Current riots

Sorry this is probably the millionth thread about this and apologies for posting on aibu but here are my questions about this riot and feel free to widen my horizon:

  1. Why has the tabloids suddenly taken a turn in their reporting? Didn't they encourage this situation from the start and in general creating division and hatred on a daily basis up until now?

  2. Why are they reporting these people as thugs and mobs now after publishing daily hatred to stir things up and that has prepared and encouraged them for what's happening today? Are the editors now scared that they will be held accountable if they continued stirring?

  3. Why are our politicians silent about this (apologies if they have condemned it, I don't use x/twitter) particularly the ones like Suella and Priti Patel and Nigel Farage who have actively worked hand in hand to create this situation again a bit like show. Create a scenario, rehearse with them, dress them up for their roles and put them on stage and suddenly back off once the lights come on and the show starts. Shouldn't the directors of this show which are of course the tabloid editors and our politicians be held accountable for this shit show?

There are plenty more things I want to add but cannot process it right now but I hope this thread creates a civilised discussion. I will probably dip in and out as I finish tending to my lo's needs, so please don't think Ive left the discussion. Btw, I am so ashamed of these people, so ashamed to call myself British.

This has nothing to do with the killings of the 3 innocent girls. This is mostly people we see out and about who are projecting their life failures living as rejects in our society that have been failed by austerity, poverty, addictions, generational trauma and lack of opportunities. As a non white British person, I believe these people weren't racist, they became racist by our leaders and media and they were used by them for their own agenda.

I fear for myself, my children and many others who are in the same situation scared to go out who are law abiding citizens. I can see the bigger picture and I know it's not going to work on what they have actively worked on to create division.

You are right, it has nothing to do with the terrible events in Stockport.
Where were the rioters when a white ex army man slaughtered a mum and her 2 daughters recently with a cross bow?

What about Bolton? Keir keeps mentioning right wing thuggery, I wonder if he will talk about pockets of this happening like in Blackburn as well or will it continue to be two tier policing.

"Two tier policing". Here we go again.

Priti Patel has made a statement condemning the riots.

ll09sm · 04/08/2024 17:38

Riots rarely have anything to do with the trigger. That’s not news.

The people rioting are just out having what they think is a good time. Not sure if they could even articulate what they are rooting for. However, there is a great number of people who sympathise with the sentiment that unctontrolled immigration has been bad for the country. A vast majority of those people are not rioting. But branding them far right is both lazy and akin to sticking your head int he sand. Calling people names rarely makes the problem go away. Remember the ‘basket of deplorables’?

Hand wringing and pearl clutching about rioters not displaying British values doesn’t achieve anything. Most people know and agree with that. But it is still a fact that vast swathes of the country are against mass immigration. Millions voted Tory for 14 years to point this out, though the Tories did the opposite to what they promised. Millions voted Brexit to voice it. They didn’t riot then, and aren’t rioting now. Ignoring them and calling then names is not only stupid, it’s dangerous.

Nothing happened in Stockport, it was Southport.

lemonmeringueno3 · 04/08/2024 17:42

Every protestor interviewed has given a different reason for it. They can't articulate why they're there. Watching them try to set a hotel housing migrants on fire was exceptionally shocking. I think the police are doing an incredible job, I'd have had the water cannons out by now.

JackRabbitSlim · 04/08/2024 17:42

It's ironic if they're bleating about immigration causing financial issues when they voted for Brexit.
Quite right that they can't be ignored, as many as possible need to be arrested and charged, which will perhaps serve as a deterrent to others.
The government should absolutely not bow down to thugs. If they're incapable of raising an issue without violence, racism and rioting, they don't deserve a say until they can articulate their views appropriately.

Ponoka7 · 04/08/2024 17:43

The Police inflamed the situation in Liverpool. The two groups shouldn't have been allowed to clash around the water front. Elsewhere in Liverpool it was an excuse to vandalise and steal.

lemonmeringueno3 · 04/08/2024 17:46

They are just small, inconsequential people who feel temporarily powerful as they chuck a brick at a policeman. It will fizzle out as previous riots have done. They don't speak for the vast majority and nobody wants a country run by far right thuggery.

mitogoshi · 04/08/2024 17:46

Unfortunately from time to time, usually in dry weather, bored people seem to find a reason to be disruptive, the focus alters but ultimately it's pure thuggery for thuggery's sake, generally those taking part barely know why they are there. It isn't to do with children being killed, it's just violence. The best "cure" is heavy rain!

It's been a few years since widespread riots but it's certainly not new. Hopefully the weather will turn and they will go back to work! Unlike in years gone by though technology has improved and they are likely to be identified on cctv

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/08/2024 17:48

Sorry to disappoint you, but they were always racist.

They were the racist pricks at school who picked on the quiet kid, they glowered at the assertive one, they didn't invite them to birthday parties and they called the non racist kids variations on a theme of -lover. They were the ones who behaved worst of all for teachers of ethnic minorities, would complain they couldn't understand what they said, had their Mums calling in about detentions saying 'She's just got it in for my son'.

