my loft has been open.

I also have bats in my attic and they never come down. There's no flies upstairs even though they come in downstairs so either the attic spiders or attic bats keep them down too. All round win.

Through draught from open windows too, upstairs is always cool at night.

Bumping this as I've just opened my loft hatch today and all the bedrooms are noticeably cooler!!

Will the hear from the loft not get out into the house?

No heat rises.

Ive never looked in my loft or opened it 🤣

SeLHopeful2024 · 19/06/2025 19:01

Hasn't made any difference in my house.
Closed windows and curtains too and still over 28° when I came home at 6pm.

Piggywaspushed · 19/06/2025 19:09

Me too. It doesn't work . I live in the place that nearly always has the warmest night temperatures. Opening the windows in the evening does not cool things down and there is no through draught. Can't keep windows open all night because of road noise, annoyingly but it would still be horribly warm. Abroad they tend to also have stone floors. I'd love those electric shutters.

For anyone struggling to sleep with the heat try a dog cooling mat in your bed. I had three mats (2 med, 1 large) plus two fans for my elderly dobermann who used to lie on one of the mats on the sofa with a fan in the open window (north facing of course, he was no fool) and another fan circulating the air within the room which to be fair stays pretty cool no matter the weather while waiting for me to serve him chicken flavoured home made icepops!! Sadly I lost his highness late last year but he did inspire me to try a cooling mat in my bed and its brilliant. I sleep alone in a double bed so I move on and off the mat as needed. Also helps with restless legs.

He have a section of flat roof at the top of our house with a big sky light
which is opens fully and has been permanently open for the last month or so House cools down a lot over night as it draws like a chimney

but in winter…. Big big gas bills!

Everyone’s will be because heat rises

ThymeSageRosemary · 19/06/2025 19:33

Ok I'm trying it now. Will report back

Tagyoureit · 19/06/2025 20:19

Well it certainly worked for this house.

I've opened the windows upstairs and theres a lovely breeze wafting around and its so much cooler than last night.

This works brilliantly and have been doing it for years. But last year we were sat in the living room watching tv and a bat flew down the stairs, past the tv and out the window. (We still open the loft, but only by a little to try and keep the bats from interrupting our TV dinners!)

Katemax82 · 19/06/2025 21:15

I live in a bungalow so the loft hatch hangs down in the middle of the hallway
