So so overwhelmed ☹️☹️

Sorry posting for traffic. I need motivation and well god knows what else.

My mental health is rock bottom. I am a hoarder. I live in absolute squalor.

Today is the day I need to blast through the clutter. The junk. The piles of clothes. The piles of rubbish. The empty packaging and empty boxes. Empty cups. Some mouldy. I know how gross this is.

I am overwhelmed I’ve allowed it to get to this point. I can’t see my floors. Dust is everywhere. No wonder I’m constantly run down and have allergies.

It’s all m fault. Everything is filthy. I’m so ashamed and embarrassed.

It’s just me though. No kids. No pets. No partner. So im not putting anyone else through this hell. My friends don’t know. They’ve never seen it.

I’ve made a start. I’ve almost filled a roll of bin liners up to take to the tip. Cardboard boxes ready to be ripped up for the recycling box. I can now see a fraction of my wooden floor.

But by God. It’s hard. So hard. This is just a quick break to write this and have a drink. (Of tea) now I’ll be back to it and hopefully finish one room by this evening.

I don’t even know why I’ve posted here. But if you’re this far, thanks for reading.

Oh wow thank you so so much everyone. I wasn’t expecting so many nice comments so soon.

I’m trying not to get side tracked, but throughout the rubbish I’ve found a wedding invitation to a friends wedding which was just over 2 years ago, and for some reason got me emotional. Had to just stop and cry for 5 minutes. It’s been bad for over 2 years. 2 fucking years I’ve allowed myself to suffer and live in filth.

Right back to it. I’m determined to have my bedroom finished so atleast tonight I can treat myself to fresh bedding, fresh PJs and washed hair as I am covered in dust, cobwebs and stink.

I can’t thank you all enough for the encouragement.

I think the invite was a little ‘glimmer’. It was to help you get through the day. Dot focus on hoe bad things have got but how well you are doing. I’m just imagining you this evening with your room much better and clean covers, that will be a massive help towards the rest of it x

FlamingoQueen · 09/08/2024 15:45

It’s awesome that you’ve taken the first step. It can only get better! Keep us updated please x

LemonadeQueen · 09/08/2024 15:45

Well done! I always say a little bit of progress is still an achievement!!!
You made a decision to start it and did it. Don't underestimate actually doing it not just saying it.

semideponent · 09/08/2024 15:47

Take a photo of the bin liners you've filled so you can see your achievement and have some good feelings.

Have you got some good music to listen to while you crack on?

I'm so impressed you made a start.

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 09/08/2024 15:47

Well done OP!!! You’ve made a brilliant start and also shared with us - both great steps as it’s shows you want to let someone in.
Try not to feel overwhelmed about letting ‘stuff’ go - the mental health benefits of living with far less stuff outweigh anything you own. I had to sort through an awful lot a few years ago - I know not the same thing - but I honestly don’t miss one thing I got rid of. All the memories I need are filed in my memory.
Fresh PJs, fresh sheets and a warm shower are the best reward and a signpost for your future.
Also agree with PP - if you can afford a cleaner, get one, to help you manage in the future.
All the replies have been so encouraging - enjoy your lovely fresh bed and sleep well OP ✔️

ThatFunFinch · 09/08/2024 15:49

Well done and do not be ashamed, there are many people in your position and remember there are people out there to help.

if you let someone help you, it’ll get done so much quicker and it will improve your mental health and allow you to think positively about the future.

we all need help in life, never be afraid to ask! There are even charities who support people in hoarding situations

Such a brilliant way to reward yourself for the physical and emotional work you're doing.

You’ve done brilliantly to make the progress you have. This is a huge act of self love. You deserve a clean, safe space.

Don’t feel disheartened if it doesn’t all get done on your planned timeline. Keep chipping away, some every day until it’s manageable.

Lemonyfuckit · 09/08/2024 15:50

Well done OP! Making a start is the hardest part and you've done that now.

If it starts feeling overwhelming chunk it down into smaller goals - just finish say one more cupboard today, another one tomorrow etc.

