Looks like a lipoma. I have one on my arm which I HATE as it’s unsightly but I can’t have it removed on the NHS as it’s cosmetic.

Definitely keep the appointment but try not to worry!

Laura992 · 05/08/2024 01:25

If it's soft and squishy it's likely a lipoma, a collection of fat cells. A GP should recognize this as well and likely referred you to Dermatology for possible removal. If it is a lipoma, sometimes not removed unless bothersome or very unsightly. Usually, but not always of course, more dangerous lumps (cancer) are very hard. My husband has a lipoma under his arm on chest wall, been there for 20 years. Looks very much like this.
Keep the appointment and take a deep breath!

Hi, I have a lipoma in exactly the same place, it's pretty common. If its painless, soft and squishy, and reasonably moveable, its very likely a lipoma but do still book a GP visit.
They can tell in about 5 seconds by running an ultrasound over it to see if it is fat or not.
The may take a needle biopsy to check some cells under the microscope.

My DH has something similar on his back, further up his spine. He's had it since childhood.

I think its probably fatty cells. My db got one on the side of his head. He eventually had it removed due to us worrying and going on at him. It was totally benign, just scary looking.

Hope all goes well bud please know it's probably harmless.

HauntedbyMagpies · 05/08/2024 02:00

My Mum's dog is covered in these and the vet said that in both animals and humans the general rule of thumb, is that if squishy & non-painful, then it's almost certainly harmless.

Yes it looks pretty similar. I just remembered he has another one on his leg too. He's had them both since he was a child and he's not bothered by them at all.

Try not to worry and avoid looking on Google to try and diagnose what it is.

HeartandSeoul · 05/08/2024 02:23

I watch a lot of Dr Pimple Popper, and I agree with others about it looking like a lipoma. I know we always say to avoid googling during these times, but it may be worth looking up images of lipomas on the back. I just did, and there were a number that looked just like your son’s.

I know it is easy to say, but please try not to worry.

My sister had one.
My Nana told her to hit it with a Bible.
Nana was born in 1889, so she had a lot of “medical advice.”
Doctor removed it, it was nothing, just a bunch of fatty stuff.
Deep breaths, @kaylacheyenne.
Hit it with a Bible.

3 or 4 years ago my son had similar raised lumps along his spine appear almost overnight. The doctor thought it was viral. They disappeared about a week later and he has been fine ever since. Hope all turns out well for your son.

@kaylacheyenne keep us informed. We'll be here . Fingers crossed 💚
@DreamTheMoors nice one 😀

Elisheva · 05/08/2024 03:48

Don’t hit it with a Bible 🙄. That advice was for ganglion cysts, not lipomas, and is somewhat out of date. You’ll just hurt him.

Purpleyellow98 · 05/08/2024 04:07

Please don't hit it with a Bible or anything else for that matter.
Hope all the responses put your mind at ease for now and you dont need to wait too long to be seen.

Fallopiantuba · 05/08/2024 04:08

Oh poor you. I can understand your concern.

Obviously I can’t diagnose, but my husband has a few of these soft lumps on his back and legs. They’re lipomas and he says he’s been getting them since childhood. They don’t bother him at all.

On a seperate note, I noticed my son had a hard but moveable lump on his chest when he was about a year old. He was referred and we were told it was nothing to worry about. It’s still there but tiny now. He’s 11-years-old.

Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know!)
