Does getting ID’d annoy you

Got ID’d for a scratch card earlier and I didn’t have any ID on me so they wouldn’t serve me. I’m 30. Yet I am able to go on a night out and not get ID’d all night for alcohol

I'd be over the moon me Grin

Heliotropolis · 03/08/2024 19:24

It never happens but no, why would it? Shop staff are just doing their job and the fine for fucking it up is huge.

Skethylita · 03/08/2024 19:37

Well, I got ID'd at the grand old age of 38 today and the two 20-somethings at the till were both greatly astonished I wasn't a teen trying to buy a few cans of spray paint, it seems 😆I think people sometimes just find it hard to judge an age they're far away from.

She could get in trouble for that. Once asked you're not supposed to back down

I'm not sure about that.

What she is asking for is some kind of proof that you're old enough. Obviously a document is the easiest thing. But it can be anything that convinces the retailer.

I once (a long time ago when I was 23ish) got asked whether I could prove I was eighteen. I said, "Talk to me for five minutes."

He gave it about two minutes, actually. Then he sold me the wine.

You may say 'he'da been in trouble if you'd turned out to be seventeen'. But I wasn't, and he could tell I wasn't, and he was happy with that.

OldTinHat · 03/08/2024 19:48

I'm 52 and get asked - no doubt as a joke! I love it!

stormstormystormstorm · 03/08/2024 19:49

I love it!!! But I am 45

Which states? I’m an American living in the US and I have never heard of this. I have lived in 5 different states in my lifetime, and visited many others for work and leisure and never seen or heard of this.

My friend lives in Pittsburgh and works in a small supermarket and her manager asks her to do this. She said it wasn’t too unusual. 🤷‍♀️ I wouldn’t know.

Dusta · 03/08/2024 21:56

I get ID’d all the bloody time, and on the occasions I don’t, I want them to 😭

Stephy1886 · 03/08/2024 21:58

There will come a time where you don’t get asked for ID & you will miss thoes times where you did get asked 😂

C0rdeliaChase · 03/08/2024 22:17

I got annoyed when my dds were IDed when we went to see Deadpool. They're 21 and 17! Neither look under 15 FGS, they just don't wear tonnes of makeup. Luckily I had copies of their passports on my phone, but I'd have been so pissed off if they were turned away after spending 50 quid on the bloody tickets!

NewName24 · 03/08/2024 22:38

It's the lack of common sense that annoys me.
Doesn't affect me personally - I'm too old to get ID'd generally, but it is the fact that the Manager in the supermarket can't over-rule the cashier, even though they personally know the person; or the home delivery driver is not supposed to leave shopping that includes age restricted products without being shown ID, when the person that opens the door is clearly aged between 40 and 90, and so forth.

JohnTheRevelator · 03/08/2024 23:06

My DD is 41 and regularly gets asked for proof of age in her local supermarket when she buys alcohol.

HungryLittleCrocodile · 04/08/2024 00:04

Michellebops · 03/08/2024 14:01

47 and I still get asked for ID
I love it 😂

Yeah, I am 60 the year after next, and get ID'd all the time. It's soooo cute and funny. Makes my day. It's coz I have a cute little babyface! 👶 Large eyes, full lips, soft wavy blonde hair. Some people do struggle to believe I'm old enough to buy booze and scratchcards! 😆

It makes my day and is sooooo flattering. One man was stunned when he saw my wedding ring as he didn't think I was old enough to be married! And everyone I meet thinks my 2 almost-30-year-old daughters are my older sisters.

Saltedbutter · 04/08/2024 00:05

Only for when it’s for non-alcoholic beer as that’s clearly fucking ridiculous.

Ponderingwindow · 04/08/2024 00:16

I’m in the U.S. and in my 50s. I’ve been producing ID regularly since I turned 16.

griping about producing idea just makes their job even harder. The retail or office staff that have to ask you for ID are rarely well paid and have to deal with actual rule breakers which is bad enough.

If someone is trying to do something that is illegal, they are jeopardizing the staff’s livelihood in the process which is just a really cruel thing to do. It’s one thing to commit a crime or break a rule and be the only one to face consequences. It’s quite another to do it in a way that could cost someone else their job and get them fined.

so I really don’t see why it’s so hard to just make their day easier and hand over an ID without complaining.

BingoBangow · 04/08/2024 00:18

first world problems

Yekko · 04/08/2024 00:18

No. I show them my ID. And that's it

Mairzydotes · 04/08/2024 08:30

It's not the asking, per se, it's if the cashier gives their opinion as well.

Maybe it does bother me little bit, but it's one of those things.

I haven't been asked for years, but was often asked in the Co-op during my 20s and 30s.

Pinkmoose · 04/08/2024 08:39

I haven’t been asked for ID ever except the US 🙈where pretty much everyone does.I think it’s because I’m tall 😂 That’s what I tell myself anyway because my sister in law is 5’2 and she gets ID’d all the time. She dresses trendier as well 😀

Edingril · 04/08/2024 08:53

No because they have a job to do and I don't think they do it for fun

Koko83 · 04/08/2024 08:56

No it makes me feel great and forget I am getting old 😂

Sweetteaplease · 04/08/2024 08:59

You'll be sad when it no longer happens. I look young for my age and am always IDed, until I turned 41 and it's never happened again 😪

Lorrymum · 04/08/2024 08:59

On holiday in Orlando my DH was refused beer because he didn't have ID. He is 70!

CatrionaBalfour · 04/08/2024 10:59

I like the idea of a 60 year old looking younger than her 30 something children 😂!

NewName24 · 04/08/2024 19:14

No because they have a job to do and I don't think they do it for fun

I think the point is, the y have a responsibility to make sure an age restricted product isn't sold to someone under 18 / U16.
It is the lack of common sense being applied that is frustrating. I get the reason they moved from "Do they look U18?" to "Check 21" to "You may be asked if lucky enough to look U25" but it is the asking people who are clearly into their 30s, 40s or more that is ridiculous.

If you live in a country where everyone carries ID, then presumably it isn't an issue to show it, but here in the UK, we don't need to, and many people don't.
Once I got past about 22, I never needed ID. So I've never carried it routinely (and only carried it if I was specifically going out to a club or to drink alcohol, before that).