You've got this!

BloodandGlitter · 09/08/2024 15:50

Every single person on this thread is proud of you OP!
You've got a whole gang of cheerleaders.

Bobbotgegrinch · 09/08/2024 15:51

Bloody well done so far @SoEffingOverwhelmed

One bit of advice is that when at some point you lose the momentum, that doesn't mean you've failed.

I'm on a healthy eating kick. I've been trying to do this for years, but every time I get a few days in, maybe a couple of weeks. I cave in and eat a bunch of crap, and then wake up the next day thinking "Eh, fuck it I've failed" and give up until the next time I try again.

This time has been different. As per usual, a week in I caved and ordered a dominos. But this time I didn't give up. I woke up and thought "OK, yesterday was a write-off, but that doesn't mean today has to be".

So at some point you will flag, you'll have a day where you don't get as much done, or nothing at all. And you'll wake up the next day feeling shitty about it and thinking you may as well give up. Don't. Just get up and do 10 minutes, and then if you feel like it do 10 minutes more.

localnotail · 09/08/2024 15:51

Well done OP! Keep going. I know its hard, and I have a lot of respect for you!

Comparisonisthethiefofjoy11 · 09/08/2024 15:52

Keep going op, you've made a great start 👍

FeralNun · 09/08/2024 15:53

You’ve done brilliantly, OP. Brilliantly.

Reward and rest, then go again (without exhausting yourself). Use this thread as your motivation, but if you slide a bit in the future, don’t be discouraged from coming back. We understand and are on your side!

Insidelaurashead · 09/08/2024 15:54

OP you're doing amazingly. And that treat of fresh clean bedding after a nice shower with freshly washed hair, will feel so good. You will be physically knackered and maybe mentally too, but you will have done so much today-this is fantastic

Scorchio84 · 09/08/2024 15:55

You've done the hardest part by starting, you deserve to live in a tidy home, it's like your home is a manifestation of your mind, like others have said just keep going

CountessWindyBottom · 09/08/2024 15:55

Well done @SoEffingOverwhelmed. It's great that you are motivated to do this.

A great ADHD hack, when you're feeling overwhelmed but know you need to tackle a task, is to set a timer for 20-minutes and do as much as you can withing that short space of time. It's amazing what can be achieved!

You are going to feel so amazing when it is completed. And I can understand that you are emotional. Some part of you may feel you are not worthy or deserving of living in a comfy home so there is a lot to 'let go of' besides the clutter.

Please keep us posted and good luck 💕

ginandheels · 09/08/2024 15:55

So impressed by your strength, resolution, focus and determination! Keep going - you are changing your life and inspiring others too.

BlackFriYay · 09/08/2024 15:56

Well done OP, you are going to feel so much satisfaction when you finish your bedroom today and take a step back to admire it. I'm thrilled for you.

You have motivated me to get off my backside and tidy up today. I'm not a horder but do have ADHD and have a tendency to let things slip.

Keep us posted, you've got this 🙂

Projectme · 09/08/2024 15:56

Yay for you OP!!! You've done an amazing job in just starting it. Ah I'm so chuffed for you

Dreamiesarecatcrack · 09/08/2024 15:56

Me too OP, I have 1 week to sort it before my gas safety check, it's disgusting and I have no idea where to start. I'm envious and proud of you in equal parts, keep going, you're definitely not alone Flowers

VibeVanguard · 09/08/2024 15:57

OP you are an inspiration. Thank you.

I've been feeling utterly overwhelmed too. I have a mountain of life admin to get through and I was crumpled up in tears. Thought I'd procrastinate distract myself with MN and you've given me the motivation I needed to get on with a few of my tasks.
🙌

RB68 · 09/08/2024 15:59

Amazing a whole roll of bin bags- that will make a big difference, well done. You will deserve your clean bed and clean at the end of the day. Leave yourself some energy for tomorrow. CAn you order a skip instead of tip runs? It might help make a massive dent in things to keep you inspired. Good Luck.

oakleaffy · 09/08/2024 15:59
