TW - Upsetting information: XL Bully attack *edited by MNHQ

Another xl bully attack, this time it was in my home town last week.
An xl bully ran out of the house down the road and attacked the nearest dog it saw a little dauchshund ripping both its legs off, it took 4 men and two women to get the xl bully off the other dog. The other little dog is alive thanks to the bravery of other people there at the time , however it had to have both legs ( what was left of them ) amputated.
Its extremely sad. The owner of the dauchshund is an elderly lady who was out walking the little dog ans she is utterly traumatised as expected.
The dog has been seized and owners will be prosecuted we have been told.
The reason I'm posting this is because I feel prosecution and dog being seized hasnt really solved anything has it? What is being done to prevent what happened in the first place? Nothing?? These dogs are still attacking / killing animals and children/ adults
Am I being unreasonable in thinking enough isnt being done to get rid of these hurrendous dogs?????

If the dog was so aggressive, I'm astonished so many adults were willing to approach it to remove the smaller dog from its jaws.

Seems very odd indeed that Cornwall Live, The Cornishman, D&C Police etc haven't made any requests for witnesses / CCTV or followed up on any Facebook posts about it.

Also see the article above with video footage , those people are trying to save a dog and are doing everything they can, it seems a very similar situation

That's awful, I am a dog owner and lover and am actually really scared about XL bullies, my DDs walk our dog and I'm almost at the point of saying they can't anymore because I'm worried they'll get attacked if one attacks our dog and they try and get in the way.

I know any breed can attack in the right circumstances and agree it is the owners not just the dog but I don't think responsible dog owners tend to go for XL bullies and they have such a strong bite that means they're more of a risk than other breeds, and that's just a fact that can't be dismissed.

HappiestSleeping · 10/08/2024 23:49

XL Bullies are banned, and owners do face serious jail time.

It doesn't stop it happening though unfortunately, just reduced the likelihood.

Agree, it's not preventing anything is it? Just consequences set out for when something does happen... by then it's all too late

It's happening all over. This was recently, and did make the news, possibly because they had footage:

TW: video.

Yes national news.. unsurprisingly

Watermel · 11/08/2024 00:14

ButtSurgery · 11/08/2024 00:09

Yep, and that made the national press.

Cornwall is a small community - I'm very surprised something so nasty has gone down, has a Just Giving page up and running, and yet there's nothing at all on Facebook, Twitter, Google or the local news agencies at all.

I thought you were trying to imply that OP was making it up.

And you can see in the video of the similar attack that the XL is aggressive, yet still humans are trying to intervene (I would not!).

MatLeave · 11/08/2024 00:15

That's absolutely terrible. I'm finding it hard to understand why this breed are still allowed to be kept as 'pets'. There are so many people who have them and treat them as 'big pets'. I've seen it on FB, animal charities appealing for help with funding/ownership. No, they're vicious and killers. I don't agree with healthy animals being pts but believe they should all be rounded up and held somewhere and given a good life in captivity away from humans and other animals as they can't control what comes naturally to them.

Citylightsarebright · 11/08/2024 00:15

ShouldIEvenBother · 10/08/2024 23:53

YANBU. And I for one am absolutely terrified of them. That poor little dog and elderly owner - it's just heart-breaking.

And I am so done with the "it's not the breed it's the owner" rhetoric we all get the pleasure of hearing when this topic comes around on some corner of the internet 🙄These particular dogs are something else and absolutely more needs to be done. This situation will not stop anytime soon, I fear. There are certainly more deaths, amputations, and disfigurements to come - we know this is the case.

Yes I know, the poor lady its heartbreaking 😭

This is probably a stupid question, but how did they eventually manage to free to poor little dog that was attacked, and what did the XL do, when they finally managed to free it's grip? How is an attack like this handled in the minutes after, as presumably the XL is still being aggressive?? I assume that this XL was euthanised?

GreyTS · 11/08/2024 00:21

This is all so ridiculous, the deed not breed people have been comprehensively proved wrong when it come so these dogs. The humans most at risk from these dogs are their owners and their families. Outside of the people that they share homes with these dogs are massively dangerous to other dogs, and that's not widely reported on. No matter how much you love and care for your dog, if one of these things tears yours to pieces it's no big deal, no newspaper stories, no one cares. Honestly as someone who has owns Rottweilers, German shepherds etc, having an XL Bully is akin to owning a bear or lion, they are strong to the point that no one has any control over them. Every one of them needs to be euthanised, end of

Totally agree with this . I met a man in a pub once bragging that he had a dog that's bite was as powerful as a lions... why do you own one then? I later found out he lived in a small bedsit with that huge beast and the dog was couped up all the time, I'm waiting to hear about the day that dog turns

My next door neighbour has one. She muzzles it etc in the rare occasions I've seen her walk it

I'm terrified it will escape and attack ds. I hear her shouting sometimes through the wall to "get down" and I'm scared I'll hear it attack her 1 day too.

HettieBettyBoo · 11/08/2024 00:23

I’ve been on the receiving end of one of these bastard dogs. It killed one of our dogs. Frankly I’d euthanise them all. And before the land hippo or velvet hippo brigade arrive, these things shouldn’t be allowed to walk in public muzzled or not imo. Half the owners can’t control them and why anyone would want to own this non breed is beyond my comprehension. When the restrictions were introduced in England the “heroes” were driving them north of the border to “save them” they really didn’t save them, they gave them to any fucker who’d take them. Then the restrictions were announced in Scotland, that took the wind out of the sails of those “rescues” bringing them here. YANBU. I’m absolutely sick of hearing these dogs are no risk from their stupid owners.

Ilovemyfreedom · 11/08/2024 00:25

Has anyone heard the saying ' there are no bad dogs, just bad owners'?
Any dog can be dangerous if they are mishandled. It's just that some of the bigger ones are very strong and can cause a lot of damage. Plus I find it's usually the smaller dogs who have very bad attitudes.

Hello I'm not entirely sure how it all ended I have been wondering the same thing myself , I'll ask more questions to my friend soon

Yet still not enough is being done. I cannot understand the cult of pitbull people claim the pitbulls deserve a chance. What about the innocent dogs?!

Yes, and it is a stupid saying, and blatantly untrue.

Oh piss off... we all know the owners are mainly irresponsible in these situations however a bad owner of a chihuahua and a bad owner of an xl bully have very different outcomes ....a child would survive the attack from a chihuahua yes??? It probably wouldnt survive the attack from an xl bully .... so it has alot to do with the breed doesnt it? Some of you xl bully lovers are thick as two short planks

It happened. Are u implying it didnt? Cornwall live and the police do not need witnesses the owner ran out and couldnt control his own dog, he admitted fault. The 4 men and women were the witnesses if need be and the elderly lady! Its hurrendous... but not odd. The only strange thing is that they havent yet reported it? And I'm really not sure why? Maybe they will over the next few days.

I'm very sorry to hear about one of your dogs being killed. That must of been awful for you , I agree with most owners cannot handle them. I saw a small 20 year old looking girl trying to walk one recently and it was pulling her up the road , she just looked utterly stupid

Ignore the breed a moment.

We're the owners good, responsible people? I'm guessing not. People are a huge part of all problems.

🙄

I'm not a particular fan of xl bully's actually. I'm trying to see things fairly and not tar all dogs with the same brush.
Pitbulls get a bad rep too but I've known some lovely pitbulls.
I just think it needs run like gun control where responsible people with valid rationale and training get to keep them.

WELL SAID👏
I am so tired of the 'any dog can maul someone to death' mantra
Mind you you are wrong about this part:
'Some of you xl bully lovers are thick as two short planks'
It's not just some of them!
