Would you take the bottle of good wine out of the trolley

The other day, I went to the supermarket with my young Dd, I had no coins so we went to look for a trolley not connected to the others. There was one and Dd went to grab it, I was just putting her in when she said there was someone’s shopping in it. I looked down and there was a bottle of very good wine left in it, I’m guessing someone had forgotten it 🤷🏻‍♀️
I took her out and we got another trolley and left it there
What would you have done? Left it there, taken the bottle yourself or taken it inside the shop to a member of staff?

Handed it to someone in the shop explaining what had happened. I don't think there's any other logical thing to do.

sleekcat · 12/08/2024 11:30

That's not true, they will give it to you. It's unlikely a chancer would know the exact thing someone bought and forgot, and then try to claim it.

Well exactly. Someone hands in a bottle of Wairau Cove Sauvignon blanc to customer services. The owner goes to customer services and says, "l left a bottle of wine in the trolley, it was Wairau Cove Sauvignon blanc, i don't suppose someone has handed this in"

BreatheAndFocus · 12/08/2024 12:06

Taken it into the shop to Customer Services. Someone paid for that. When they get home they’ll realise what’s happened (”I got us a nice bottle of X, DP…..”) and phone the store.

scoobiedew · 12/08/2024 12:09

Honestly I would just leave it in the trolley. I don't generally take it upon myself to sort out random people's lost property unless it was something important like a wallet or phone or child

ExpressCheckout · 12/08/2024 12:15

Leave in the trolley. Seriously, not worth being the honest citizen here. You will be seen on CCTV taking it out of the trolley, but not necessarily seen on CCTV handing it to the customer desk.

A friend did this with a small amount of cash once, found in street outside bank. She handed it into the bank. The bank assistant pocketed it. My friend was charged with 'theft by finding' as the assistant denied everything.

She lost her job as soon as she was charged.

It took months to sort out and for her to be declared innocent. Police could not be less interested, it was too easy for them to push for friend to be charged rather than doing a bit of fairly obvious detective work. Lazy bastards.

Grmumpy · 12/08/2024 12:16

I have gone back for forgotten items..sometimes successfully. I would definitely have taken it in. It is nice to see such honest responses.. not the greedy take it you found it.

sweetpickle2 · 12/08/2024 12:16

Am I the only person who would have taken it?

A bottle of supermarket wine, even a nice one, left in a trolley outside of the shop- absolutely would have.

Wasteddaysanddays · 12/08/2024 12:20

Take it in the store. The one I work for would log it on the system as 'Goods paid for but left behind'
It then goes back on the shelf until claimed, then when claimed taken back off the shelf or refunded.
If you ask and it's not on the system then that is I am afraid bad luck and no refund or replacement.

Last year I treated myself to a very expensive purse, Aspinall's, for a significant birthday, a couple of weeks later I realised I'd lost it! Eventually, having mentally retraced my steps, I phoned Aldi and Yes, it had been handed in from a trolley, so I got it back. Please hand things in to the store!

Wasteddaysanddays · 12/08/2024 12:24

Just to add products that are chilled or frozen will not be kept or recorded as they have no way of knowing how long they have been out of the fridge or freezer.
But an unopened bottle would be ok

@SeeTheWorldAnotherWay maybe reread the OP and give commenting another go? She never stole the wine 🙄

we found some supermarket lurpak in the carpark hedge, and took it home, but i then threw it away.
wine, i am not sure

What a story! 😂

WonderingWanda · 12/08/2024 12:30

Take it to customer services.

SpeculatingRooks · 12/08/2024 12:31

I would've given it to the homeless bloke that sits outside our tesco, that would've made his year!
I know it sounds mean and people are going to say..what if someone treated themselves to it with their birthday money..etc but in my eyes if you're careless enough to leave a good bottle of wine in a trolley you can probably afford another one.

BCBird · 12/08/2024 12:32

Taken it inside. I remember the once leaving behind at till a CD. Was gutted when I returned to find it hadn't been handed in

Willmafrockfit · 12/08/2024 12:32

if i was on my way in to the shop of course hand it in , on my way out, just putting the trolley back, fair game, i think

@DoIWantTo where exactly did I say she stole the wine? She willingly did fuck all with it which I think is rather shitty human behaviour, especially as she was going in to the store anyway. Take your own advice, dearie.

godmum56 · 12/08/2024 12:37

return to shop.
I'd not just think it was the best way to get it back to the owner, but would be concerned about a unnaccompanied teen child finding it.

Timeforaglassofwine · 12/08/2024 12:39

FrenchandSaunders · 12/08/2024 11:58

I'd have drunk it whilst doing my shopping.

I came here to say that! 🤣
Let's remember also that it's an expensive bottle of wine by supermarket standards, so what, £20 tops?
Money I would and have handed back without hesitation, especially when with my children as its important to show case honesty.

Gymmum82 · 12/08/2024 12:42

I’d have left it in the trolley. I don’t like wine. If I did I might have taken it home

Edited

but surely you show honesty by handing the wine back too?

SeeTheWorldAnotherWay · 12/08/2024 12:45

Neverendingschoolholidays · 12/08/2024 11:56

@SeeTheWorldAnotherWay Excuse me?
I left it there and told her they may realise and come back to their discarded trolley

You’ve asked a question on AIBU…but it seems you don’t want the YABU feedback? I’m really not sure then what the point of your post is. Would you like to be congratulated for doing nothing? I was obviously raised differently to you and probably a good decade or two before you. I cannot fathom why you wouldn’t just hand it in, especially as you considered it an item of value, and you were going in to the shop anyway.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/08/2024 12:47

If I found it when I was leaving the store, then I'd probably take it. If I was on my way in I'd probably just hand it back into the shop.
I feel bad for the person who left it though, as they will go back and the cameras will show them leaving the shop with it, so they probably won't replace it.

Coconutter24 · 12/08/2024 12:47

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 12/08/2024 11:27

Just left it in the trolley.

The person isn't going to be able to go back and claim it - there's no proof at all that they left it behind. They could just as easily be a chancer looking to get a free bottle of wine!

A chancer isn’t going to be able to go into the store with a receipt of the exact same wine that has been left behind.

Id of taken to customer services, especially if I was going in the shop anyway. If it’s a decent bottle someone may return to the store or phone up to check they haven’t left it on the end of a checkout or something
