Would you take the bottle of good wine out of the trolley

The other day, I went to the supermarket with my young Dd, I had no coins so we went to look for a trolley not connected to the others. There was one and Dd went to grab it, I was just putting her in when she said there was someone’s shopping in it. I looked down and there was a bottle of very good wine left in it, I’m guessing someone had forgotten it 🤷🏻‍♀️
I took her out and we got another trolley and left it there
What would you have done? Left it there, taken the bottle yourself or taken it inside the shop to a member of staff?

Return it to the shop. Buyer would have realised when they got home and probably came back for it.

OneTC · 12/08/2024 11:22

Taken it in the shop

AutumnFroglets · 12/08/2024 11:22

I would have handed it in as lost property. I have frequently done that when I've found bracelets or necklaces on the floor inside/by trolley as well. Wouldn't have crossed my mind to keep it.

Hoppinggreen · 12/08/2024 11:22

Taken it in to Customer Services in case the person came back

sweeneytoddsrazor · 12/08/2024 11:23

Take it inside. Lots of people forget/lose things and come back to ask if they had been handed in

Leafcutterantsarecool · 12/08/2024 11:24

Handed it in to the shop. Or maybe left it there if I was in a rush and didn’t want a conversation with customer services. I wouldn’t take it, it’s not mine.

Kebarbra · 12/08/2024 11:25

I hate wine but even if it was something I liked I'd take it back in.

JabbaTheBeachHut · 12/08/2024 11:26

I probably would've popped it into the nearest trolley.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 12/08/2024 11:27

Just left it in the trolley.

The person isn't going to be able to go back and claim it - there's no proof at all that they left it behind. They could just as easily be a chancer looking to get a free bottle of wine!

sleekcat · 12/08/2024 11:28

Definitely take it into the shop to the customer services. I once left a whole bag of shopping hanging on a trolley in the carpark and was mortified to get home and realise. Luckily someone had taken it inside and it was kept for me.

Willmafrockfit · 12/08/2024 11:29

we found some supermarket lurpak in the carpark hedge, and took it home, but i then threw it away.
wine, i am not sure

That's not true, they will give it to you. It's unlikely a chancer would know the exact thing someone bought and forgot, and then try to claim it.

OfficerChurlish · 12/08/2024 11:30

I'm always conflicted on this one - leave the item where it is so if the person realises right away they'll find it where they left it, or hand it in so it's safe until the person returns? In this case, I'd probably turn it in - mainly because there's so much traffic and even if I left the trolley and took another, the next person would have the same dilemma. But I think what you did was fine.

Well of course there is. If op had handed it in and the original purchaser had gone to the customer service desk and been able to describe the wine, surely that's proof enough?

TwinklyAmberOrca · 12/08/2024 11:33

Hand it in to the kiosk as the person would then be able to get it when they realise they'd forgotten.

Otherwise some dishonest person would pocket it.

AgileGreenSeal · 12/08/2024 11:35

Taken it into customer services.

If you bought it & accidentally left it in the trolly you would hope someone had handed it in, and you could come back & get it.

Treat other people as you would like to be treated.

Stefanswife · 12/08/2024 11:38

I would have handed it in to customer services.

Longchampsachomp · 12/08/2024 11:39

I would take it to customer services.

Left it in the trolley

SeeTheWorldAnotherWay · 12/08/2024 11:45

Really, OP?
REALLY!??
I despair.
All you can really do now is hope that a) you never leave something of (perceived) value somewhere, and b) if you do, it’s not someone like you who comes across it.
Nice role modelling to your kid too.
🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Neverendingschoolholidays · 12/08/2024 11:56

@SeeTheWorldAnotherWay Excuse me?
I left it there and told her they may realise and come back to their discarded trolley

It's not that terrible. I could understand your reaction if she'd taken the wine for herself but she didn't.
About a year ago my dad found a bottle of spirit in his trolley he left it in the trolley intending to hand it in and some woman came running across the car park yelling at him for stealing her whiskey.
So you can't win sometimes.

FrenchandSaunders · 12/08/2024 11:58

I'd have drunk it whilst doing my shopping.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 12/08/2024 11:59

To be honest it would depend on the queue at customer service. If I didn't have to wait I'd hand it in, if there were people already waiting I'd leave it in the trolley.
