FYI if your house is hot, open your loft hatch

It works! Bedrooms was noticeably cooler last night!

I know it's not an AIBU but in this heat, I thought I'd share.

The house was super hot yesterday afternoon so I wrestled with the loft hatch and it works. Granted, it's not air conditioning but such a simple thing that helps.

It’s a no from me. We have had many an animal scurrying around in there 😬

Crunchymum · 13/08/2024 11:09

I'm too afraid the person phrogging in the loft might see this as an invitation to join the family 😂

Seriously though our loft is probably "escapeable" for the cats (they'd have all night to plot their escape!)

MonkeyToez · 13/08/2024 11:10

I wish I could try it but a squirrel lives in our loft and I don't fancy chasing that around in the middle of the night.

Such a shame as our bedrooms are always sweltering😔

Tagyoureit · 13/08/2024 11:10

Well I'm happy to report there have been no sightings of spiders, rats, cats, beasties or monsters!

And I live with DS10, my nostrils are often offended by smells so I probably couldn't tell if my loft smelt of farts!

Why aren't new build houses being built with some kind of heat vent system that can be opened in the summer.

Also, external shutters for windows for extreme heat...and integrated AC...

It amazes me that new builds are not taking any account of climate change.

Bibblebobblebibble · 13/08/2024 11:13

Regarding loft hatches - does this work if you have a modern house built with SIPS?

I feel like opening the hatch would work better with an older style roof?

I get what you're saying but you don't need external shutters if you have curtains / blinds.

Keep the blinds shut / curtains drawn on the sunny side of the house, windows and blinds open on the shady side, adjust as the sun moves around. If you're out for the day, shut everything. Has the same effect.

My loft smells of farts :(

I'm not sure mine smells of farts lol but it does smell bad, I couldn't keep the loft hatch open for the smell. Not sure what it is, just a horrible hot, dusty, woody smell.
We've invested in fitted aircon over the last 2 years and my god it is a game changer.

shellyleppard · 13/08/2024 11:18

@abouttoturn50 lets hope your little one doesn't try cuddling it in bed at night 😳😂

mondaytosunday · 13/08/2024 12:00

Unfortunately my DD lives in our converted loft and it's the hottest room in the house! Yes she has her blinds down and fan on. Today cooler thank goodness!
I hear putting a bucket of water in front of a fan also helps.

init4thecats · 13/08/2024 12:06

It works until the cats work out how to scale that ladder and end up under floorboards... Ours took about five seconds to work that out!

SaintHonoria · 13/08/2024 12:07

That's an open invite for all the monster spiders in the attic to pay you a visit whilst your sleeping. 😲

SaintHonoria · 13/08/2024 12:07

You're ^

TeenToTwenties · 13/08/2024 12:12

Stop your house getting too hot in the first place by closing windows and curtains during the day.

Demonhunter · 13/08/2024 12:14

No way! I went down a phrogging rabbit hole last week and my loft hatch is staying locked 🤣

DH sleeps by the door so I'd sacrifice him and escape out the window whilst Aragog devours DH

Was that off the back of dogging French style? 🤣

We do thus. First heard of it from Chris Evans when he was still on Radio 2.

Another tip is to turn your pillows over. You’ll then have a nice cool pillow to lie on.

Willmafrockfit · 13/08/2024 13:58

sometimes i put an ice cooler thing under my pillow and when i turn the pillow over it is gloriously cold

Scared Dog GIF

Hahahaha unfortunately not. I was hearing too many strange noises from above that didn't make sense. Often we have birds nesting up there but this was loud thuds and banging, then I found the phrogging rabbit hole. To make it worse, youtube picked up on this and when I couldn't sleep and started scrolling at 2am, the algorithm chose my fear and showed all the scary ghost and demon vids from Central and South America. At night, this is now me 😂

My loft is an oven.

Well yes, that is kind of the point. Heat rises so it won't come back down into the house. The hot air from the house will rise into the open loft hatch and be replaced with cooler air.

mansplainingsincethe90s · 13/08/2024 14:24

Tip from Spanish friends.

During the day, close the windows and draw blinds and curtains. Make the place dark. Drink water and fan yourself. In the evening open up the blinds and curtains and windows to get the air circulating.
