to say women don't have XY chromosomes?

1000 replies

taylorswift1989 · 03/08/2024 11:55

Seeing a lot of posts on social media with people admitting they were "wrong" to call Imane Khelif a man, and that they now understand "she's a woman with XY chromosomes."

Am I going insane? A person with XY chromosomes is male! (Regardless of how they identify, of course.) Why are people saying stuff that is obviously nonsensical? Are people really that ignorant of basic biological facts?

At least he's an Arsenal supporter I suppose

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2024 17:57

Actually, yes one would. If it were me, I'd just publish the result and stop all the discussion.

They can't do this. But you know who could? The two boxers.

They could, but I Guess it's just easier to cheat, keep fightng and steal medals from women though.

OvaHere · 03/08/2024 17:59

Tandora · 03/08/2024 17:50

I do not see them as “men” who “cheat” their way into female sports, and I have every confidence that the top female athletes are up to the challenge of competing with them and often beating them, as they proved they can and have done.

And although the women, and trans women, and cis women with diverse sex development, who participate at Olympic level in female sports, might not be able to beat the top cis , endosex, male athletes , I do not see them in any way as being the equivalent of “shit” or “mediocre” men.

When more and more of these men cheat their way in often will turn to sometimes, then sometimes to never. There will be a tipping point where women never win.

Frankly a lot of very excellent women who are top female athletes have already been cheated out of places, medals and money but you just don't seem to care about them.

It sounds like you would be happy for only one or two women to be left in female sport worldwide as long as you can point to them as the best and equal to men.

Fuck the thousands of other women and girls though left out in the cold because female sport is no longer for them.

Very feminist.

This sort of misinformation is dangerous.

Algeria does not kill people for being LGBT or for having a DSD.

It’s obviously not a great place to be LGBT and there are no laws preventing discrimination. A study commissioned by UK Gov in 2020 noted that their Penal code laws on public decency could lead to 3 years imprisonment or a fine. Thankfully prosecutions are rare. People don’t tend to be open about it due to shame.

Absolutely @Runningupthecurtains - my 12 year old DS who is a good couple of inches shorter than me is much much stronger. It's actually quite staggering just how much stronger he is.

I felt the same - I was really quite suprised and he’s only just starting puberty (luckily he won’t read this as he’d not be pleased!!).

FOJN · 03/08/2024 18:01

Tandora · 03/08/2024 17:33

But none of this suggests that top female althletes have the equivalent performance of “shit” and “ mediocre” men. Which is what I was objecting to. This use of language is not only wrong but degrading to women’s sports. There’s nothing mediocre about the men competing in the swimming olympics.

You seem to think that unless women can beat men in elite sport then they are rubbish. We're saying women excelling when competing against other women are excelling.

The US women's football team, who have won the world championship twice, were beaten by a team of under 15 boys. Those boys would get nowhere near the standard of elite male competition.

Of course you know this and now you are trying to back pedal because you questioned the point of female champions if they can't beat men.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2024 18:01

The IBA have not actually stated an XY chromosome was tested for or found (at least in anything I've seen), only that an "unspecified eligibility criteria" was not met.

They have stated that they failed the 2 boxers' "gender" (sic) tests based on something other than testosterone, and their "gender" eligibility criteria are available online.

The world boxing association have also said Khelif is male.

The IOC this morning had to issue a correction that in a press conference they said it wasn't a "DSD case" when what they apparently meant was it wasn't a "transgender case". Implying that it clearly is a "DSD case."

But trans women do participate in sports. They have participated , and women’s sports have survived. Most top female athletes are cis and endosex.

But trans women do participate in sports.

As long as they're in their correct sex class, there's no reason why they shouldn't.

women’s sports have survived

You think women can have penises, so this sentence has no worthwhile meaning. You don't see anything wrong with three male people taking all the medals at an Olympics race in 2016 because your Newspeak changes the meaning of "woman" to justify it.

Barbie222 · 03/08/2024 18:01

That's not what I asked,@Tandora .

