Does getting ID’d annoy you

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 13:49

Got ID’d for a scratch card earlier and I didn’t have any ID on me so they wouldn’t serve me. I’m 30. Yet I am able to go on a night out and not get ID’d all night for alcohol

CaptainCabinets · 03/08/2024 14:55

It doesn’t usually, but it did when I tried to buy alcohol-free cider and they wouldn’t let me have it! I’m visibly very pregnant and really fancied a cold cider on a hot day. They happily let me have my bottles of bleach and drain unblocker, though!

I got in my car and had a very hormonal sulk about that cider all the way home Grin

@changedusernameforthis1 yeah I’ll probably feel sad when I’m older and no longer get ID’d anywhere😂

I'm 60 and still need to show proof of age if I order something like a kitchen knife from Amazon, or once I bought a Stanley knife in Wickes and they wanted to see proof of age. I think it's often down to their systems which require "proof" to be entered. Obviously a bar serving drinks can't "ID" every customer or there'd be queues outside onto the street. I carry my driving licence so it's no hassle, I don't give it a second thought really!

Fuck no!! It literally makes my day! 😁

Not happened for a few years but it’s great. When I was 20 it used to annoy me. It’s irritating if you need something and don’t have I.D on you though.

Yes this is ridiculous claiming someone in their 40’s looks anywhere near early 20s.

But, there are a lot of people who look 10yrs younger than they are easily, also on the flip side plenty who look 10yrs older than they are. I know people in both boats as well as those who look their age, or thereabouts.

Age is just a number!

Elphame · 03/08/2024 15:02

Yes it annoys me. I haven't been under 25 for over 30 years. Whilst I may not look my full age, there is no way I'll pass for 25 or younger, even with a hat and sunglasses on.

Amazon are the worst - they demanded ID for a set of diamond coated burrs the other day. They got to take them back.

The Gin Club couriers, however, are perfectly happy to just leave my monthly subscription box on the doorstep for me to fall over when I open the door.

Annoyed??? Bloody Hell it would be like all my birthdays and Christmases come at once! But I'm 45 😁

Someone will tell you off for swearing soon

Yeah I think it's the staff being cautious rather than them actually assuming a 38 year old is under 25

GraceUnderwire · 03/08/2024 15:09

I used to get asked for ID regularly up until I was 33. I had my first dc at 33, literally never got asked since. I don’t think it was even to do with that though, most people I know start showing signs of aging around that age. It didn’t annoy me, I just carried ID in my bag. And it really doesn’t bother me not getting asked now either, which I’m glad about. I know for some people, looking young is really important but it’s not a good way to be because it’s not something you can control. It can change very suddenly as well.

Yeah it's always a bit funny to see people try to out do each other

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 15:11

@summerdazey god you really got out of the wrong side of bed this morning🤣 I presume you either work somewhere where you have to ID people or you’ve never been ID’d and are a bit bitter. If none of those then I’m sorry you’re so bored on a Saturday afternoon nit picking at everything people say

Earlier this year our local brewery was having an event for its 10th anniversary of opening. Food trucks, bands outside etc. On entry if you paid X amount you got a wristband which entitled you to a couple of drinks and you got a glass to use.

I wasn't desperate to stay as it was boiling that day but thought I'd pop in, maybe have a drink and grab some interesting anniversary beers and take them home.

Got asked for ID at the gate (I'm 43 and look it) and I didn't have any. Was told I couldn't have my wrist band as policy was every person entering had to be checked as it was a family event. I was a bit short with the girl on the desk, who then said I was welcome to go and buy a beer from the actual bar inside, I just couldn't have one from outside as I didn't have ID. Totally bizarre.

LaMarschallin · 03/08/2024 17:27

Not been IDed but I was asked on a recent trip back from Belgium on Eurostar if I had "a little baby in there".
I didn't - I had an unwisely tight dress and a lot of Belgian beer, chocolate, waffles and moules frites "in there".
I said no, stupidly as it turned out as we would have been put in 1st class if I'd been pregnant.
Tried to take it as compliment as I'm in my 50s.

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 17:30

@LaMarschallin One of my mums friends told her to pass on congratulations to me for my pregnancy. Apparently she had seen me in Tesco’s👀 Wasn’t pregnant🤣

I tried to buy wine once, I had my toddler in her pushchair and I was 29yo. The co-op staff member refused to serve me, said I looked like I was 16yo. I had to go outside and get my husband in to buy it!

I had my wedding/engagement rings on and looked like a stressed mum of a toddler but apparently that made me look like a teenager.

I'm now 43, and never get asked for ID. Dammit!

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 17:35

@MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel Weirdly I have never been asked when I have make up on🤣 Great confidence boost🥴

Mrsttcno1 · 03/08/2024 17:35

I wouldn’t say it annoys me but it frustrates me especially now when I’m juggling my 4 month old baby in my arms with bags under my eyes the size of sleeping bags trying to wrestle my ID out of my purse. Nobody under 18 years old would look as bliddy exhausted as I do right now😂

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 17:38

@Mrsttcno1 When I’ve been asked when I’ve had my children are with me (they are 8 and 4) it makes me feel weird like I’ve asked some random kids outside to come in with me🤭

Years back a friend in her mid-20s, who never wears make-up, was stopped to answer a survey. They asked first if she was over 16.
Maybe they had to ask everyone but also maybe there's a lesson there.
I certainly wear a much lighter "face" these days Grin

StrawberrySquash · 03/08/2024 18:46

The law has got stupidly strict meaning staff have to impose OTT checks. But I blame the law, not them - baring those occasional stories you get about someone being denied a bottle of wine because they have their child with them.

Ooof!
Someone who I vaguely knew congratulated me on my pregnancy. I was pregnant but I said to him I wasn't just to teach him a lesson about making that assumption! He looked mortified Grin

It’s worth noting that in some US states they have to ID like spot checks – so every 10th person or whatever, regardless of them clearly not being under 21.

It can seem to some of us in our 30s rather ridiculous, but I wonder if it’s older employees mainly doing the IDing? Because when I see a 25yr old now I’m like 🤷‍♀️ 16? 17? I dunno?

Which states? I’m an American living in the US and I have never heard of this. I have lived in 5 different states in my lifetime, and visited many others for work and leisure and never seen or heard of this.
