Does getting ID’d annoy you

Got ID’d for a scratch card earlier and I didn’t have any ID on me so they wouldn’t serve me. I’m 30. Yet I am able to go on a night out and not get ID’d all night for alcohol

I get unreasonably annoyed when I get ID’d. Especially when I have my 2 kids with me - I’m nearly 30 and I don’t often carry ID with me. I’m sure I’ll miss it - I should take it as a compliment but I can’t help but get annoyed.

SausageinaBun · 03/08/2024 14:06

I got asked if I was over 65 at Kew Gardens last week. The woman said she had to ask in case I could get a cheaper ticket. I'm 45 and had my school age children with me. She didn't ask if DD1 was a child, which is unusual, she's been asked since 12 because she looks about 17. She did seem a bit odd and rambled on about stuff. I smiled and was polite, but I'd normally consider that a bit rude.

TonyeKnausgaard · 03/08/2024 14:08

It used to, but I'm 40 now. I'm now delighted when someone asks.

Not so delighted when someone asks me if I can take my sunglasses off and they then immediately proceed with the sale!

AppleKatie · 03/08/2024 14:09

I suspect there’s a lot of grandparents taking kids into Kew but I’m sure she didn’t look at your face before asking!

I haven’t been ID’d since I got married in my mid 20s. It was bizarre. Like a switch, pre wedding routinely ID’d post wedding never (even when not wearing the ring). Getting married clearly aged me overnight 😂

BobnLen · 03/08/2024 14:13

I'm sad to say, I have never been iD'd when going out or in a shop or pub in my whole life, when I was young you just said you was 18 or gave a random birthdate. I'm 66 now so I guess it's too late. When I was in my 40s I went out with work colleagues who'd were 25-30, they were all iD'd and I was told, we don't need to see yours.

historyofbritishdesign · 03/08/2024 14:13

God no! I'm 37 and up until about two or three years ago I would get regularly IDd and I took it as a real compliment. When it happens now (rare) I laugh and think it's great because while I know I might look a little bit younger than 37, I definitely do not look 25.

RampantIvy · 03/08/2024 14:13

Didimum · 03/08/2024 14:01

😮 So everyone has a new form of the complimentary IDing to come in later life!

On the other hand, it's crushing when you show your ticket on the train and offer to show your senior railcard to be told "no, it's OK" Grin

Natsku · 03/08/2024 14:16

I'm 37 so I quite like it when I get asked for ID! I always have some form of ID on me though so its not an issue.
Once though, I got asked for ID, showed my UK provisional drivers license which was all I used for proof of age ID back then and the date of birth is in a different place than on local drivers licenses so the shop worker just stared at my ID for a bit, then said "Oh I can't read this" and just scanned my beer through Grin

MaltipooMama · 03/08/2024 14:19

Oh god I love it! I'm 38 now and got ID'd yesterday buying bottles of Budweiser for my bbq! It doesn't happen as much anymore but when it does I feel a little flicker of happiness. Saying that I'd probably be a bit gutted if I'd left my ID at home...

DarkHollowTree · 03/08/2024 14:20

Personally find it hilarious!!
In the last 2 weeks I've been IDd in B&m, Tesco and best of all, a man knocked at the door and asked if my dad was in (looking for my partner! Who I have DC with)
I'm 30 🤣🤣 have had my DD10 with me every time.
I don't get IDd in pubs though oddly enough?

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 14:26

@DarkHollowTree You’ve just reminded me of sometime last year (so I was 29) someone knocked on trying to sell me a sky tv package and the guy asked me if my parents were in😂 I was like no this is my house I’m 29😂

Annoyed??? Bloody Hell it would be like all my birthdays and Christmases come at once! But I'm 45 😁

Whatwouldscullydo · 03/08/2024 14:27

I'd love to get I'D!

Staff are under alot of pressure now. Many Many years ago when I worked in pubs we just had to ask if we thought someone one looked under 18.

Fast forward to now where everyone has a think 21or 25 policy, staff get tested on a regular basis and despite doing nothing wrong by serving a 20 yr old or a 24 yr old both of whom would previously have never been challenged , staff could actually be fired fir NOT asking. Top that with a lack.of ID'ing being seen, not as having gotten to know your customers, but as potentially evidence that you aren't doing your job , it has lead to a massive increase in who gets iD'd. But ultimately alcohol can kill young people, gambling is extremely addictive , energy drinks are absolutely awful for you and probably dangerous in large quantities, surely pissing a 30 year old off every now and then is preferable to young vulnerable people being able to do harmful things all too easily. Protecting children and vulnerable people is the aim of the whole thing after all. Just carry your ID. It's not a ball and chain around your ankle that weighs 3 tonnes. Its a small.plastic card. Shove it in your wallet with your club card and dentist appointment card..

Allmyfavouritepeople · 03/08/2024 14:31

It does annoy me because Ive been legally able to drink for half my life but can't drive for medical reasons so no easy form of ID. It's a pain to go home via public transport and back out again to get what I wanted.

Doesn't happen very often now though as I don't buy alcohol very often (and I finally look my age) last time I got ID'd it was in Hotel Chocolat!

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 14:33

@Allmyfavouritepeople Hotel chocolat! What for😲

It does annoy me inwardly but I never moan to staff about it. One time that really irritated me was when I was buying wine with my other half there (both mid thirties and look it). He got ID'd and didn't have it. I had mine but they wouldn't sell it to me 🤷‍♀️ I understand having doing your job but it's challenge 25, so if someone is clearly older then why the need to ID?

Well I suppose the complaint is that if they've ID'd you at 40 it probably means they haven't looked at your face properly.

I've never met a 40+ year old who I thought looked like they weren't old enough to buy alcohol. And if you've not got ID on you, you can't buy whatever you wanted to buy, which is annoying.

It used to happen all the time. I still don’t have wrinkles. I suppose some people associate getting older with wrinkles maybe that’s what the shop assistants are looking for I can’t really say.

Tiggersjo8 · 03/08/2024 14:44

@NovelOnAPostcard Take it you’ve never been ID and you’re mad😬

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 03/08/2024 14:44

Nahh though did get ID for ibuprofen gel which didn't realise was a thing. Thought meds was under 16s but guess it's still think 25? Cause at 34 I don't look 16

summerdazey · 03/08/2024 14:45

Didimum · 03/08/2024 13:57

No need to get sweary, love. You can be annoyed about it happening and not blame the shop staff.

Don't call me "love"

I hear you Grin

A few months ago the checkout operator paused before hitting the Over 25 button and I wanted to hug her.

Not sure but if you are 40 and they look at your face properly then you really won't look under 25. I think the annoyance is that people look too quickly/ don't properly look.

I've had it before where people have been really embarrassed after asking me because they realise they didn't look properly, I'm obviously over 25, but by then it's too late and they can't sell me the thing and I don't have ID, so it's annoying all round.

SilverCatStripes · 03/08/2024 14:50

I am 43 and I got asked for ID buying booze in a supermarket last month - I am still crowing about it, and will continue to do so !

For further bragging rights I would also like to add I had zero make up on!

Tagyoureit · 03/08/2024 14:50

It's more upsetting when they stop!

Like the first time a waiter calls you madame rather than mademoiselle, that stung! 😭
