Please don't hit it with a Bible or anything else for that matter.
Hope all the responses put your mind at ease for now and you dont need to wait too long to be seen.

Oh poor you. I can understand your concern.

Obviously I can’t diagnose, but my husband has a few of these soft lumps on his back and legs. They’re lipomas and he says he’s been getting them since childhood. They don’t bother him at all.

On a seperate note, I noticed my son had a hard but moveable lump on his chest when he was about a year old. He was referred and we were told it was nothing to worry about. It’s still there but tiny now. He’s 11-years-old.

Try not to worry (easier said than done, I know!)

Is it weird I asked to see what they look like for peace of mind? Idk if I'll ever feel peace of mind until we go in but I'm just tryna find similar ppl going thru this that's why I even posted and it's helped a bit

The NHS is at its best when taking care of children. Our son had something similar (not the same) and he had so much medical care and attention and next to no waiting around. Our experience was: assessment and referral to a dermatologist by paediatricians, a meeting with a paediatric dermatology nurse, a consultation with a dermatologist who then referred for medical photography and an ultrasound performed by a paediatrician. Then back to the dermatologist for treatment. I won't specify the treatment as I don't want to tell you something not relevant but rest assured there's lots of incredibly well qualified people ready to help him and they've seen it all before.

I have just had a golf ball sized lipoma removed from my neck. I had to pay privately and saved up for a year to pay for it but I couldn't bear looking at it. The hospital had done a needle biopsy and as it was only fat cells said it was cosmetic!

blobby10 · 05/08/2024 06:11

I had one on my shoulder - i could almost lift it up at one point! Appeared almost overnight - lucky enough to have private medical insurance so had it removed

kaylacheyenne · 05/08/2024 02:41

I'll try tht Ty xx

Don't hit him with a Bible.

That was for ganglyons (is that the correct spelling, a fellow pedant will tell me)

That advice was because a) a visit to a doctor was expensive and b) the heaviest flat object that most people had in their homes was the family bible.

LBFseBrom · 05/08/2024 06:33

I am sorry for your worry, Kayla. I am not a medic but agree with others, it does look like a lipoma. Such things are quite common as are disc protrusions which are mainly cartilage.

Your doctor will reassure you both and it can be dealt with. I wish you both good luck, and peace. It's natural to be worried.

SanctusInDistress · 05/08/2024 06:58

My son has one on the back of his head, and I freaked out like you wouldn’t believe it. He’s now 15 and it’s still there and gp said nothing to worry about. Do get him checked out for piece of mind but it is likely nothing like you are imagining.

Fraaahnces · 05/08/2024 07:13

Please try not to panic. I imagine if they thought it was something more sinister they would have referred you to an oncologist, not a dermatologist.

BunnyLake · 05/08/2024 07:17

HauntedbyMagpies · 05/08/2024 02:00

My Mum's dog is covered in these and the vet said that in both animals and humans the general rule of thumb, is that if squishy & non-painful, then it's almost certainly harmless.

This must be what my dog has (vet said fatty lumps, nothing to worry about).

Hope you feel a bit more reassured after the responses. Good luck for your son at the appt.

DustyLee123 · 05/08/2024 07:35

My sister has a lipoma on her lower spine, and mum’s elderly dog has one too.

Regards not using Google - I understand why this advice is often given, but I couldn't disagree more. Yes, you can end up down rabbit holes, but it's likely to point to excellent medical resources such as the Mayo clinic and livestrong. These are, in my opinion, somewhat better sources of information than randoms on mumsnet (no disrespect mumsnet).

Oddly enough, Google saved my life when my urologist totally misdiagnosed something - or at least the websites it pointed me did.

Currently, I have a rare and complicated bone marrow condition. Without internet resources I'd not have anything like the understanding I currently have. I know that your specialist should be your first port of call, but (a) they're often busy, (b) don't necessarily communicate at a simple level, and (c) you might not be in a mental state to take things in effectively when you've just been given bad news.

I also think if your in pre-diagnosis stage (like with the OPs child); then it's quite good to have a few ideas of what it might be so that you can work out pertinent questions in advance.

My sister had one.
My Nana told her to hit it with a Bible.
Nana was born in 1889, so she had a lot of “medical advice.”
Doctor removed it, it was nothing, just a bunch of fatty stuff.
Deep breaths, @kaylacheyenne.
Hit it with a Bible.

That’s a ganglion on the hand that used to be clobbered with a bible!!!

OP, please don’t hit it. I’m sure @DreamTheMoors isn’t serious.

Zoezoo · 05/08/2024 07:58

My brother had one many years ago, on the spine but a bit lower. I worked in a hospital at the time and a consultant friend checked it for me - completely normal! Hopefully your dermatologist appointment is just to confirm the same.

Sixtygoingonthirty · 05/08/2024 07:59

Elisheva · 05/08/2024 03:48

Don’t hit it with a Bible 🙄. That advice was for ganglion cysts, not lipomas, and is somewhat out of date. You’ll just hurt him.

My sister had a ganglion on her wrist. She was given the same advice about hitting it with a bible, but she didn’t have a bible. The heaviest hardback book she had was Gary Barlow’s autobiography - she hit it and it dispersed. I asked her, as you hit it did you say ‘take that!’? True story!!

Disclaimer …. OP - it’s not a ganglion, do not hit it with a bible or any other hard book!!

UtterlyOtterly · 05/08/2024 08:02

My husband has had one on his back fo about 30 years, it looks exactly like your son's.

Anecdotaly, I wonder if they are more common in males than females, judging from the replies here.

Try not to worry OP. It's natural to worry but is very likely to be harmless. I hope you get professional reassurance soon.

ApricotCrush · 05/08/2024 08:17

To add to all the other posts, yes, this looks like a lipoma. My DH has one on his back just like this. He’s had it for years and there is no need for it to be removed unless it bothers your son.

Do not hit it with anything. Ffs some of the ‘medical’ advice given on here is downright dangerous.

Phoebefail · 05/08/2024 09:07

I had one on my back. No sensation from it for years. Then it grew, the GP at the time liked to do small ops. Very handy. Local anaesthetic swab I think. and it was out in 5 mins.
Sent for analysis, No trouble, wound healed quickly.

kaylacheyenne · 05/08/2024 14:13

Ty everyone.. I am not hitting my two year old with a bible... haha. Grin every one has been so kind and helped me a lot ...

kaylacheyenne · 05/08/2024 14:15

@ApricotCrush can I pls see a pic of it? It doesn't bother him at all? I'm still going to be taking him in and maybe demanding an ultrasound if they just look and poke with the ur e finger bc that's what the dr did and it wasn't reassuring.

I' am not hitting my child with a bible haha 😄😄

OP posts:
ApricotCrush · 05/08/2024 14:52

He’s away at the moment but it doesn’t trouble him at all. It’s about the size of an egg and in the same place as your son’s. His GP just felt it and pushed it around before declaring it harmless. This was nearly 20 years ago. Look at Google images but be warned some of them are a bit gruesome.

I’m sure the dermatologist will be able to reassure you.

kaylacheyenne · 05/08/2024 14:57

@ApricotCrush thank you so much
