Former Director of Public Prosecutions. Now PM.
Following the 'civil unrest' last week, several perpetrators have been not only arrested and jailed, but publicly named and shamed, the speed of which I have never seen before.
Our PM clearly knows the right people to get things rolling quickly.
This, combined with the anti racism protestors, gives me a glimmer of hope for the future. I feel in safe(ish) hands with Keir.AIBU?

Can someone actually please define fascism because different posters seem to have different views on what it is?

(I which you'll find out why the statement "Nothing could be more fascist than censorship" is so ludicrously wrong).

There were, and anyone who comes on this thread and claims that those of us who approve of the government's handling of the riots is aggressive will get the be same comment from me. If you comment on policy rather than people, you will be taken seriously. If you persist in cheap slurs, you will be challenged, as will anyone else.

You aren't stupid. You know full well that KS works as hard as any Prime Minister, so one can only assume that a cheap shot is all you've got.

How have I come across as being aggressive over the handling of the riots, I actually agreed with you on another thread at how Labour had handled the riots and said as such, I also agreed with you on another point, can't remember what it was now.

But I don't agree with how they have gone about the winter fuel allowance and if me saying that means in your view that I'm aggressive, well there's not much I can say about that. You're entitled to your view.

I am English and it means both. Slang evolves.

pissed - to be angry
pissed - to be drunk

www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=pissed

In the UK, "pissed" = drunk. The end.

Even the link you've quoted says "pissed" for annoyed is an Americanism, but in any case why on earth would urbandictionary be thought of as a reputable source? Anyone can add anything to it. 😂

It isn't about what you and I agree with - it's about the way you and others sneer about KS in terms of personal attacks. If you kept your posts to policy issues, we could agree, as indeed we have done. However, sneering about someone who has cancelled holidays and attended every COBRA meeting just because he once said he would try to maintain family life is low. I would hope you are better than that.

And if you want to point out that Labour supporters have attacked Tory politicians, I would like you to evidence where we have said things that are not true.

Boris is a liar - proven that he lied to Parliament.
Boris committed illegal acts - his prorogation of Parliament was deemed illegal.
Liz Truss was incompetent - manifestly true, millions of people are still paying more for their mortgages because of her.
Priti Patel lacks integrity - she was sacked for going behind Parliament's back with a deal with Israel
Boris Johnson is incompetent - Nazanina Zaghari-Radcliffe could tell you all about that.

No doubt our current government will do things wrong - when they do, go for it. But to go for the personal attack four weeks in is pathetic, and it seems to be all that disgruntles Tories are capable of right now.

Basically, the stand out charactistic is that strength is good a weakness is contemptible.

In this way it is contrary to pretty much every other European political philosophy, across the left / right spectrum, as it is not based on a fundamental Christian conceit of the humbleness of Jesus.

Therefore, other vicious, authoritarian regimes like Stalinism are fundamentally different, as facsism doesn't claim it's moral authority derives from a concern for the weak and powerless.

Hold on, what did I say that wasn't true, I said the meeting was held on Thursday night (true) and that Starmer doesn't work after 5pm on a Friday (true as he was the one who said this).

But your claim about Starmer is not true. He said he would aim to not work after 6pm on a Friday barring exceptional weeks. What have we had if not exceptional weeks? I'd be willing to bet that Starmer has been working Friday nights and weekends lately.

That aside, Prime Ministers are also human beings and have the same rights to family life that the rest of us do. The British have a weird presenteeism fetish - if being physically at work were the major driver of productivity in the world, we'd be the most productive nation on the planet. Hint: we're not.

I'd much rather KS worked smarter rather than harder.

It's so risible for a Tory supporter to be trying to make a criticism out of that, when someone who knew Johnson very well said he'd never known him to do more than 2 days work in a week. And that wasn't when he was PM - that was when he was editor of the Spectator.

someone who has cancelled holidays and attended every COBRA meeting

Starmer hasn't attended every COBRA meeting since he became PM - he's missed at least one (the Global IT meltdown).

Well, the last government was considerably less diligent and hardworking than the one we have now - remember Dominic Raab's 'The beach was closed' while Afghanistan burned? Boris Johnson not attending COBRA meetings (when KS cancelled his holiday to attend!). The contrast is stark, and people are allowed to point that out.

When Raab and others were on holiday, Boris Johnson came back from his holiday after one day to chair a COBRA meeting on a Sunday afternoon (having already chaired a COBRA meeting on the Friday) - Starmer waited until Monday morning to chair his COBRA meeting and was criticised in the Sunday press for not holding one sooner.

cardibach · 10/08/2024 22:14

Anyone trying to suggest Johnson was more diligent than Starmer is either deeply unserious or deluding themselves.

Some of the recent riotous behaviour has mirrored the riotous behaviour of the Bullingdon thugs that included Johnson, Cameron. if Johnson was still in position he'd be cosying up to Farage and talking peppa pig drivel instead of acting to sort the mess out. Well done Starmer!

Lonelycrab · 10/08/2024 22:40

So are we on cobra meeting precise timing minutiae now to prove that the former disgraced and ridiculed PM is superior somehow because (not to forget that Johnson got sacked because he didn’t understand his duty was not to hold parties while the whole country was in lockdown.. never mind that!) he got to a cobra meeting 12 hours before KS did?

lol.

StoneofDestiny · 10/08/2024 22:53

Johnson missed 5 consecutive emergency Cobra COVID meetings.

Clearly had better things to do while citizens died

One thing I noticed from the Partygate reports was that Johnson barely had 15 minutes to spare to attend any of the gatherings. And on several occasions it was noted that he was working in his Number 10 office until shortly before 10pm and 8pm.

BeachParty · 10/08/2024 22:56

How are people still defending Johnson and Partygate 🤣

The Cobra meetings he missed were in January and February. You are in Scotland - Nicola Sturgeon missed six emergency coronavirus Cobra meetings. They both thought Covid would be like swine flu and believed in British exceptionalism when it came to the NHS.

I thought that was the press office - not the PM's office.

How naive are you!

As I said above, a well known newspaper editor who knew Johnson's whole career said he'd never known him to do more than 2 days work in a week. And that wasn't when he was PM - that was when he was editor of the Spectator.

Workers in No:10 said he would appear just before lunch, walk around, briefly looking at their screens, saying "Jolly good, carry on!" before disappearing for the rest of the day. Certainly the laziest, biggest skiver of any UK prime minister.

DdraigGoch · 11/08/2024 00:21

There would have been a swift response to the riots no matter who was in government. We've been here before.

Kemi Badenoch hasn’t uttered a single comment about the riots yet, she is the leading candidate for TP leader, yet she hasn’t even come out and condemned them as far as I can see.

And then there’s the fact that the riots were (in many people’s opinion) built on the back of the last govts xenophobic and divisive rhetoric for the last decade. This didn’t happen in a vacuum, so I don’t think you can say all govt are equal here. This isn’t the situation we had in 2011.