Do you support anyone, regardless of physicality or genotype, entering the women's competitions? Because if all you need is a female passport, that's what you have.

If you do, what would be your message to natal female athletes about why they can no longer win medals?

Using pictures like this is unhelpful IMO. Women can ‘dress like men’. Women can have short hair. Female people don’t have XY chromosomes, which is the problem with these athletes.

OK. I think that people who are born with vaginas are women, but respect your right to think otherwise.

So you would classify an XY person with a short blind ended vagina and no uterus as female even if they also have functioning testes?

Barbie222 · 03/08/2024 18:03

The physique is me - you can’t hide that with clothes/ hair.

Tiredmumtoboy · 03/08/2024 18:04

One thing I do think is, if your raised a girl/woman your whole life. Then suddenly a test says your a man.

I wouldn't be going right must go back into training for the Olympics.

I'd be going to doctors and what not asking what on earth is going on and trying to prove tests wrong ect.

It's odd.

rtsmith · 03/08/2024 18:04

Just think of 1984. What you are told you must believe. And no one wants to stand up for logic or reason anymore in case they are taken away and re-educated.

Does anyone know if he actually has a vagina? The lovely tube that connects the external vulva and womb? Let’s use the correct terms … a vagina cannot be seen without internal exam. Vulva is the outside vagina stuff.

Or, does he have a not a typical penis, and external tissue that looks like a vulva but is actually was a not fully formed testicular sac? Maybe a “void” that could be mistaken for an actual vagina?

We know he has testes because his body makes testosterone.

Nobody actually knows anything, it's all guessing and speculation. Some of it is educated guessing but as far as I can tell nobody has an official diagnosis.
I believe women also produce testosterone and women with polycystic ovaries actually have higher levels due to the condition but are not banned from the Olympics.

Women with PCOS don't have testosterone levels in the male range

Ereshkigalangcleg · 03/08/2024 18:08

@wadeinthewater

Reposting @Helleofabore's post from another thread. Women with PCOS aren't a good comparison here.

"For any reader who believes that any female person can have testosterone in the 'male range' please look at the charts in the linked tweet.

Plus

This is from a PCOS advocate on twitter.

PCOS raises female testosterone to up to 5.5 nmol/L (and above 4 can cause serious issues).
5-ARD raised Caster's testosterone to 21 nmol/L.

Sean Ingle (Guardian sports journalist) mentioned this

The latest scientific publications clearly demonstrate that the return of markers of endurance capacity to "female level" occurs within six to eight months under low blood testosterone, while the awaited adaptations in muscle mass and muscle strength/power take much longer (two years minimum according to a recent study). Given the important role played by muscle strength and power in cycling performance, the UCI has decided to increase the transition period on low testosterone from 12 to 24 months. In addition, the UCI has decided to lower the maximum permitted plasma testosterone level (currently 5 mol/L) to 2.5 mol/L. This value corresponds to the maximum testosterone level found in 99.99% of the female population.

onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/sms.14581

The International Olympic Committee framework on fairness, inclusion and nondiscrimination on the basis of gender identity and sex variations does not protect fairness for female athletes

“In adulthood, circulating testosterone concentrations do not come close to overlapping between females (0.1–1.7 nmol/L) and males (7.7–29.4 nmol/L).”

plus with handy charts in the tweet

x.com/hoovlet/status/1819017510005407984

“Confirmed. No overlap in T levels between healthy men and women, and rarely in people with atypical levels”.

“Below I'll include some info from my book on T and sex diffs. First is an illustration of the combined data from a meta-analysis of studies on a healthy population (by David Handelsman), and another on T levels in ppl with medical conditions/DSDs (by Richard Clark). I've also included my text description of the data. The original illustration is from Doriane Coleman's excellent Sex in Sport article (link is in the graphic). She let me adapt it for my book but hers is clearer!”

If you are using the term 'woman with high testosterone', plus check your sources and don't spread misinformation. Female people with PCOS, women, DO NOT HAVE male levels of testosterone!"

Boom, there it is.
No sex testing in sport because men who identify as women should be accepted into the female category.