They were arseholes to shopkeepers, takeaway staff, bus drivers, members of the public, shoving kids who didn't know them out of their way.

They got jobs where sharing racist jokes was acceptable and went out at the weekend and would have a go at anybody who wasn't like them on the basis of their ethnicity. If they were out of work, they'd complain about the woman at the Job Centre, the doctor who wouldn't sign them off sick, the bloke who wouldn't give them beer and fags on tick, that they can't get a job because of <insert ethnicity/Nationality/rough continent here> taking the jobs. They'd complain about housing, neighbours, everything.

When they had kids, they'd repeat it all over again, teaching their kids the same racism, claiming that <insert ethnicity/Nationality/rough continent here> was the reason why they didn't have a bigger house, a council house instead of a council flat, more money, a big car, a better dog, more trainers, better holidays, any failure in their lives wasn't their own personal failing but the fault of others deliberately targeting them, never because those others were smarter/hardworking/talented/nicer/just plain lucky - success of others was a direct attack upon them.

What's different is that, thanks to the internet and social media, it's easier for them to find more like them, to whip them up into a frenzy, to promise them the protection of numbers, that the police can't possibly catch them all like they were a batch of defective Pokemon. Used to be that they had to find one another from sport, go to the pub, follow the NF graffiti to meetings or just know one another from school/work. It doesn't have to be filtered and disseminated down from an opportunist leader, through the ranks and out to the scavengers - one tweet of lies will reach the bottom feeders and they'll jump to it.

Yup! Too much immigration - it's gone on uncontrolled for 20 years.

RafaistheKingofClay · 04/08/2024 17:52

Patel has made a statement, but other than that the answer to a lot of your questions is that inciting violence is a criminal offence so there is going to be a lot of back tracking from the likes of Farage (who has gone unusually silent on Twitter), the express, Mail and Telegraph to avoid anything that looks like it might get them prosecuted.

BeansOnToast32 · 04/08/2024 17:53

It's disgusting. 😡

The football season starts next weekend so that'll hopefully give the thugs something else to focus on!

Could do with a good downpour of rain to clear the street too. I doubt they'd be outside if it was pissing it down.

I've just read an account in the Echo, from someone who ended up (accidentally) spending time with both sides, and she seemed to think the police did a good job despite having a barrage of things thrown at them. In other cities, groups 'met' but were separated by a wall of police so maybe this is a strategy. I wasn't there so don't know. I'm sure there'll be lots of analysis in coming days.

LittleLlama · 04/08/2024 17:56

I am also annoyed at how these “riots” have overshadowed Southport. I want to know how the children/adults who were injured are doing. What is going to be done to reduce violent crime against women/girls? But that is not the focus of in the media.

ISawAMouse · 04/08/2024 17:59

I personally think we have become pretty much a lawless society in Britain. This kind of thug culture has been allowed to thrive. They know nothing much is going to happen to them. I read there are going to be 24 hour courts to deal with these rioters, but no doubt they will just be queuing up to get a slap on the wrist and nothing else.
Where I live drug dealing is rife and done in the open infront of police cars, people this way inclined do not care because they know nothing much will be done to stop them.
I dread to think where it’s all going to end.
I don’t completely believe they are rioting because of immigration laws, they are doing it more because they can. I saw photos of the rioters filming themselves laughing, no doubt plastered over their social media. This country has become a joke.

Saw a photo shared by a parenting blogger of the far-right presence in Sheffield. All of five men with one flag! Dwarfed by the counter-protest.

Certainly looks that way. They have nothing to lose.

ExtraOnions · 04/08/2024 18:13

There is no Two Tier Policing - that’s a right-wing Dog Whistle…

Papers & Social Media types are back-peddling, as they know that they can be charge with inciting or conspiracy.

The people involved will be treated the same as the London rioters… they will be crying in the dock as they are sent to prison.

Thing is they raise their heads every few years … Mosleys lot, NF, BNP, EDL .. kick off for a bit, then disappear again

Leavetheminthebowl · 04/08/2024 18:22

It's basically mob mentality. Some idiots start rioting, other idiots join in. It'll be the same arseholes who love a punch up down the pub or who like to kick off after the football and then go home and punch their wives.

Who knows why these people are like this? A hundred different social reasons, I expect.

If we didn't have twitter/X then these people wouldn't have a forum in which to so loudly and clearly rally together. Elon Musk has a lot to answer for.

multicolouredbunting · 04/08/2024 18:25

Another thread about rioting from white British people. Nothing like this happened a few weeks ago with rioting in Leeds. Not a peep about machete fights in Southend. Videos from people calling themselves the Muslim defence league are flooding twitter with swords and machetes and other weapons openly in the street.
Are the media going to report any of the above as much as they have the apparent edl riots.
