Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

Rioting in the UK has not been solely caused by Farages comments. It is so much more complex than that. The government isn’t addressing the elephant in the room - which is their own failings of policies. Poverty is very gritty and grim. A lot of people are beginning to realise that despite working away day in day out like gerbils on a wheel- they are getting nowhere. You can’t buy a house, rents are unaffordable, the cost of living crisis, the years long NHS waiting lists. Writing to your MP goes nowhere. Violence is always wrong and never the answer but I think large sections of people are suffering with austerity and desperation. I don’t doubt that there is right wing racism at play which is definitely wrong - but the government urgently needs to address the wider contributing issues.

I agree with @BustingBaoBun

This government is just over a month old. They don’t have failed policies yet. It is the failed Tory policies that must be dealt with

lovelysunshine22 · 07/08/2024 21:05

Yet the first thing our new prime minister did was dismiss everyone with concerns about immigration as " right wing thugs". That doesn't fill me with hope!

Everyone can form their own opinion on their own reality

Of course everyone can form their own opinion. But reality is objective. There isn’t one for you and a different one for me.

Changing definitions midstream to make the other guy look bad, as Trump is trying to do with Biden and ‘energy independence’ is an attempt to prevent voters from forming opinions based on reality.

SpuytenDuyvil · 07/08/2024 21:07

It is always easier to tear down, rather than build up. In the US, it has been a gargantuan effort for Biden et al. to try and repair the extensive and dramatic damage that Trump inflicted on us, and they have only been able to get so far. I understand that 14 years of Tory leadership has done so much damage. 14 years!

I’m saying that what the so called experts may spout is not people’s reality.

This government has only been in power for a month. If your theory is correct it’s mighty odd that there were no riots since 2011. I wonder why? 🤔

No he quite rightly called out rioters as right wing thugs. What else would you call them?

Whilst trying to put the shitters on social media sites. MN has fallen right into line.

Biden made her border Czar. She has given interviews about this. You can’t rewrite history because she did a crappy job

Please read or even Google who was in charge if border control, read the facts before speculation and assumptions are made , and its ridiculous and stupid calling of names, tongue and thumb cheek yes but deliberate humiliation is crass.

SpuytenDuyvil · 07/08/2024 22:19

@LookAtThatCritter Who would you have preferred?

I am in the nhs sector and I assure you its not about that , its about thugs and racists, so dont even try and justify farages comments .

Honestly - I don't know. It doesn't seem like we have any great candidates. I feel like the people who may actually do good for the country never make it far up enough the totem pole.

@Molly70 there was a good Border Control Bill supported by Republicans and Democrats in Congress as well as Biden and Harris, all set to pass. The only person who disliked it was Trump, because it would take away one of the big things he loved to blame on the Democrats (the immigration issue). He told the Republicans in Congress to turn against it, and they did.

This is a matter of public record

I don’t understand what people think they are accomplishing by this supposed pure meritocracy shtick and moaning “race and gender” shouldn’t matter.

Representation matters! Empathy matters! Shared goals and values matter! Experience matters!

Trump is running a revanchist white male grievance campaign. Those are his issues and lots of his voters want that.

WTAF are you talking about?

The bipartisan bill still allowed several thousand border crossings to happen before shutting down the border. Trump prefers a wait in Mexico policy and wants to reinstall that

Custard cream, the conservative party stripped the NHS and Social care of funding for 14yrs, Truss put the nail in the coffin with her stupid budget , conservative, s lined their own and freinds pockets while depriving the poorest for years.

It was a very reasonable solution forthe richest country in the world, and the point is the elected Republican officials supported it. Trump had, and has, no role in government. It was wrong of him to exert undue influence over elected officials, and cowardly of them to bow to him

If he has that sway then he can use it. They can all put themselves forward in the primaries if they want to do things differently

We don’t have a border czar. Its a manner of speaking. She did engage in bilateral talks with a number of counterparty countries but the actual legislation which would have affected birder security was done by bipartisan groups in the house and senate under President Biden’s leadership. The border bill which they agreed to which would have addressed the concerns you claim to have (as it was bipartisan and dealt with many right wing concerns) was publicly tanked by Trump who ordered his minions in the legislature to vote against the bill they themselves had crafted which they shamelessly did.

Still curious why you are okay with Trump shifting the goalposts on the definition of energy independence, @Molly70

The bottom line is that gas was cheaper under Trump than Biden.
